This I wrote now in the commentary box of digital foundry. I hope we receive an answer.
Hey guys I´m a big fan of your channel. How I can talk privately with you about the problems of red dead redemption 2 on the ps4 pro. I mean the technical issues. Do you send a messsage to rockstar games? Is this the game that you have tested two month before. I think not. The blur destroys the game experience on the pro. I think it has nothing to do with the implemantation of checkerboard rendering. It is to much of motion blur in the game and to agressive taa. Sharpen slider is only in the 1080p mode. This is why the game looks so much better in 1080p.
I´ve really sensible eyes. I can play all other titles on the pro. No other majortitle release has that big graphical issues. We must start a petition. You guys can look at this thread. It is a major problem for all users on the ps4 pro. A lot of gamers bought a ps4 pro right now, with the bundle version of rdr2. What is sony thinking about this mistake? Is rockstar cashcowing us? I have Odyssey to, and it runs pretty well on the pro and looks ten times better on the pro.
Look at this forum guys, please. You can help this friendly community of rdr2 users on play station pro a lot. WE need some more advertising on this problem. We receive only answers from rockstar that the hdr is bugged but that is not the problem. Become solutions that does´nt have somethig to do with the issue. It is not a hardware issue. A lot of the users in this forum playing on 10 bit oled displays with premium hdr are cables and premium hardware. That is not our problem. All other titles running well and looking gorgeos.
Please help us and gave a statemement and give us some of your expert support. We need it.
Thanxs guys for all your technical analyzes on all titles. I like your channel so much.
Here is the link for the forum.

It would be a great help for the ps4 pro Community if somebody like Digital Foundry would explicit talk about the blurry mess that rdr2 is on the ps4 pro
I like digtal foundry. It is one of my favourite channels on you tube. How I can talk with the guys. I´m a tech freak. It is my personal hobby.

Oh sh*t wrong forum
I´m going crazy I´m a traumatized human soldier that need that game to relax in a western dream in the outback.
-
I´ve played now detroit become human another title. That is one of the best exclusives for the pro. Watching tv was yesterday. Wow. This game must play a lot of politicians and big bosses like the rockstar bosses. All people that are think we are pinochios or slaves that are making money and are not interested of all the other problems in the whole world. This game let you cry. It shows you what human being is and what human being you are. This is the poor reality that we have right now.

I also like many others was writing a message to the R* support but I just got a generic answer from them like everyone else
I receive no answer since 5 days.

I bought a x Box one X now. I´m so stoopid only for this game.

ok good to know so if R* will spend their time to fix this issue we can have a clear immage.
Yes I hope so. We have a small developerteam in germany, that are all hard workers. THe team is called Piranha bytes. They work with the community. I like how the team is working and spend time for the fanbase community. That are the team of gothic one and two and the risen series . the last output was elex. Elex is nearly bug free. They put different temporal antialiasing solutions in the game on pc, a button to turn off motion blur and depth of field.
This was a small team and they throw out the patch after 3 month of the release. This are only a team of 25 persons. I think rockstar can do this in a month if they want that.
I don´t know how difficult it is to integrate real hdr 10. The witcher 3 becomes hdr at the cost of less details on the ps4 pro. It is not the best HDR solution. THey work on the patch a half year after the ps4 pro enhanced patch was released.
HDR is not my biggest problem. If you have a 10 Bit display you can use yuv420 option of your ps4 pro or ps4. The colours looking amazing without hdr.
I hope they fix the game in one or two month nearly completely. Look at assassins creed odyssey. The team throw out patches every week. It runs now very good on the pro with real good hdr implementation.

if the Problem is coming from the checkerboard rendering is there even a Chance for us to see a patch which corrects the blurry optic?
It is the motion blur and to agressive taa. temporal antialiasing. You can fix the checkerboard issues, but not the rest. Start red dead redemption in 1080p resolution, set the sharpening slider under display options to zero. Go in you ps4 pro settings menu, change the resolution to 2160p rgb, go back into the game. Not shut down the game befor, only switching in your ps4 settings. Now you will have a sharpening slider. Set the sharpening slider to max, turn off hdr. Now you can see the distance sharpness is back, but you have the to agressive motion blur and the taa.
The cashcow is the publisher not the developerteam I think. They can outsource the work for patches to a different studio. They have enough money and capacity.
Yes I´m really angry about the politics of the publisher gave no beta copies out nothing. You can read my anger about the issues in the support forum.
-
Ithink we can wait a long time for a patch
espite the small hiccup, Red Dead Redemption 2 has been a massive success for Rockstar. The open-world western sold through $725 million USD worth of copies in its first three days, making it the biggest opening weekend in entertainment history.
They gave us a gam ein beta status, with gamebreaking bugs and massive graphical glitches and sold out 750 million dollars in the first three dayz. No thanks nothing. We are only slaves that pay for a beta game. God of war was a million seller too in a week, but the developerteam and the publisher thanks the users that buy that game.
No respect from rockstar to the owners of the game. Nothing
Owners of the PS4 must ignore dlcs and anything else what come out for red dead redemption 2. I have the gamebreaking issue too. -
How many cash they made on PS4 Pro right now it is unacceptable. I found it is real different with the blur on some places. pusuits as a bountyhunter or hunting is absoloutely unacceptable. Yes it looks real fast, but I can see anything. It is all in the blur. I´m waiting now. I hope on monday we become an answer. I´m not buying a One X for One Game it has nothing to do with the power of the pro. The difference in graphics on my TV is to small between X and pro. I hate the menu of the X Box and the Controller is not optimal for me.
But a real big different on this game makes a premium cable. I´ve tested the original cable off the pro and my 2.0b cable instead of my 48 GB Bandwith 2.1 cable. 2.1 makes a big difference on 4k. It looks much sharper and detailed, but the blur is always there.
Testing Scene was the Camp of the Gang in the near of Valentine.

This i wrote now in th esupport forum:

Hello, I wrote tickets too, to support. This is a major issue. It blurs in many ways:to agressive motion blurto agressive depth of fieldto agressive temporal antialiasing which doesn´t work correctly with the checkerboard rendering. What can they do:Fix the sharpen slider for checkerboard resolutiongave us a button to turn off motion blurUse SMAA for Antaliasing instead of TAA. This will give a performance boost too. TAA costs a lot more Performance. You have no jagged edges with taa but to the cost of a blurry image. Look at Shadows of the Tomb Raider on PC. The TAA destroys the Texture Quality and sharpness totally. Gave us in a second Patch better HDR. Take the time to patch this. This will take a while I think. But I think the Sharpen Slider can be integrated by a hotfix. This is why the 1080p Image looks so good.I don´t think it is the checkerboarding only. It is the combination of checkerboarding and TAA, My other Theory is in One frame are two images. One of the higher solution and on e of the 1080p resolution. I can´t understand while the sharpness is is dimming to blurriness all second. Without moving Arthur or the Charakter. Tis is so strange. with to agressive motion blur when you turn around the camera. You can not focus anything of the picture when all this troble of blur is going on. Before I´ve made my own configuration for my TV and switching off the fake HDR, my eyes are going tired since a half hour of gameplay and a headache and problems with my stomach is overwhelming me since an hour of gameplay.I wrote that all in a ticket. I think it is our work on rdr2.org that all this would be adressed now. This is my username of rdr2.org I send in my last ticket a link of the thread on rdr2.org to the support team.I like the game really, but most of my time, I´m going crazy and pull all out of my tv to become an better image of rdr2Oh sh...t what a bad gramma and that now in the official forum. Oh my god that is my username on social club. How can I fix this. This username is out of the past. GTA IV. I don´t know.-

Hello, i think you both are talking about motion blur, a simple effect that normally can be disabled, unfortunately you can't disable it on red dead redemption 2, same on xbox.
please create a topic about it on the rockstar support forum,
Good example to show motion blur artur. Never used it in Witcher 3 ;), but the sharpen option to throw out blur from textures. One of the best games ever for me.

Yes, I think so. I wrote a ticket now about this issue. For me, the sharpen slider is there if I switching from 1080p to 2160p without restarting the game. The slider is not working for me in 2160p. When I restert the game the slider is not their.
-
You lost a lot of signal and stability of the image to do it right this way. Another thing can be the length of the HDMI Cable. Connect your TV directly with your console.
-
start the game and look on your screen. This is what I saw. sharpness or blurriness is dimming up and down. Motion Blur is producing a very blurry image on turning around with the camera. On fast horseriding all looks messed up. I become a headache and tiring eyes since 1 hour of gaming. Turn off hdr or using 1080p mode is not a solution for me. The TAA blur is to agressive too. All my other major PS4 Pro titles looking really clean. Here are some of the titles. Spiderman, Uncharted 4, Assassins Creed Odyssey, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War and many more. This is how he should look. This is previous footage https://www.youtube.com/w This is what I think the combination of too much TAA instead off SMAA and checkerboard rendering and too much agressive motion blur and depth of field, destroy the image quality on PS4 Pro totally. It outputs blurry Textures and blurry surroundings and cutscenes. It is miles away from the XBox One X Version. Why is the sharpen slider only in the 1080p resolution? Is it a bug?
This is what I wrote in the official Forum and in a ticket.
This is what I want:
The sharpen slider in 4k mode
A button to turn off motion blur
smaa instead of taa
I wrote in the ticket, that this is not a problem of our hardware, our tv´s I put the link of this thread into my ticket.
I hope this must help too

I rarely post on forums to discuss problems with a game, such as the problems with RDR2, but I have been waiting on this game since I played the original RDR back in college and was amazed by how ahead of its time it was.
To start with the technical details - I'm running the game on a PS4 Pro CUH-7115B and a Sony X900E. I've had my TV calibrated using CalMAN and a Klein K10-A colorimeter. I know what I'm doing, I'm also familiar with graphics and 3D rendering.
Secondly, RDR2 is a gorgeous game. The attention to detail is amazing. But it's a blurry mess on the Pro 4K mode...
All other PS4 Pro Enhanced titles that I've played (GoW, HZD, Spider-Man) which are using a reconstruction method to output to 4K look absolutely great on my TV, as other forum members have already stated.
The softness of RDR2 in '4K mode' on PS4 Pro is a multifaceted issue, but so far, I believe it can be contributed to mostly:
- Reconstructing horizontally from only 1920 pixels.
- Adding an aggressive temporal anti-aliasing (R*'s TAA) solution on top of that reconstruction to 'soften' things even further.
So far, this will be enough to ruin the texture quality and sharpness of some objects for some scenarios and quite badly so. Then, we add other graphical engine features that can soften the image even further and we've got a blurry image as a result. I think on their own they add to the game's visual quality but having to work with only 1920x2160 (this is essentially 2 times less the resolution of the One X), they are actually detrimental:
- Per-pixel motion blur in high movement moments.
- Generally high-quality depth of field.
- A ton of volumetric fog and lighting.
This is partly why I always go for FXAA or SMAA on my PC and reduce or completely disable motion-blur, especially if it's badly implemented. There's motion blur, then there's motion blur and then there's the poor man's motion blur, like back in the 2008-2012 days.
HDR doesn't have anything to do with all of this, but since RDR2's 'HDR' implementation is actually not HDR, it washes out the colors and takes away the color 'pop' that even some SDR games can have. This means that, allegorically, some if not most people playing RDR2 in 4K mode with HDR (especially if you follow their ridiculous recommendation of 100 nits for LCD TVs) will feel like HDR makes the image even softer.
So, is there a problem? Yes, there is.
Have Rockstar acknowledged it? No, they have not.
Are they doing anything about it? We don't know, unfortunately, unless someone has insider information.
I found a single post about this blurry/soft image on PS4 Pro problem on the official forums from the 26th of October and it was downvoted and ignored:

I stopped playing the game after about 4-5 hours in, because my eyes hurt. I've never had this problem with any other game and I have good eye-sight, just as some other dudes here were pointing out.
I can't enjoy it properly and it's an unpleasant experience.I understand all of your posting. You are an expert and can help a lot more users here. My english is to bad. This is what I want say to the community right here. Yes, it is a big combination of all what can blur in a game in so many ways. This is what I like on PC Gaming you configure your games completely. Another question is where I can find a good calibrator for my tv like the spider for professionell PC Displays?
My TV is a LG Nanocell SK8500LLA 2018 Generation. 55 Inch Display connected with a 48 GIgabyte hdmi cable on HDMI Port One.
Where I can found the official discussion forum?
Can you send me a link?

So I can only say again and again, the HDMI cable that you use makes the difference. Use a premium HDMI cable and you have no stuttering in valentine. Only for one or two seconds. Clean your PS4, because the heat that was produced by this game is really high. The cooling system of the ps4 is maxed out on this game in the cities or in overcast and rainy situations. The same for God of War in the Releasemonth
Edit use a cooling pad for the old ps4

So I found this on digital foundry. This is what we want. THis is ps4 pro footage from 2 month ago. Look how clean all is looking. Now I found out what gaves me those tired eyes. The sharpness or smoothness is dimming, look at a field of grass and you see what I mean. Go to your tv and look close to the image. The process depends all a few seconds. I think it is dynamically. They switch resolution between 1080p and 1920x2160p. This is not only the problem from the taa. It is if you dimm your light slowly in your accomondation and rise it up al every half second up and down. sharpness-blurriness and this is what I gave us tired eyes and a headache. I become stomach ache since an hour, my brain can´t worked out with this switching off sharpness or bluriness.
I think they are two resolutions in one frame, switching evry half second.
-
For me now the best solution is, sorry for my crappy english: I´m using now hdmi port 1, go from automatic settings of the ps4 pro to 2160p rgb. Turn off hdmi, set dynamic super resolution to middle value, raising up sharpness a little and using lok dimming on lowest value. Image is much cleaner, and what I saw now the checkerboarding resolution is not bad. The blur comes from taa and the bad implementation of motion blur and hdr. This is my Theory.
Now I´m using a 2.1 hdmi cable from kabel direkt. It do a better work than the belkin 2.1 cable. All games looking more detailed with this.
I´ve played 3 hours but now my eyes are tired.
-
If you use the standard cable, you want have that experience that you will have with a premium cable. Standard Cable has not a highspeed bandwith of 18GB or with 2.1 of 48 GB. Do you have an external hard drive for installing this game?
-
On PC it is real buggy. Crashing a lot of times if you are online in uplay. On PS4 Pro. I have no crashes no bugs. Mercenary bug seemed to be fixed right now. I think the overall graphic is a lot improved compared to origins on consoles, not really on PC.
Yes the mission design is way better in RDR2, but on pS4 Pro I have a lot of technical issues. Mission that I have absolved are not saved, and i can begin again and again. FRamerate stutters after an hour of playing. Cutcenes looking washed out. Textures are on low resolution. Yeah and the blurry mess. Control is not working really smooth in weapon gunplay. I think it would be the best Game since san andreas. I really love that game in the past.

Definitely not playing as much as I would if it looked good. I usually just play for about an hour before I get tired of the crazy depth of field and blurriness.
Yey, me too. Everything new about patch? German online magazine ignores my posting. THey gave the game on all plattforms a 94% out of 100. Odyssey is 10 point less.
