Red Dead Online is getting another beta update next Tuesday and it's packing a lot of content. With new game modes, weapons, customization items and emotes, this is the largest single content drop since Online launched last year. Rockstar has been teasing this for a while now, but finally we have some concrete details on what to expect.

The February 26 update will include 5 new modes. One for free roam, three for the Showdown Series and one for the Racing Series. The new free-roam mode is called Fool's Gold, which puts an interesting twist on the deathmatch formula. One player always wears a flashy and utterly impractical suit of golden armor, which increases their health.

By killing the armor bearer, it is possible to equip it. You gain points by making kills while wearing the armor. While you have it, your goal is to kill as many opponents as possible and survive as long as possible in order to retain the armor. If you're not wearing it, your goal is to kill the armor bearer and be the one to grab the armor.

The three new Showdown Series modes are Up In Smoke, Spoils Of War and Plunder. Rockstar hasn't revealed details about these particular modes yet, but did give hints - they involve CTF-like mechanics, looting other players and survival elements. We know more about the upcoming Racing Series mode however - Target Races will have you shooting targets from horseback while trying to be first across the finish line.

A new Competitive Challenge will also be added. Fishing Challenges will grant you rewards if you end up catching the greatest gross weight of fish among all participating players. By opting into the challenge you'll immediately receive all necessary equipment, and will be invincible for the time being, to prevent griefers from ruining your catch.

Gunsmiths and the catalogue will be updated with a pair of new weapons. The Evans Repeater and the Rare Shotgun will be available on the 26th of February however we don't yet know what stats these two guns pack. Joining these will be a large selection of new clothing items to further personalize your character with. Some items aren't permanent additions, so keep an eye out on these limited clothes. New emotes will also give you new ways to interact with other players you meet.

dlc4-800x450.jpg

Rockstar has also announced the next wave of content that is will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4 for a limited time. Xbox One players will have to wait to access the Jawbone Knife, which is a new melee weapon, Open Target Races, a variant of the Target Races mode that will be available to everyone, and 3 new emotes.

Keep in mind that the XP bonus is still live, and check back next week to get the full scoop on the upcoming update.

Not really impressed either. Fishing challenges and new items sound ok, all the other stuff is more of the same and all PVP related. Hopefully the anti griefing mechanics work out for people. I for one am hoping that at least improvements will be made to the bugs and several glitches will be addressed as well.

I just do not understand these software companies, a gazillion PVP games out there, let our fanbase not get the feeling we focus on PVE / MMO like content. Let's just alter the current game modes a bit and label it new content. On a positve note, perhaps I actually will like 1 of the new PVP modes and change my mind, although I sincerely doubt it.

TLDR : Minimal "deeper" content will be added, no word on day1 bug fixes, not getting my hopes up for this and the wait for the next real update will be too long.

Of course, we have to wait and see how the update actually turns out and all that it contains, but anti-methods (with some teeth) or private lobbies (or PvE servers!!) were what I hoped for. We'll see how everything really turns out next week

Well I've not really been online much but from the low down I think the griefing should be addressed a tad more than it already is.  Although from my experience it does seem to be folk who technically shouldn't be playing the game anyways, which is always frustrating.

I read that along with two new firearms there will be a new melee weapon? Anyone have details on what it will be? Apologies if I have missed the answer already.

I think this is what you may be talking about:

PS4 Early Access Content
In addition to new Target Races, PlayStation 4 players will have early access to Open Target Races where you compete in an open space to take out the most targets on horseback. PS4 players will also get early access to the Jawbone Knife, a unique melee weapon with a handle artfully carved from the remains of a slain animal’s jaw, as well as a range of new clothing options and 3 new Emotes.

What time do the patches usually hit? Is It set time across all serverss or midnight local time??? Curious what time hell is going to break lose.

They didn't specify a time from what I have seen.  Just the date (this Tuesday).  I usually just leave my PS4 on standby so it loads any patches / updates.  I have two that I'm waiting for that will hit tomorrow.  .....and then a beta this Friday.

Missing the repeater and the knife ?cant customise shogun wich is stupid imo. Already found several bugs and the clothes was a dissapointment. And with the new radar system the world feels really really empty but maybe thats a good thing i dunno. Sry to sound so negative, at least the train is back 😜👍🚴‍♂️

Yeah, I can't find that Evans repeater weapon or knife either. I just remembered to check with a fence. I'm going there next.

I'm not purchasing anything until I can see the update notes, just in case something there is mentioned that may be of importance.

The Jawbone Knife is at the fence in Rhodes for $105. I don't really do a lot of melee so I didn't purchase...yet. Still waiting to see the update notes.

As my issues with the game are only with griefing, I can't say I'm happy with what was delivered. As expected, your plans to visit the butcher or a specific hunting/fishing spot can't be plotted as easily as before because you don't know if anyone is around (from far away).

I do plan on making some purchases I was holding off on though.

RED DEAD ONLINE BETA UPDATE OUT NOW

Today, the Red Dead Online Beta gets its first big batch of updates including new gameplay, weapons and clothing, additional balancing and a slew of community-requested improvements thanks to responses to our player feedback page. The update is live in-game now - see below for details.

97c4a6ee9936e261f6deec3e4133c341d6b1f0b4

Earn Gold Nuggets and XP for completing Daily Challenges, a new series of wide-ranging objectives covering everything from skinning animals to finding treasure, winning feuds and more. Pull up the Player Menu to see your 7 Daily Challenges that will rotate each day, each challenge earns Gold Nuggets and XP and completing all 7 earns you a bonus.

Starting next week, compete with rival teams and Posses in the new Free Roam Event Fool’s Gold, where players fight to wear a protective suit of Golden Armor. Take down the current wearer to earn the armor and points, then turn the tables and rack up kills against the opposition.

And looking ahead, new game modes will arrive in the Red Dead Online Beta each week. Put your highwayman skills to the test with Target Races as you race other players on horseback to take down targets with speed and accuracy. Proficiency with a bow and arrow will give you an edge, take advantage of weapon and horse stamina pickups where you can, use your limited bullets wisely to remove targets or attack your competition.

Take on friends and rivals in new Fishing Challenges. Opt in to a challenge to receive the appropriate equipment and bait, head to the water’s edge and start reeling in the big ones. For added ease, use Eagle Eye to pick a spot full of fish. Remember, you’re trying to catch the highest total weight of fish to win – which could be achieved by hooking several smaller fish or angling for one large catch - so keep everything you reel in.

Also coming soon: three new Showdown Modes where players and teams compete to capture and deliver bags, steal loot from each other and survive. Stay tuned for more details around Up in Smoke, Spoils of War and Plunder. With the addition of these new modes also comes the Featured Series blip - visit the Featured Series sign post or select the option from the Quick Join menu to play the latest modes.

The Rare Shotgun is a beautifully engraved, faded brass version of the powerful, double-barreled longarm and is available today. Coming soon, be sure to get your hands on the Evans Repeater - a high grade, high capacity rifle that is devastating at medium and long range. Both weapons will be available via the Wheeler, Rawson & Co. Catalogue and from local Gunsmiths.

Treat yourself to a range of new Outfits, Boots, Coats, Gloves, Hats, Vests and more. In addition to all the clothing that will be available for purchase at your leisure, keep an eye on the shops and the Catalogue for Limited Time items that will come and go each week.

c40adf55a463ca8ef34d68004f00aaaabe8a5f91

Express yourself with a new set of emotes including new reactions, greets and taunts. Like all Emotes, you can tap once for the standard emote and double tap for a more exaggerated expression. You can find new Emotes in the Wheeler & Rawson Catalogue then add them to your Emote Wheel through the Emote Wheel Management menu.

Updated Player Radar and Visibility: We’ve reduced the visibility of players blips over longer distances, so now your location won’t display to other players unless you are nearby – minimizing the likelihood of being targeted across the map by more aggressive competitors. This includes limiting voice chat to near proximity rather than players from across the map. Overly aggressive players will be highlighted from the map with a progressively darkening dot. If your style of play becomes more hostile, your map position (including your Posse members) will become darker and visible from further away.

Easier Parley and Feuds: Turn quarrels with other players into timed mini-deathmatches with easier to trigger Feuds, which can be initiated against a rival and their Posse after one kill. Alternately, instigate a temporary truce quicker after one kill with similar updates to the Parley system.

Enhanced Law and Bounty System: If you stir up enough trouble to earn a high bounty, you’ll increase the chance that a cadre of NPC Bounty Hunters will be out to get you. The higher the bounty gets, the more persistent your pursuers will become… so watch out!

Please keep the feedback coming as these new features arrive each week. In addition to new content, stay tuned for new weekly bonuses such as this week’s care package to help you tackle Daily Challenges and your other ongoing adventures across the five states. Head into the Red Dead Online Beta any time before Tuesday March 5th to receive a complimentary delivery of goods at your Camp’s Lockbox or at the Post Office consisting of:

  • 2x Potent Snake Oil
  • 2x Potent Bitters
  • 2x Potent Miracle Tonic
  • 2x Horse Reviver
  • 2x Potent Horse Stimulant
  • 8x Poison Arrows
  • 10x Explosive Slug

Starting today, PlayStation 4 players will have early access to the Jawbone Knife, a unique melee weapon with a handle artfully carved from the remains of a slain animal’s jaw, as well as a range of new clothing options and three new emotes. In the coming weeks, PlayStation 4 players will get the Special Series that launches them directly into the latest early access mode starting with Open Target Races where you compete in an open space to take out the most targets on horseback.

Stay tuned each week for new content, bonuses, limited time clothing and more coming in and out of the Red Dead Online Beta and keep an eye out for more updates as we continue improving and growing the world of Red Dead Online.

Why the **** does PS get more in terms of updates?     Bunch of bullsh*t right there.

It's part of the Early Access exclusivity they had.  It's just a few items either way.

On top of that.  The blip changes don't effect the map on the app.

Let's hope the griefers don't have the app, or it's going to be a long evening.

I would suggest folks submit trouble tickets ASAP to make R* aware of this issue.  This is obviously a big flaw in this new system of theirs.

Was a big improvement online just now, went to three different towns without any hassle...although someone on their mic said they could still see where other players were 🙄 Not sure how they could do it when I couldn't see anyone until I was almost next to them.

I just did a quick check and as HuDawg mentioned, the app still allows players to see everyone on the map.  I would suggest submitting a trouble ticket thru R*.  I'm doing that now and I'm having my complaint escalated.

They need to either suspend the app for now or get a fix in place ASAP.  It's fine for me since I have the app but not everyone does or is able to due to compatibility issues with OS version, etc.

I just gagged on my coffee.  "Over 300 new clothing items"?  That seems... excessive, even factoring in that the number is far less in reality since they must be counting different color permutations of the same article (i.e. a hat that has six different color configurations counts as "six new items" instead of "one").  Assuming that the average number of color variants for a single article of clothing is what, five or six items?  That's still 50-60 new articles of clothing.

Edit: I can't wait to dress my character like Colonel Sanders.
