I must be very lucky, never tried for a headshot but always get a perfect snake skin.

maybe your hitting their head anyway?   I'll have to try it and see tonight.  I still need 1 perfect skin for the camp upgrade.  Pretty positive though that shooting them in the body lowered the pelt.

Do you have the trinket that raises their star rating?  maybe that's it.

  2. or maybe it should be arrow patterns, or arrow schematics?  anyway, i'm stuck on the survivalist challenge

    Spoiler

Craft 1 of each arrow - fire, improved, poison, dynamite, and small game

of those 5 i've got the first, second and last, but where do i find the patterns/whatever for the other 2?  So far they're not available in any shop i have access to.  Maybe farther along in the game?  i just started chapter 3.

I'm going to follow that way of thinking, trying to grind from 0 to 10 of the same challenge makes me want murder whoever thaught about some of the challenges... that "Hunter Master 6" or whatever the cougar one number is, was a pain in the ass to do all in one go. 3 hours running around the same spot hoping for cougars to show up.

That's the one i'm stuck on.  I go NW of Strawberry near the trapper, hunt there till i get one, then go do other things.  few game days later i'll do it again.  I've gotten 3 so far lol.

This day, November, 16, 2018 I am establishing Marston's Law, which states: Items that seem ridiculously overabundant and plentiful shall always become sparse, infrequent, even rare once you begin searching for them specifically and in earnest.

At the beginning of the game I saw so many Pronghorn Sheep that they seemed like vermin. The first thing I dragged into camp was a Pronghorn Buck, and I was a little ashamed. I thought to myself that the game was a bit "pronghorny." Now that I'm trying to find one to tick off my camp improvements, I can't find one for love or money. They've evaporated. I see what seems to be a juicy, perfect pronghorn or 5 on the horizon, get out my binocs, and sure enough they are mangy White Tail's, of which I need none. Where were they when I needed them?

An so it goes with rabbits, squirrels, boars etc. To the point where I'm wondering if they coded it into the game just to laugh at my sorry ass.

I just shake my head and say... it's Marston's Law.

Give me a shout if this has happened to you, just to know I'm not crazy.

    Legendary%20Pronghorn.jpg

i think it's just coincidence.  But yeah it seems like they thin out when you need to hunt them.

    Spoiler

Coming out of Annesburg last night i ran across a ton of pronghorn between Elysian Pool and Hearland overflow.

They seem to like to run with the deer, makes them sometimes hard to spot.  I had 3 or 4 perfect hides and a couple perfect buck hides from them, till i died running into a mob of lawmen.  Never eat dinner and ride your horse at the same time when you have a high bounty lol

Except for snakes, my tip would be: use a small game arrow, follow it until it prepares to attack and shoot it in the head. It's the easiest way to guarantee a perfet skin, I got a body hit on a snake and it still went on and about, the second shot killed it but lowered it to a 1 star rating. <- Maybe I'm just unlucky tho.

Nope, same thing happened to me.  Headshot is the only way to get a perfect snake skin.

Well that sucks. I just got it then immediately took a break to watch more Stoopidnatural. And trinkets are automatic I think, only seen talismans equippable from the wardrobe.

you know what.  I restored my game last night, and probably hadn't had the trinket remade again.  Just realized that.  I'll check tonight and verify.

  7. since I restored my game i have to redo these.  Last night i found that

    Spoiler

To rob the 4 stores you can do it all in Valentine.  I robbed the General store first, then as i was running out the back of the store to get away, a lawman got a lucky headshot in and killed me.  When i came back to life, only 30 minutes or so had passed in game time, and the general store was not locked down from being robbed.  So i hit it again, then did @Bonzai's strategy of running away and coming back for the remaining stores.

Still working on the sharpshooter one.  I can get 2 but haven't gotten 3 yet.

As mentioned above, hunt the legendary buck; get a trinket made. Adds a star to all pelts. The purist way would be to study animals through binoculars. Once known, the tips will mention what weapon yields the best results. I've done the second part, doing the first is on today's agenda. ;)

that works for good or better pelts.  I have the trinket, and most of the deer i'm finding now even with it are poor.  All i need are 2 perfect deer pelts, and all i see are poor, poor, and more poor.

Maybe i need to equip the trinket?  I thought you just had to have it made for the bonus.

I heard that the SD horse cheese can lead to your legendary being randomly replaced by a knackered nag. Seems that's what happened to you. :P

That's what you get for exploiting, you exploiter. I could never get that place to work. Every time it's Walkers and Morgans. :(

exploiting what?  i'm lost there on what i exploited.

I did get my legendary back though :D  had to restore my game from the 11th.  Which was no big deal, i haven't progressed past the opening of chapter 3 yet in the story line, so i lost nothing there,  now i just have to do the fun of the challenges again and hunt down 3 or 4 perfect hides.  kinda funny, i felt like i had really done a lot in those 4 days, but then i restore back and hadn't really done much but 6 sharpshooter and 3 bandit challenges and spend money on paying off my bounties lol.

I'm not saying that it doesn't work as a cover -- I'm saying that it doesn't get used from my inventory at all. Scent lines stay too. It's as if I can't get the lid off the damn jar! :(

Right, so try inching to the side.  This has happened to me numerous times and that's been my fix.  :)

Huh. I could have sworn I tried to push that plunger, and concluded that it just didn't do anything. Maybe I just didn't try hard enough!

you have to do it after, can't do it during the mission.

I don't recall the lantern showing in the satchel, but then i've never really looked for it.  Maybe in the Kit satchel with the campfire and stuff?

  12. it does work actually but doesn't completely mask your scent that i've seen, and only for a short time.  Go into tracking mode and you can see the scent lines from Arthur are greatly reduced with the cover scent.

And just like the bait you have to be in the perfect spot to use it.  With the bait when i use it and nothing happens, if you watch Arthur will look at where he wants to place it.  Inch that way or turn that way and then it works.  Cover scent is the same, but you don't get the visual clue.  If it doesn't work turn to the left or right and/or inch to one side or the other and try again.

  13. Lantern Alternative -

    Spoiler

There's a bounty hunter mission, think it's the one from Strawberry, you go up into an old mine north of Lake Owanjila.  After you do the bounty and take the guy to jail, return there and use the dynamite plunger on the left side of the mine entrance.  that will blow up the back wall of the mine and there's a miner's hat in there you can use.  I like it better than the lantern.

  14. you keep the last 4 hats in your horse satchel, maybe it's 5 hats.  something like that.

Anytime i've gone into the red area around Blackwater i always get those dozen lawmen and 3 dogs, they spawn right beside you and you have no chance to run away.  I'm guessing the $10 fine i also received is for trespassing?   only thing i can think of, there's nothing in the crimes list that makes sense for it.

Hogtie is undervalued as a strategy.  I hogtie people all the time when I want to rob their houses.  I can just leave them there and nothing bad happens as long as I had a mask on when I walked in.

you're right.  i typically only use it on the bounty hunter missions.

Surprisingly, I lucked into finishing this challenge by accident.

As you progress through the game, you'll encounter several other factions or gangs, including

      Reveal hidden contents

    The Lemoyne Riders

I was heading into Saint Denis the other day along the train tracks when I saw that this particular gang

      Hide contents

Had stopped a train and killed everyone on board so they could rob it.  Naturally, I eliminated the threat by shooting most of them in the face, and then hog-tying the last few to the train tracks.  At that point, I could safely loot the train, take control, and run over their bodies as I built up speed going either forwards or backwards picking off birds.

i saw those too right after i started chapter 3 the first time (had to restore my game to a save on the 11th to get my legendary horse back)  Haven't seen them yet, but then i just started chapter 3 again last night and havent' done anything in it yet but hunt for perfect skins to get the couple satchels back i lost and work toward the legend satchel.  I have to do the sharpshooter challenges again, so i'm sure i'll run into these guys at some point.

great idea with the hog tie, i'll have to remember that and use it :)

How to get the best animal pelts?

    hello
The animal pelts have a star rating of 1 2 or 3, every single animal I kill is either 1 or 2 stars... how do you get 3 stars?

the more bullets you put in them the lower the rating?

    Thank you

Study the animal,  then press RB/R1 to see the details.  It will tell you which weapons is best for the animal. Some have 2 weapons you can use to get perfect hides.

Headshots are the best way, or when your dead eye is leveled up you can see their vitals.

I just do head shots, to easy for me to miss a viral and ruin the perfect hide I been hunting.

It's not a button or combo you press, it's an option you toggle in the game's settings menus when you pause. I'm not back home for about another hour so I don't remember exactly which settings it's under, but I'll edit this post after I get home and double check.

ah good to know.  i'll check there in an hour when i get home from work.  Going to check my settings anyway after clearing the cache and reloading my game back a few days to get my horse back.

  19. awesome post!  great info here from all.  thanks guys!

from my experience, for the walk, trot, etc. I push forward to walk, tap A/X and then hold it down to keep that pace.  so from walk to trot it's 2 presses holding the 2nd down to keep that speed.  repeat for the next speed, up to full out sprint where tap with the sound of the hoof beats to keep from losing stamina (and usually fail more than i get it timed right)  :)

I don't recall having to press RB/R1 twice to back up the horse, i just pressed and held like when backing up a wagon i think.

I forget if it's in the controls menu or camera menu, but theres an option that let's you choose between controlling the horse from your camera's POV and controlling from the horses POV.

That's cool, didn't know you can do that.  i was thinking it would be the select button changes camera views on the horse,  must be a button combo to go to horse's POV?  i've cycled through all the camera views while on the horse with select and that's not one of them.

    Fact^

Though My Horse isn't all that bright, he still runs head first into trees sometimes... Must be a side effect from having his head spontaneously combust that one time...

My stupid lame first horse does that all the time.  I found that with it when riding through trees not to control her at all, just keep the speed going by holding the A/X button and let her get through the trees then take control after lol.  I pick myself off the ground much less that way.

With the Legendary i had i didn't have much trouble hitting trees.  But maybe that's because i don't control them as much in the woods and around rocks as i do in clear areas after learning from the dumb first horse.   I treat them kinda like a real horse, point them where i want to go and correct it as needed if they stray off to far.

Maybe this will people help to dont think the law system is broken just because they ride like rambo through the town and wondering why everybody is shooting at them.

I've never had a problem running through town at a sprint.  unless you hit someone, you'll get a murder charge, or get to close and they panic and dodge, then you'll get assault charge.  They don't charge you with a crime for just sprinting through town, even if you forgot to wear your bandanna/mask and have a $500 bounty.

After spending severel hours collecting several of the collectable melee weapons in the big world of RDR2. After collecting the double ended hatchet, the wood hatchet, the Viking axe and helmet and the hunters knife as well as several of the collectable hats. On the way back to camp I was ambushed and died when I came back to and got on my horse and I have nothing or close to it, I went back to the locations I died and found nothing and then I went to each one of the unique items locations and also found nothing. Wondering if this happened to others or just me.

They should be in your inventory,  go to the weapon wheel (RB/R1) and check the throwables (lower left, the lasso i think is default there) the hatchets should be there.  Hunter knife will be in the lower right (LT/L1 or RT/R2 to cycle through the items)  Hats will be in your horse inventory lower right, but you can only store 4 or 5 in there.  The others may be in your wardrobe inventory at camp/hotel.

  21. I put in a ticket about losing the DLC warhorse with R* and about the glitch that took away my Legendary Arabian.

    Here's their response -

    Quote

Thank you for contacting Rockstar support.

I understand your concern that your warhorse got replaced  in RDR2.

I am glad you have contacted me and I am going to offer you all necessary information needed to resolve this.

However I would like to inform you that the “War Horse” is DLC content, if you have pre-ordered the Red Dead Redemption 2, then, unlike other horses that experience permanent death if left untreated, the War Horse can be "purchased" again from the stables for 0$.

I would request you to first complete the clear cache steps then go look back at the stables in Valentine. You will be able to retrieve your horse back from there.

In an attempt to resolve these issues, I would like to try resetting the local user profile settings for the game.

You do not have to worry about losing any progress, as this simply clears some temporary files associated with the game.

I have the steps to clear the cache below.
    1.    Fully shut down your console.
    2.    After 30 seconds of the console being shut down, restart the console.
    3.    Launch RDR2.
    4.    When launching RDR2, wait until a black screen appears after the initial splash art has disappeared, and hold down L1+R1 throughout the opening scenes.
    5.    If successful, you will be prompted to re-calibrate your language and brightness options.

If the above article does not resolve the issue you are encountering, please let us know.

Further I would require you to verify whether you have installed day 1 patch of RDR2.

You can see the build number as follows:
    - open the “Pause” menu
    - go to “Settings”
    - Bottom right hand side should show a numeric code like this “Build XXXX.X”

Kindly sent me this build number to verify it.

Happy gaming and enjoy Red Dead Redemption 2!

If you have any other concern feel free to contact us back.

Not much help really but that is a cool tip i didn't know to clear game cache.  Nothing about my missing Arabian though.  But i did find my war horse for sale at lunch today after doing this.

Then I emailed back about the glitch-lost Arabian.

    Quote

Thank you for getting back to us.

I follow that you lost your Legendary Arabian horse in RDR2.

I am going to help you right away.

I would suggest few points regarding the missing White Arabian.

    1. Please check the horse in the camp, you might find it.

Nope, i've already studied all the horses in camp, and tried to steal Micah's horse.  Unfortunately you can't.

    Quote

    2. Make sure that horse is not killed.

Well, i'm not sure about that because I died on Main St. as i call it in Valentine (where the stores are), and my Legendary was left back in the auction area.  Hopefully they didn't go kill my horse after they killed me.

    Quote

    3. Make sure you are looking into the same stable were horse was saved.

ummm say what?  you have to save your horse in the stable?  Yeah so i never saved my Legendary.  Insert forehead smack smiley here.  Now I feel like an idiot lol.  They haven't answer my question if the Legendary did die will it respawn so i can go tame it again.  Or if i can go tame it again from the glitch and me not knowing i could, or had to, save it in the stable.

This is what i got instead -

    Quote

Thank you for replying back to us.

I understand that you are worried about losing your Arabian horse.

I  request you to try loading the previous saved data where you had your Arabian horse.

Further try to to develop the bonding between the character and horse by feeding, patting and scrubbing the horse.

Hope the above information helps you in recovering your Arabian white horse.

So looks like i have to reset my game back a few days to a previous save point.  No big deal, i'm not that far along anyway, i've had my fun in the world hunting and building up my vilian rep, and the challenges.  OMG! the challenges!  Is the Legendary horse worth that?  hell yeah  not to mention i had hella fun doing the challenges.

Lesson learned - save your horses in the stables, they will (supposedly) return there if lost/stolen/killed and hopefully glitch-lost.

  22. you can kill with the knife.  I've done it many times.  Aim first then stab.  I shot 4 small game arrows at a crab, missed every one, ran up on it and stabbed it a few times to make me feel better.   before i realized the weapon to use was in the animal info i kept trying to stab snakes to get the perfect hides :)  don't recommend it, unless you've stocked up on lots of healing tonics or ginseng plants, and it doesn't work anyway.  it damages the hide so they're just good or poor.

You also use the knife for the killing blow when lassoing animals

  23. i miss eating rabbit :(  all the ones around here have been parasitic for the last few years.  My uncle used to raise them when i was younger.  my brothers and I would take turns harvesting one or 2 for dinner each time we went there.  I can't even image now what people would think of us stringing a rabbit up by it's hind feet and swinging a baseball at it's head.  30+ years ago when we were kids that's how it was done.  now that would probably mean jail time and i'll grow up to be a serial killer.

there's almost no fat on rabbit,  in survival situations it's bad to just eat rabbit, you can die of lean starvation i think they call it, body needs fat to survive.

Back on topic :)  i'll have to check out the skinned vs non skinned carcasses tonight while i'm hunting for the satchels.  Not sure if the price difference is worth only being able to carry 1 and run back to the butcher every time.   Actually no, it's not, i'm not needing cash that badly.
