When I first started rdrO  I did exactly what Cory is suggesting, giving people the benefit of the doubt , just riding into town and trying to sell. And without fail, half the time I'd get shot as I approached or lasso'd or whatever nonsense the small mind came up with. Until they add private lobbies (which, they will) we all have to assume anyone that idles near hot spots in the game is doing so for the purpose of killing you. Now, if someone is walking near me or riding through town with no weapons drawn, I'm good, I'll take that risk.  But besides that, I have to assume you're up to no go. A smart griefer always tries to blend in so you're not expecting it.

yup, and a little observation on the big map can tell you a lot about the likely intention of other players.

Exactly right Kean. People that play like this are the easy marks that breed and encourage griefers. If you feel the need to stand around, at least do it in a store.

....store, saloon or my favorite, the post office if I'm in town since you're protected.  If I'm not out alone in the wild or in camp, that's where I do my inventory assessments, catalogue browsing, etc.

I'm not going to bust someone's balls for taking a precaution by shooting a camper at a known griefing spot.

I wasn't telling you what you do, I was telling you what I do. It's fine. Just remember you shoot people who are no threat to you too.

.....and I was merely saying what I do as a common courtesy to fellow non-griefers who want to get to the butcher to see their goods and to avoid being shot myself.

IMO, if you're just loitering around the butcher trying to figure out your crap for 10 minutes, you're asking to be a target but then again, I'm also considering my fellow non-griefers too who may feel nervous that it's an ambush.

What if you don't celebrate? I guess we can go with Happy Tuesday? I know some people in my family celebrate the Winter Solstice on the... oh wait, that is today. HAPPY WINTER EVERYONE!

Then don't worry about it if the thread doesn't speak to you.  ....easy peasy.

The OP already made the discussion as PC as he could as most companies at least give the day(s) off to their employees as "holidays".

madfretter, you're the problem. We're not all like that, some of us stand around for 10 minutes because we've forgotten what we're doing, or we're watching the feckin sun set! then some mad fretter comes up and shoots us in the head...

    You're the problem.

.....why would you even be standing right next to a butcher to do that?

If I'm going to be idle, I get out of the area, go to a post office, etc. for my own safety and the courtesy of others by showing I'm not a threat.

Tbh, is there really much of a difference between grinding series matches, hunting and fishing, doing missions?  It seems to me that any minor advantages one has over another is outweighed by boredom.  Seems better, to me, to vary what I do - some matches, some hunting, some fishing etc.

That's what I do. I vary activities. I tend to keep hunting for when I play solo but I also do that too with groups to change it up in our session

Dredd1961 regards to reading the map I do watch the movements but figured I'm not the only one stopping at butcher. and you are right I may not be playing it for long unless I hook up with a posse or my two gamer buddies by the game. I confess that could be culture shock as I am 65 years old... Merry Christmas

What platform are you in (can't see all profile details on phone)?  I'm over the half century mark myself and play with another friend my name age and typically others who are in their 30s-40s.

If you're on PS4 and need some companionship, let me know. I am on the West coast of the US though (not sure where you are at) and I typically play evenings.

btw, when playing solo, you really need to keep a close eye on other players. I try not to even get close enough to others where they will appear on my minimap. I will typically go to other butchers if I see randoms in a town. I will work on something else if I see players near an objective (e.g. treasure map, etc.).

Of course, when you're with someone, it's easier and safer to take some risk.

The point is however, no card should allow you to take more than 1 headshot

.....on the other hand, we are talking about a game with an auto aim system so strong that it allows players to make incredible head shots with relative ease.  ....with a .22 varmint rifle no less at a distance.

No thanks, I'll take the advantage the ability cards provide. If they had a session that eliminated auto aim, I'd say yeah, a more lethal damage model would be great.

Man there are a lot of misconceptions about real firearms here.

The AR in AR15 is for Armalite, the company that Stoner worked for. AN automatic rifle has its selector switch AUTO-SEMI-SAFE.

NO American firearm has EVER been made this way. In fact the ONLY major firearm made this way was the AK47 which they quit making in 1961.

The variants since all have different designations.

Now back to the old timey firearms. The Colt SSA came in one caliber 45Colt. The 44-40 WIn was a proprietary caliber used only in Winchester firearms.

The 1873 was made in 45/70 first, then in pistol caliber (44-40) later. 38 Special is past the time period, and 357 mag was invented in 1936 by Elmer Keith.

I have all his books. I reload his round, its still one of the best 38/357 rounds made.

All pistol caliber carbines prior to 1895 were made with rimfire cases and black powder.

I have shot all of the copies of all these handguns in my life time. You go watch fast draw or 3 gun cowboy and you will see nothing but Colt SSA copies.

The tip opens were faster to reload, but nothing is faster to fan fire than a Colt SSA. I even had a 1969 Ruger Blackhawk, it was darn fast, but the Colt SSA beat it every time.  This is not judgement, this is I did it actual shooting. I gave up fast draw do to age and arthritis.

What misconceptions?  The argument your making about the AR acronym was precisely the point that was brought up here.

......and then you're taking some of my remarks out of context. The reference to .357 / .38 cal. was regarding what I might have considered in a current production Winchester  73.

    Some other points.....

When Winchester introduced the 44-40 it wasn't soley used in Winchester arms. It was in fact adopted by other manufacturers who made variants chambered in this caliber which included S&W (as I had already mentioned when I referred to the Schofield), Remington, Marlin and yes, even Colt (e.g. the Colt Frontier).

Also, you're probably talking about the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor that used the 44-70 cartridge. I was talking about the Winchester Model 1873 that used the 44-40. See below for reference which also includes a bit about the original 66 design using the Henry rimfire cartridge like I said.

    https://www.gunsamerica.com/digest/shooting-history-winchester-1873-old-gun-review/

Also, the 44-40 used in the Winchester Model 1873 rifle (which was also a pistol caetridge) was in fact a centerfire cartridge (not rimfire).

I don't mean to sound harsh but I want to make it clear that there were no misconceptions here on our end in what you tried to point out as being such.

Just recalled a discussion from another thread. I guess it was @BropolloCreed79 that was getting his kid into it. Either way, I remember you two discussing gun safety and whatnot, that's why I asked.

Edit: and I have no "real" knowledge of gun safety

Ahhh....  Guess I read it the wrong way, sorry.

Yeah, Creed and I had that discussion about kids and when they're ready, etc.  Although mine isn't, there are still basic safety rules I teach him if he does encounter any guns.  .....stop, don't touch, leave the area immediately and tell an adult (preferably my wife or myself).

As shooters/owners, we abide the same simple rules 1) Treat every gun as if it is loaded  2) Never point a gun at anything you're not willing to destroy  3) Keep your finger off the trigger until you're on target and ready to fire  4) Know your target and what is beyond.

There are variations of the verbiage and even additional rules but those are typically the primary ones that you'll hear.  You obviously should know how a particular weapon operates before handling it (e.g. so you know how to clear it), know the correct ammunition type to use (it might fit and even be the right caliber but not what is recommended for the weapon),  use eye and ear protection, etc., etc.

It's funny, I've been complimented before in a gun shop when I cleared a weapon the clerk handed to me even though he just checked it himself 10 seconds prior with me watching.  I told him that I always treat every gun as loaded which means I'm going to check it myself regardless and then still treat it like it's loaded.  .....first rule.

With years of repetition I find these things to be second nature.  I'm also find myself to be very attuned to what others are doing around me when they are handling guns at a range, in a shop, etc.  Gun safety is the utmost importance and something I take very seriously.  .....as should everyone.

How does that not make sense to you?

You make sure your gun is safe before doing something else. @Kean_1 what would you do if your kid had a gun cocked and loaded and chose to start jumping fences with it?

Well, for one, my kid is too young at this point in his life to be handling guns but I wouldn't recommend anyone jumping fences, holstering or otherwise handling a weapon in a "ready to fire" state unless they are actually ready to shoot. That would go for several of the real life counterparts of the weapons repesented in this game that have no safety and are ready to shoot with just a pull of the trigger once (for example) the hammer is cocked back.  You would be asking for a negligent discharge to happen.

IMO, the "recocking" of most of these weapons makes sense to me.  Howvere, rechambering a round each time in the "bolt action rifle", not so much but then again, I'm not familiar with the Krag's (the real life rifle's) safety features, quirks, etc.

.....but beyond all this nonsense, it's just a game with a touch of historical accuracy, a dash a realism, some randomness and other features to make the game more immmersive. .....and I think they got it right for the most part to keep it still fun.

...btw, not too sure why you were asking me this question. I wasn't agreeing with the OP.

So about a week ago, I was gifted the 15 gold bars that you were supposed to get, but when I logged back on Red Dead Online earlier today, I was gifted another 15 gold bars. Is this supposed to happen?

Yes. There was an additional amount gifted to folks as a thank you from R* including some extra cash ($100 this time around IIRC).

  13. Well, to be honest, mingling with "randoms" in a session whether that means trying to join open posses, matchmaking for missions or simply trying to meet them in the open world is a sure way to increase your chances exponentially to be griefed.  .....that's for sure.

Personally, in the rare instances I do interact with randoms (even in a friendly encounter) I will break off contact if they can't be bothered to use a mic.  I'm not going to type out messages back and forth.

Instead of thinking about ways people can grief me, I simply do my best to avoid them and that seems to work 99% of the time.  Personally, I don't like griefers so I'm not going to do things that increase my chance of being exposed to them.

As far as meeting folks, I started a posse here and we now have about 36 members.  My PSN Community has 31 and is still growing.  It's funny that even with all of those people it can still be difficult to get folks to join up in a session (most seem shy) but I do at least get a chance to team up with at least one online friend a couple times a week or more.

If I'm playing solo, I won't deal with randoms but if I'm with a posse, I'm willing to take a few more risks.   .....and I've met some good folks because of it.  I guess I'd prefer not dwell on the bad aspects and would prefer to do what I can to make the best out of my online experiences.

btw, my friend got sniped last night by a player that we had been keeping a close eye on.  He seemed non threatening so we both let our guard down (bad move) and dallied too long in one spot.  After the shot was fired he somehow disappeared from the area but then reappeared across the other side of the map.  Instead of giving chase, we simply carried on with what we were doing.

We still don't know how he traveled to Saint Denis like that but we simply let it go and carried on with what we were doing.  We were interrupted for maybe 20 seconds and we were not going to let the brief encounter spoil our fun.

Well, I think I'm just showing my complete ignorance of all firearms.  As you say this is not a rifle sim, and I hadn't even considered all the things you mention, although it makes sense now you do. I've only ever fired an air rifle and a 4-10 shotgun when I was young.  As I said previously, us Limeys just never come into contact with guns, so its not something I know much about.  But thanks for taking time to explain, I appreciate it.

    Yeah, no worries.

btw, I think I mentioned it before but Ive shot my Dad's Winchester Model 94 (30-30) a few times in the past.

Kinda cool shooting weapons like this that while newly manufactured are eseentially unchanged from their original form.  Sort of a hands on peek back in history.

I miss those desert trips. I need to go out shooting more.

  16. btw, rcvd your msg Tye and accepted.  Also sent you an invite to the Community.

For some reason it won't come up on a search for some folks but it could just be a case of missing a space or similar.

  17. The OP was here saying the same thing over a month ago and yet, here he is still.

I played the hell out of the original RDR and to be perfectly honest, RDR2 felt like more of the same but simply improved.  .......improved in many ways whether it's the physics, the animations, graphics, additional content, size, mechanics, etc.  All of this contributes to the feeling of more depth in RDR2.

When I started playing this game, it felt like a natural continuation of RDR to me.  I have no idea what the OP is talking about.

I also like RDO but then again, I also realize it's a beta and is currently a shell of what it will be.

Folks like the OP don't want to hear constructive feedback or suggestions that may help his in-game experience.  .....believe me, we've already tried.  Folks like this will post their frustration disappear and then reappear a few day / weeks later to post the same thing.

I have nothing against folks that don't like certain games.  There are plenty I don't like myself.  ......but then again, I don't keep revisiting fan forums to complain about them because I usually just move on.  When there is nothing salvageable in a game like in the OPs case, it's probably time to cut your losses.
