Fishing was fun in FC5.   ......for about 15 minutes.

FC5 was the only title I actually regretted buying in a long time.  Not just disappointment but actual regret for a # of reasons.

That being said, can you see fishing being more entertaining for longer in RDR2? Especially if they incorporate the things listed above?

This is pretty much in FC5, not sure if you've played it.

Nope. In fact, I didn't even know what the abbreviation stood for until I looked it up.  ????

So you think RDR2 would deliberately avoid something like that for that reason?

Ehhhhh fishing will be part of SP so it will automatically be available online. This is the way that this works.

As boring as it sounds on the surface, I think fishing challenges actually sounds rather cool if it's done right.

I'd love to go on a hunt for "the big one," especially if there's a legendary huge catfish in a lake on a mountaintop somewhere, and you not only have to find the lake, but you have to find the right bait and gear, THEN bring it in.

Imagine having to haul a monster fish down to your horse like a dead body, then triumphantly bringing it into town. Sounds cool to me!

Because you're looking at it through the prism of unbalanced gameplay ala F13th.

There are plenty of ways to balance something like this, such as having statistical caps on gear, or limiting player options for gear to the race--not bringing in outside gear.

Perhaps have it set up with a budget where you can select certain horses, armor, or weapons within a fixed price range, gear up, and then participate.  There are a lot of ways to balance the mechanics of something like this to put player ability first; faster horses have lower stamina; heavy armor decreases horse speed; faster horses create more inaccuracy if firing while moving...

That's a good point. In the original RDR, you weren't allowed to use your multiplayer character in challenges - you were assigned a generic character (e.g., Miners, Cattle Rustlers, etc.) who were all on the same leveled playing field.

I guess under those circumstances, it could work.

The fact that you could kill off your competition by shooting them from horseback, or via other methods during the race.

In fact, THAT's how I'd work in a BR mode while having a unique take on it.  These won't be short sprints from town to town--each match should go, say 20-25 minutes with a full lobby, depending on the skill level of those involved.

That's pretty cool, but wouldn't that just come down to who has the:

    • Best armor
    • Heaviest gun
    • Fastest horse

    ?

    How do YOU avoid it?

Honestly, I avoid it by blasting through it.

Luckily, I tend to have all my work assignments available days or even weeks beforehand. As soon as I get in for the day, I check emails and messages, then DIVE into my assignments and finish them quickly.

That really leaves me the rest of the day to do whatever.

Oh my bad, didn't even think about it. I'll try to watch what I say better, thanks for letting me know!

Yeah, it does make sense. While both RDR and F13 are Rated M games -- the likelihood of having younger players interested in an Old West/Cowboy game is much greater than them being interested in a 1980's-era horror game.

See @Truth, now we're gonna have to be frickin' ROLE MODELS . . . *sigh!* If only they didn't admire us so . . .

  8. Here's the way I look at it. (*deep breath*)

In the original RDR Multiplayer, there were LOTS of "camp" places for the Shootout games.

One notorious one was at the front-center of the sanctuary in Las Hermanas.

It was right in the red circle in this image:

    zvzsqe.jpg

If you'll note the wooden crates on the ground (to the right of the sanctuary) here, that's where you could begin climbing up to get there.

Once there, you could take cover behind that raised wall in the red circle, then have a bird's eye view of the WHOLE playing field.

    Pick folks off one . . . by one . . . by one.

    It was GREAT!!

. . . unless someone on the OTHER team was doing it to yours. Then it blew.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuttttt -- there WERE a few ways to get rid of the camping sniper, and when you did THAT, boy was it satisfying!!

So -- yes, there were negatives, but I think the positives outweighed the negatives. Campers picking people off my team only challenged me to find ways to eliminate them.

Which, in turn, made me better.

So, do I think "camping" should be removed? No way.

That  said, it MIGHT be nice to have a few extra WEAPONS which would assist in eliminating said campers.

Say . . . more dynamite? ("Oooh, you're camping up there? Here, catch!" *KA-BLAMMO!*

I have high expectations for this game.  ????

I carpet bombed the General section of the forum by necroing the oldest threads with timely responses.  There was a LOT of hilarious stuff in the older posts, like JPop calling Miller the Plaintiff in the suit (false), and a lot of other inaccuracy or outright misrepresentation by Gun/Illfonic on a whole host of things.

Ben didn't like me calling them out with proof, so all the threads were deleted as were my responses, and I was summarily temp-banned without warning or notice.  It wouldn't bother me if I had been misrepresenting things or lying, but no, wait, that was them.  Selectively censoring old posts just because it made them look bad, and then barring me for a week under false pretenses (Ben literally said it was only for spam posting, but I'm not an idiot) really pissed me off.  They can have their echo chamber; I literally just go in there and take pot shots with the truth, that it anymore.

I'll never get rid of it because when I have friends over, they all want to play it, but that community is in hospice at this point.  They ban or censor any sort of dissent, and have their buddies on the content creation side come in and white knight for them (like the director of Never Hike Alone, or the puzzle game folks) while bending the rules for some users and crushing any opposition.

It used to be fun.  I never took it seriously until they decided to make an example of me.  I told everyone in the forums that I "fell down some stairs" because it was funny while hinting at the gross nature of their actions.  They can have it.  I'm leaning in here.

Well, we're glad you're here. You make a most welcome addition.

    I didn't get a notification for this...

You have to turn them on under "Account Settings". Unlike F13, they're not on by default. But also unlike F13, this forum allows you many more options for customization.  I switched mine on and now I get all the notifications I want.

My little "timeout" on F13 was the first time I was reprimanded in 20 years of online forum participation across dozens of games.  I think that little factoid speaks for itself.

Wasn't aware you ever got sent to the penalty box. May we ask what for?

I already preordered it for launch day.  I have an October birthday, and told my wife it was her gift to me, which is how we roll--everyone gets what they want, and no time is wasted. It's all coming out of the same pot of money anyways.

How nice for you! MY birthday is in JANUARY!!! ????

I stream stuff on Hulu and Netflix mostly.

Same here. I watch the Cowboys during football season on my digital antenna, then mostly watch Netflix and recordings on Philo in my downtime. (Well, not as much nowadays since I've started the RDR single-player campaign over again. I beat it in 2010, and am trying again now eight years later to re-sharpen my skills for the October release. Even though I probably won't get it until Christmas!)

    Ugghhh... FINE...

I'm more of a "desert BEFORE dinner" kind of guy. How can you have any meat if you don't eat your pudding, right?

I think ya got that one backwards there, Roger Waters . . .

Got far enough that I was able to play poker lol

I just haven't been in a gaming mood lately. I'm trying though!

Also, it turns out I got the GOTY edition (which includes undead nightmare). Might give that a spin tonight.

I wouldn't! Focus on the prize! Finish the single-player campaign first!

Think of Undead Nightmare as the "After-credits" bonus. Plus, you'll need to have your skills sharpened from the first campaign to do well in the main Undead Nightmare campaign.

Let regular RDR Single-Player be your meat and potatoes. Let Undead Nightmare  be your "dessert".  ????

I was wondering about that. I just started, so I obviously don't have it yet. I thought when I started the second game it said I was now able to cheat, but it never said how... I guess I misread it.

You're playing single-player now? I completed it when I got the game in 2010, and just started it over this month for a refresher. Can't believe how much I'm into it again! How far along are you in the campaign? I'm already working with Irish to get the gatling gun.

I just brought this up in another thread. I think it would be a cool feature. Like say you get yourself a dog. It can serve as a hunting partner but also as an alert. Like if someone is nearby and you can't see them in your sight, the dog will start to growl. Like to me, this would be a really cool thing.

I like this. A lot. Dogs were important in the Old West -- as both companions and helpers. It would definitely be cool to be able to befriend a dog (or a WOLF!) and have it accompany you. You could even train it to attack.

Plus, even if it isn't in the game now, it's something the devs could add later in an update.

    Very good idea, sir.

Would work for offline definitely, and I wouldn't mind it being in the game. Wouldn't work for online of course as it's realtime.

I was thinking of single-player when I composed this, but now you have me wondering how it might work in multiplayer! Maybe it would be cool if you had to find a place to stay before you quit the game? You know, to protect your stuff? Just like you have to do in real life?

None of these things is perfect, but separately (or together), they could add another layer to immersion.

And immersion is what this game should really be all about. I'm as jazzed about this game as I am because I so well remember the immersive qualities of its predecessor. If this game can take a step-up from there, it will be my new favorite of all time.

Yeah personally I like that from an immersion point of view. Could get annoying when you're working through the missions though. If they did introduce it they would have to perhaps have it as an option to switch on / off, but I can't see that happening.

Yeah, but NOT having that is one of the most UNrealistic aspects of video games! Since the creation of humanity, we've had to adjust our schedules around sleep and downtime. Why should we not have to make the same adjustments in this game?

Hell, in the long run, it'd just be: you're getting sluggish and tired. (and hungry??) Find a place to camp or stay for the night for a meal and a rest. You do, and you sit down to eat as the game fades out. Then it fades back in a few hours later with you getting up and stretching. Game back on. Total time invested: 30 seconds.

Well, unless you can't find a good place to hunker down for the night. But that would add more to the game, in my opinion.

I just find that the quality of tv shows has really dropped in recent years.  I can't stand any talk shows that are trashy, like Steve Wilkos, Maury, those kind of shows.  One person tells their side, and without hearing the other person's side, the audience automatically 'boo's' them as they're walking out.  And then of course Steve Wilkos tries to intimidate them and act like a tough guy.  Talk shows are fine like Dr. Phil, and Steve Harvey, but the really dramatic 'over the top' ones really annoy me.   Also, shows like Judge Judy who I find unprofessional and rude, I find really annoying.  I've been to court so many times and have never once heard a judge be even half as ignorant as her.  I know loan sharks that are more polite than her!

I agree. Just look at the difference between the original series and the remade series of MacGyver.

    I adore the original.

    The remake is unwatchable.

  20. I'm well aware the original game did include "rest" periods -- purchasing rooms/houses with beds, setting up camp, etc.

But that was mainly a function to either save your progress, fast-travel, or fast-forward time so you could complete certain missions.

But if you wanted to, you could play for DAYS ON END without resting your character.

One function I wished the rest periods HAD served is to RE-ENERGIZE your player.

While it may end up ultimately being a pain in the tookus, I think it would be cool to have a "Fatigue Meter." Something that keeps track of how long you've been awake.

If you've been awake for a full day, you start to slow down and get sluggish, so you have to start looking for a place to bunk down.

(It might even be interesting if, occasionally, someone tried to break in or loot your camp while you slept. Maybe you have to play a mini-game to see if you wake up or defend yourself/your stuff in time?)

Anyway, I think that would add a nice level of realism to the game.

    Thoughts?
