lumper
Do you think it was designed to be that way from the start or they just ran out of time and resources so decided to bail on it all together? I am talking about our online characters. I dont mean they would have much dialogue but I would expect at least the basics greetings, insults, standard thank yous, excuse me, etc.. yes and no, loll It just seems like they ran out of time to me. I feel like given enough time and resources that they migth have added some dialogue for us to rely on, similar to the single player side of things. I dunno, just my thought on it Edited March 27, 2019 by lumper
Kean_1
We had a voice in the campaign because we were playing the role of Arthur. In RDO, you're playing the role of yourself so there is no scripted dialogue on your behalf. It's definitely a design decision and R* isn't the only one to choose this route. In fact, a recent example is the Division 2. As I recall this was actually addressed in an interview during development and the decision had something to do with what I mentioned.
D3x
The online end is meant to be played on a mic so you are speaking on behalf of your character in a way. I would love to see the mouths move when you are talking on a mic though.

danjou
i speak for my character. my neighbours hear me shouting.....Goddamn these casual aimers....all the time.
CosmoKramer
They made a joke of this in GTAO - Trevor would make comments about your character's lack of speech when you completed missions for him.

I understand that I just meant they could have had a generic "yes" or "no" or "excuse me" etc.. just the very basics, but what was said about using rhe mic, kind of makes sense but not really. I mean in missions, a character asks you a question, my guy can only nod, cant say a word, regardless of the mic, so I just think, for those situations, it would be nice to have our guy/gal be able to say, Sure, or no thanks, or excuse me, etc.. Born Homicidal
The no voice is really dumb imo, at least give us a preset voice we can choose, nothing is worse than seeing your character being spoken to and then looking like a complete idiot not being able to speak lmao.. some say it adds immersion considering you can fill in the blanks and fill in what your character says but the game takes into consideration that you're a buffoon and aren't responding. its so damn lame. Madrigalian
My character is very embarrassed about her speech impediment. Just talking to her can send her into a blind rage. Just yesterday, she's riding out from Valentine when a passing stranger complimented her on her horse. Since she couldn't say, "Thank you", she shot the man in the head with her sawed off shotgun. This made her feel better and less self conscious about being born a mute. True story.
Ratly
We actually got more of a voice then what you get in gtao. I'm quite surprised we didn't get simple greetings considering we got grunts and groans as well as hyah sounds when we ride a horse.

Yes, exactly this is what Im saying. as I pass even npc's on the road it would be nice to say hello there, nice horse, lol whatever, something, and yeah man in those missions it kills me the guy isnt programmed to say anything, I mean they know he is saying yes or no, and usually yes. It makes me think, as detailed as this game it, they just ran out of time and some things had to ship as is, and I think this is one of those things. It would have taken a lot of effort and time, then again, someone spent that time programming stuff so we can buy Cripps and outfit, that person might have had their time better served working on character responses. And that brings me to my other thought These are the type of questions I would love to be able to ask developers, I think it would be great, if they would dedicate one person to social media for just this purpose. Once a month either release a video statement of hey this is what we are working on and also we have recieved many questions from users so we are going to run through some of those and try to answer them on this video. Especially a game like this with so many things going on, updates coming, the whole beta thing, plus the sp stuff, etc.. I just think once a month have that or even better have a video Q&A once a month on their youtube channel so people can join and ask away, some feedback from R* as we progress would be great and would also show us they are listening and working on stuff, and maybe they have a reason that we never considered and by explaining it to us we would all have a better understanding of what they are up and hope to achieve. I know its a lofty request, lol but this game has changed the genre, and many aspects of it, so why not change everything and give us an ear, so we can interact with the developers a little more and they can share with us and we can share with them as we do with feedback. Personally I think it woudl go a logn way calming folks down over waiting for updates, and when the Beta will end and the actual release will begin

Given GTAO was exactly the same I'm sure it was a conscious decision not to have any character dialogue from the outset in RDO. If they had put it in there would just be endless complaints of lack of variety to the responses or phraseology or differentiation/customisation for the accent. It's a can of worms I can well imagine they just wanted to keep closed.

I never played any GTA games so I wasnt aware of their past. I still think on some level that sure since they did it that way in GTA something that was their first inclination here, but I also think this game is leaps and bounds beyond anything that came before and it is ok to expect the unexpected. But I concede you are most likely 100% correct.

Your character is you in the game and as @Renascent mentioned, your mouth even moves as you speak in this game (when using in-game chat). ......it's not some oversight, lack of resources, etc. It is a design choice. If I could find that R* interview where this was brought up, I would provide a link to it.

I danced in a saloon for about 15 minutes before some guy blew my head off with his sawnoffs... seriously though, it’s an online game with built in voice functionality. I hate how 95% or more don’t use it. Even when you try to initiate dialogue. It’s a personal gripe of mine when it comes to the other players... hell, even having my head taken off with a double barrel for no apparent reason would be easier to handle if the shooter followed up with ‘sorry. Daily challenge’ Edited April 2, 2019 by The_Liquor

Daily challenge’ It's the kind of stuff that looks great on paper but falls flat on execution. Most players out there playing online games either don't have mics or refuse to use them. .....and those that do either abuse it or would rather not deal with those people so they mute or use party chat. I can't tell you how long it's been since I actually heard someone else talk in RDO when playing Free Roam alone. I've checked my settings several times just to be sure. Renascent
90% of the time I heard anyone in free roam was their crappy music playing over their mic, little kids crying, or bunch of middle aged men cussing each other out. It was rare that I would speak and actually get a response back other than being shot at or made fun of/cussed at because I sound like a little boy (I'm a woman).

Man, we should add each other then because the only reason I play with my headset muted is the fact that I sound like a prepubescent boy even though I am in fact a nearly 30 year old woman hahaha
The_Liquor
90% of the time all I hear is complete silence... birds chirping, horse hooves, wind blowing... another player standing there with all the conversion skill of a statue... I’ve now made it a personal policy that if I’m doing something another player can mess with, and they don’t reply to my verbal communication, I kill them. I’m tired of statues coming to life and shooting me in the back of the head when I guess wrong. I’ll tell them why i killed them as I ride on too... could have been avoided if you just opened your mouth and spoke your intentions.
