Graham
Hi guys, I'm on the verg of freaking out because of this. I can't handle it anymore and need your help. Maybe you think that I'm overdramatizing but this is really annoying and killing the fun for me. When I'm riding the horse faster it begins to gasping and grunting monotonously. It makes the same noises over and over again. The sound sample for this is repeating like a broken record. And the stamina is blinking red don't know if this is what it supposed to do? This can't be the normal fast riding right? RIGHT!? Something has to be false here!? I know the game says that I have to press X/A in the rythm of the galop but it didn't work for me! I tried everything I could think of and it just doesn't work. It makes the noises and the stamina is blinking red. I'm going crazy here and losing the desire to play anymore. Please can someone help here a rusty old fart? Here is an example of the noises I'm talking about: Edited November 2, 2018 by Graham
Benjo
Yeah that's fast riding, and that's the noise horses make when they canter, especially uphill or over soft terrain. It's an odd thing to be put off the whole game for but then the sound of people eating loudly makes me want to kill them, so to each his own I guess. Stick with it, I'd say, and try to ignore it. Lucixir
I also find it ironic that no matter what type of horse you have, you can never out run lawman or bandits. Eventually you can with some turns and stutters but that's if you are lucky enough to survive the bullet barrage they will be giving you with almost pin point accuracy. I find fighting on horseback extremely annoying and uncoordinated. They really made this mechanic sh*t when it comes to horseback combat. All the crap we have to deal with as a human player the AI doesnt have to struggle with.

Oh man, that sucks. I really hoped that it was my mistake that the horse is grunting. They sound so monotonously and repetitive. How can this be real? It's like smashing the same sound sample over and over again. It just feels like a wrong feedback. 48 minutes ago, Lucixir said: I also find it ironic that no matter what type of horse you have, you can never out run lawman or bandits. Poggy
Is there a way to reduce in game noises in settings? Maybe adjust the sound settings (I tend to put the music louder, the effects lower) when you go for long ride?? Clutching at straws, I know, but only thing I can think of. I never even considered this an issue until now.
Skysaw
I noticed in the clip that your horse's stamina core is depleted. It's blinking to call your attention to that. Running up and down mountains full speed with a dead buck on its back, and no wonder it's complaining to you. The game is not broken -- it is trying to tell you something.
Dubya75
If you are mashing X constantly, you are pushing your horse to its limits and yes, he is going to grunt. You don't have to be galloping at full speed all the time. Get up to speed, then simply hold down X and your horse will do it's normal gallop speed without slowing down. And he won't use up any stamina either.
Melting Snowflakes
For me riding falls into 3 "fast" modes ... 1 tap - this is where I tap the "X" every stride of the horse, tap, tap, tap, tap, and that makes the horse go very fast, but it also slowly loses stats and pants, this is the stride when you're running away from a pack of something that you simply won't be able to survive, and also when you just want to get somewhere in a hurry and you know the horse can rest when you get there. 2 tap - this is where I tap the "X" every other stride of the horse, tap, pause, tap, pause, tap, pause, tap, pause, and that makes the horse run at a sustainable stride without losing stats, but it won't let the horse recover stats from 1 tap, for that you have to switch to 3 tap until stats recover. 3 tap - this is where I tap the "X" every third stride of the horse, tap, pause, pause, tap, pause, pause, tap, pause, pause, as the horse is running, and this is sustainable indefinitely, but is a little slower than 2 tap, and is really good for letting the horse make fast progress while recovering from 1 tap. That's how I do it, anyway.

Maybe you think that I'm overdramatizing but this is really annoying and killing the fun for me. As MS mentioned, you can time your button presses to the stride of the horse when in a full gallop and you won't deplete it's stamina. There is even mentioned of this in the tips you get in-game. There is also an option you can use to "toggle" the run button so that you don't have to keep pressing it. However, you will still need to tap it for full sprint / gallop. Your horse will begin grunting excessively and eventually start making many more noises as you deplete it's stamina or when you are not timing your button taps properly. In that video, look at how depleted the health and stamina cores are for the horse. Of course, the horse is going to start showing signs of fatigue and discontent. This is all feedback to help you understand your horse's current state. It will get restless when there are predators nearby, it will begin grunting and show signs of resisting when pushed too far, etc. Listen to what the horse is telling you and check the stats. Feed it when you begin to see depletions in the core(s). I don't think you're overdramatizing but I do think some other folks around here tend to assume the game is broken instead of accepting that they might be doing something wrong. RDR2 has more depth in it's mechanics than the game it replaces. If you take the time to learn how those components work, you'll have a much more enjoyable time in the game IMO/IME. btw, I appreciate the fact that you accept that you might be doing something wrong as some others would rather just blame the game than consider that it's within their control. They are heavy-handed in the way they approach the RDR2 game world when the game is now more about rewarding finesse and skill. ....the depth of this title is one major reason I really like it. I enjoy the challenge and it makes me feel that my input has more of an impact in-game vs. just a point, click and shoot experience. I get better as I progress through the story. ....my skills improve, my senses and intuition sharpen, I become more aware of clues and danger in the game world, etc. Some may prefer a simpler, cut & dry experience and I can understand that. .....but that's not what RDR2 is about and I'm all the more happy for it. I wish I could find a video showing you how to time your gallop. I will admit that it took a little practice for me to get it and even then I still don't time it right every time especially in situations of stress (e.g. being chased, shot at, etc.). .....but at worst, I've reached the point where my horse's stamina will drain very slowly.

Thank you for beeing one of the few people who are really trying to help here. So when I try to follow the stride of the horse what do I have to follow exactly? The horse is making so many noises. His stride in the front or in the back? Or both? Or something else? Can't really make a difference here. I really tried to follow the correct rythm but it doesn't work, after a few seconds it begins with the grunting. I don't like this bad feedback while riding and don't understand why they made it simulation-ish. I think the whole riding mechanic is kind of odd. For example when a gang begins to shoot you and you have to chill the f down and the horse is going crazy and the controlls aren't making this better. It's a pain in the ass to shoot from your horse back. Edited November 5, 2018 by Graham
Poggy
This: "I mean wtf? RDR should not be a dang simulation. That's not fun at all and more frustrating than everything else." And this: "Are you kidding me? I don't have to gallop at full speed all the time? What is this? Real life? Isn't this a game? Isn't this a free sandbox open world GAME like Rockstar says? Isn't this supposed to be fun? Do I really have to consider how I play?!" Indicate to me that this game is not going to be for you. Its a feature, not a bug. The game's stylistic intent was to have a fair chunk (medium accepting, of course) of 'realism', 'historicity' and 'simulationism'. It has been designed primarily with a slow-play, role-playing approach. There will be things like horse grunts, walking slow, eating and cleaning and shaving, and the such like that I expect will grate on you. Not every game is for every person, and I suspect this game design isn't for you. Sorry Either adapt your mentality and game style if you really want to play this game, or return the game. Or just use the cheat codes and have it only as a rag-doll joke game. Hope it works out for you.

Yeah I wait until the horse gets really low on stamina, and then I use a tonic full stamina, and that full bar will last for a bit, and I just keep spamming the run button for a while until the stamina actually activates, and then you have a full bar left to go on top of the times you sprinted while the stamina was loading up if that makes sense haha. But one thing I'm not sure about, when the stamina is blinking red, this is bad right? It shows the fast draining right? @Kean_1 I think you're supposed to time the button taps with the blinking. I might be wrong, but it seems to drain slower when you keep pace with that instead of trying to keep pace with your horse. I spent a lot of time trying to outrun bounty hunters last night... I think I mentioned it in another post but that's what some folks I read have done is try to time their button taps with the red blinks. Either way I can at least dramatically reduce my stamina drain. If the cores begin to reduce over time I'll stop and feed the horse and bring them back up. I never let them drop below half if I can help it and I simply stop sprinting when needed over long distances to avoid over fatiguing my horse. To be honest, I don't usually sustain a full gallop for long periods of a time anyway in case I run into trouble. I also slow down at times to avoid being surprised by ambushes, so I don't miss side events, etc.
