    That is THE explanation lol

Yeah, I think some don't realize just how deep some of the mechanics are in this game and quite frankly, R* doesn't do a very good job in explaining some of them.  I mean, we are all learning some of these things by accident or through each other as we share our experiences.  Some of this information seems scattered at best.

There have been a couple folks around here that have gone on rants about the bounty system but I could see by their posts that it was simply a lack of understanding of how the mechanic works.  I'm glad to see you're at least open to explanations and tips people here have provided.

There is a method to the madness and deeper than some understand.  Here is a pretty decent explanation

    https://www.dexerto.com/red-dead-redemption/how-to-never-get-a-bounty-in-red-dead-redemption-2-wanted-system-explained-218399

    Quote

    Witnesses
The first thing to understand is witnesses. Any individual or individuals who see Arthur commit a crime, from disturbing the peace to cold blooded murder, will become witnesses. You can see these witnesses marked on the mini-map with an eye symbol. Use a mask around them and stop and intimidate them into not talking if there is only one of them.

If you do not use a mask, witnesses will immediately recognize you as Arthur Morgan. You will know if they have recognized you are not, as it will either say 'Unknown Suspect' or 'Arthur Morgan' underneath the Wanted sign in the top right.

This wanted loop, via Reddit user BurayanFury, comes from the Red Dead Redemption 2 companion app, and provides the best breakdown of the Wanted and Bounty system, and how to never get a bounty.

    red-dead-redemption-2-wanted-level.jpg

    White eye witnesses

If the eye on the mini-map is white, they know some kind of commotion has occurred, but they don't know by whom or what. As long as you flee the scene quickly, you will get no bounty, as they do not know your identity to report to police.

    Dark red eye witnesses

These witnesses didn't get a good look at you either, and so as long as you have not committed a crime in that same area before wearing the same clothes and you are wearing a mask, simply escape the scene and you will not get a bounty.

    Bright red eye witnesses

These witnesses have seen the crime and know exactly who you are. These witnesses you definitely want to stop and intimidate them into not talking. However, if there are multiple dark red eye witnesses, you are best to just flee the scene and accept your bounty.

    Lawmen
Lawmen appear to have super powers in Red Dead Redemption 2, as even if you are wearing a mask, they will immediately recognize you as Arthur Morgan through any disguise. If this happens, you will get a bounty.

If you recently had a bounty in an area, and you return to the same area with the same clothes, hairstyle and horse, you will be instantly recognized when you commit another crime, even if you have a mask on.

If worst comes to worst, and you do get a bounty, you simply need to head to a post office to pay it off.

At lower wanted levels, when you haven't committed crimes too severe, you will also get the option to surrender to the law. In this case, you will taken to a local jail where you will wait out your sentence, but members of your gang will also come to help break you out.

The "report post" feature flags content as reported by users.  Nobody flagged this, but I try to keep an eye on things.  When things get flagged, Moderators receive email reports, so we can fix the problem much quicker if reported.  I've edited both the title and OP of this thread, and will continue to do so as things like this pop up, but the response will be much quicker if things are reported going forward.

That goes for "soliciting" posts, too.  If someone creates a thread or post to bump viewership of their private Twitch or Youtube channel, a Discord server, or other service, please flag and report IMMEDIATELY.

I'm usually careful about what I report (don't want to be a pest) but given your response, I'll submit these in the future if I run across them.

    Thanks Creed.

  4. I think everything can be summed up in your previous thread.

The responses won't be any different in this new thread.  Simply sounds like you need to move on especially now that you sold the game.

As for the hyperbole about the game's success not being real, there were people like you who said the same thing about GTAV and that title just passed the 100 million unit mark several years later.   .....RDR2 hit 17 mil in less than two weeks.  Hype only carries a game so far my friend. I suspect if you come back in a couple months you'll see a similar trend with RDR2.  Hell, I'll wager Christmas will bring in a quite a few sales alone.

Let's get something straight though.....  My issue isn't with you or your perception, dislike, etc. of the game.  It's the irrational remarks that just because you hate the game, that somehow everyone else will feel the same.

I felt strongly about FC5 and I voiced my opinion on Ubi's official forums (big difference there) in hopes that some things would change but not once did I think that my opinion was true for everyone else.  They still made a tidy sum off that game.  .....c 'est la vie.  I moved on.

Me too homie. Can't wait for to get things started. 😎

Well, looks like we've got a few players here now. That should make it easier for folks to find people to team up with once RDO is online. I've got a few on PSN as well.  3 I've known for a long time and IIRC, 7 others who have joined up since. I'm just trying to get enough like minded players together so we all have a pool to tap into.

    Still got this group going?

Yes, sorry. I didn't see this post until now.  As Creed mentions, we are all just waiting to see when RDO launches. I'm still savoring the campaign for now.

I am not talking about the story, just the online beta. I am saying when the beta testing is open, I will likely be waiting until it is out of beta to play online since I wouldn't want to risk losing online progress.

Ah, ok.   Yeah, assuming it's even an issue I guess.

  8. No bug.....   Just a design decision likely to keep the game world alive and interactive.  If NPCs didn't respawn the game might get boring pretty quick depending on how you play.

Note that the inhabitants will not be as friendly when you return though, sometimes refusing you entirely.

    Spoiler

Hell, a couple of them weren't that friendly to begin with which is why I antagonized a couple of them and the whole village came after me.  ....had to wipe them all out.  Sounds like the same location.

I do wish that the respawn would have a longer delay though.  .....perhaps a day or two?

  9. Please, please , please use the following guidelines when posting details about side events and missions.  There are a lot of people here that would rather discover these things themselves as surprises.  Using the format in the link below will ensure those who don't want to spoilers will not mistakenly run across them.

    As for the particular event:

    Spoiler

The whole event was strange as it had a kind of Deliverance feel to it.  ....which I think was the joke.   .....and yeah, I went back and killed him too.  He ran back inside as soon as I arrived so I gunned him down, looted the place and threw a couple molotov cocktails in there.  ;)

If they do say that everything will be reset after they leave the beta testing phase then I absolutely will not play until beta testing is over. I am even debating on playing now because of the "risk" of something happening and things being wiped by accident. I don't want to invest like 10+ hours into it and it all be wiped out or something.

The online isn't even available yet so there is no risk of playing the game now.  The campaign has nothing to do with it at this point.  You won't lose any of that.

  11. The fact is that we simply don't know.  I guess it would depend on what changes would have to be made before final release, resetting servers, etc.

The other thing to consider is that this isn't a closed beta or one only available for pre-orders, etc.  This is open to everyone who bought the game so everyone will be on a level playing field when the beta begins.  In other words, there isn't going to be anyone sitting on the sidelines during the beta who will be at a disadvantage when final launches.  With that in mind, there is no reason to start anyone over for that reason (which is good news IMO).

Unless something requires a big fix , I also have a feeling this beta will continue up to the final update as Bandit alluded to.  I think the main point here is that they wanted to give RDO the "beta" label so folks will understand that it will launch with possible issues that will need to be addressed.  .....to keep the naysayers from totally slamming it.  There is only so much they can test internally without an official closed or open beta.  ......and even with those there are usually problems that crop up when online components of games are released.

In a nutshell, if I had to guess, I would say that R* likely plans that progress would be retained by players barring any unexpected problems that would require a reset.

Im just not getting it. And I feel it sucks. let me give you an example. I found a Mexican shooting bottles and he wanted a competition, so I joined in and grabbed my rifle. While shooting the bottles I went to reload and the reload button made me punch him so he started shooting me. I reload the last save and return to the area and he's not there. So I reload the save again and go into the shooting competition and I DONT HAVE A RIFLE ANYMORE!  WTH? The save system sucks. The crafting system is over-complicated. I went to kill the legendary bear and I couldn't get anything from it but the skin.... and as I left there was a woman trapped under a horse that needed help so I dumped the skin and helped her, only to find ….. NEVER ****IN MIND. This game sucks.

    1)  The reload button is also the melee button. If you're close to someone and push that button, you will knock them with the butt of the weapon, etc.  Lesson learned, move on.  These are repeatable, randomized events and not the end of the world.  I had to kill the same guy because I didn't realize I didn't have the money to pay him when I lost.  ......c 'est la vie.  Could also be tied to your settings for auto aim / locking on.  I have my sensitivities set really low personally as I hated the way it would pull me toward targets that I didn't want to engage.

    2) The rifle is on your horse. You need to grab it before you start any of these types of activities.  You'll see what is equipped on you when you're on foot.  I always equip the weapons I want before getting off and then make sure they appear on my back before I engage.

    3) The crafting system isn't overly complicated depending on what you're trying to craft but then again, it isn't required or necessary either.  You can essentially play the whole game without crafting anything if you want to.  I don't craft things except for certain types of ammo and that's really simple.

    4) What else did you want from the bear?  I think I got a claw and the skin.  Check your inventory but either way, the skin is the main point.

    5) So since you won't elaborate on the downed girl encounter, I'm guessing you dropped the bear skin and it disappeared when you decided to help the woman get to wherever she needed to go?  I would have chose the skin over the woman but either way, all legendary animal skins will automatically go to the Trapper if you lose track of them.  Check with your local Trapper.

Sounds like you're insistent on believing the game is crap regardless.  ......and quite frankly, I don't see the experience changing for you anytime soon with that sort of focus.

Again, if you're struggling with a part of the game there are plenty of folks here willing to help.  .....but if you're simply looking to express your dissatisfaction with it, that's fine too but I just wouldn't expect and overwhelming acceptance from others here in regard to your opinion.  I guess my advice at this point would be don't try to force a square peg in a round hole if you sincerely don't like the game regardless of your reasons.  It's not worth the frustration.

To me that is the problem.  I start something it leads me half across the map.  Then I have to return back to the beginning to start the next thing.  It is kind of a pain not to be able to fast travel to certain locations once unlocked.  Which I get why they do it, so you have chances at other missions or encounters, but kills the buzz traveling back to the beginning every time.

It's not that big of deal IMO.  Most times, the missions are not that far from the main camp but even so there are sometimes other options when they are.  ....stagecoaches and trains for example.

Personally, when out and about I take that opportunity to visit fences to unload goods, buy new weapons, do side activities / missions that may be available, get a haircut, etc.

I like way R* has immersed me into the game world this way.

Finished or not, I think it was a good move to wait on the online because of the story mode. I feel like if both were to come out on the same day, I would feel rushed.

They even said that they wanted players to experience the campaign first.  ....to get used to the game world, mechanics and controls before diving into RDO.

Literally just figured that out yesterday when I was tinkering with my UI settings to set up a photo of a corpse wall comprised of O'Driscolls.

I have to say, playing the game with nothing on the screen (not even a mini map) and using the companion app instead is absolutely something everyone should experience.  The immersion is frightening if for no other reason than how gorgeous the game is.

I wish I could use the companion app but alas, my devices are a wee bit too old as they don't have the latest version of Android that is required for the app.  I don't know why they made it incompatible with previous versions but it is what it is.  .....my phone isn't even that old.

Yeah I feel like looting and receiving the pocket watches, etc. is overlooked.

You can make some good, quick money from that stuff.  After an ambush I can hear the faint sound of "cha ching" as I look at the dead bodies around me.

Also, the tonics......   I don't hold on to those.  I sell nearly all of them except for a could potent health tonics and the horse revivers.  You can only hold on to so many and these things are frequently on dead bodies I loot, in homes, etc.  It's a waste otherwise as those too bring in some decent cash.  .....it all adds up.

  17. Yeah, I did the same thing.  I wasn't sure what was going to happen to all the loot so I rushed in to collect it all before the fire spread.

......needless to say the idea crossed my mind to use this new found knowledge of the fire mechanic to my advantage in the future.    ;)

Had to start a new game twice now just trying to learn the controls and everything seems to be a very over-complicated mess. The original Red Dead games were fun and this? It just seems like too much. I just cant get the hang of it. Feel very disappointed about it, regret even buying the damned game.  There doesn't seems to be as much open exploration, and the amount a crap items and the economy and trying to juggle all this garbage seems over tedious. Anyone else feel this way?

As mentioned, the first two games were not the same and RDR2 is simply an evolution of RDR1.

What it essentially boils down to is that the devs added more depth to the mechanics, UI, AI, etc.  ....and it's all the better for it IMO.  The controls are similar to RDR1 and also GTAV.  I'm not sure what you are struggling with but if you give us some specifics, we would be more than happy to help.

Not enough open exploration?  How far have you progressed in the game?  Believe me....  The game opens way up at around Chapter II IIRC.  The whole game world is open to you and there are a ton of side missions, random events, activities, etc. Some you unlock along the way.

Crap items?  Like what exactly?  The economy is pretty simple and as you progress, new opportunities present themselves to you as new ways to make money.  ....bounties, pelts, meat from game, fishing, herbs, stealing wagons, horses, robbing trains, holding up stage coaches, gang camps / hideouts, robbing houses, etc.  As you progress, fences begin to become available where you can sell stolen goods and valuable items.  A stable that will give you top dollar for stolen horses, etc., etc.  You choose what you prefer.

I can understand some disagreeing about some of the aspects of the game like controls and such (everyone is different), but to say the RDR2 doesn't have as much open exploration as RDR1 is flat out wrong.  RDR2 is bigger and has more going on in it's game world than RDR1 ever did.

Please be mindful that I am asking how to obtain what was lost. I am not on here telling everyone what is going on. I just want my horse back! Can anyone possibly help me regain the horse? I tried to replay the mission, no dice. Can this horse be found in the game elsewhere?

Throttle back there tiger.....  I wasn't being condescending but simply pointing out that this forum and many of its members would prefer that any potential spoilers to the story be edited as pointed out in that sticky I linked you to.  You included parts of the story / mission in your description.  It's just a matter of courtesy.

A mod was even kind enough to edit your original post for you.  .....carry on.
