funny story about looting bodies online

Recommended Posts

So last night a guy invited me to his temp posse and we ended up clearing an enemy hideout at that ranch in big valley.  Once we finished, he turned into a complete maniac racing into the house to get the jewelry and then loot all the bodies.  If I even turned in the direction of a dead body, he'd practically run me over to get there first.  I have no doubt he would have shot me dead if he could have.  Anyway, I had no interest in the bodies.  I just stood there watching him while I shot the ravens picking at the dead, then collected some nearby herbs while he finished his work.  Also grabbed a lump of cheese for good measure ($1.90 in a store iirc).  I sold the bird meat and feathers to the butcher and the herbs to the doctor and I'm quite sure I got the bigger take without all the hassle.  My only regret was that I didn't grab a bread roll to go with the cheese.

There's just no profit in looting bodies online as far as I can tell.  In my admittedly limited experience, if you're lucky the bodies usually have something like 93 cents and maybe an opened health cure, if you're real lucky maybe a stick of dynamite.  The jewelry is typically a necklace or bracelet that you can fence for a couple dollars each.  It's not like single player where a belt buckle will bring you $10 and jewelry comes in bags of $25 to $50.

So that's my standard practice now.  If I get ambushed and there are dead bodies all over the place, I just sit back leisurely killing the scavenger birds and hoping I get lucky and a squirrel runs by.  (That said, sometimes I do loot bodies just because I like the visual and the sound of the dead body thumping against the ground.)

Am I wrong about this?  Has anybody gotten a worthwhile amount of money or valuable object looting a dead body online?  I suppose it makes sense that the Skinner Brothers aren't riding around with torches and pockets full of cash.

Yeah most of the time you will spend more in ammo than you get back. So the ROI is pretty slim

I have gotten a few $'s on these new missions...escort ambush, etc., $4 if you are with someone else $8 if Solo

Occasionally they throw you a treasure map. (Ok more like rarely)

It's mostly XP but I think if you make sure to clear every dead body it's usually the last one who gives up the map

The one thing you are forgetting is treasure maps, there is a rumor that an algorithm exists that is every 30 bodies will generate a treasure map as long as none de-spawn, so if you are strategic and clear the hideout in a way that all the bodies are closer together so none de-spawn you can pick up maps pretty regularly, a guy made a video on it recently, I cant confirm it although the day before yesterday I got two treasure maps from looting bodies, so... ya never know.

Like Lumper said above - Treasure maps.

When i started playing i had terrible luck with the maps but now it changed. After the last update i noticed a big increase in items from looting. There are a lot more jewelery, potions and treasure maps. 2 days ago i even got a map from a body i looted while doing stranger mission (one from Flacko when You have to bust out his friend from prison wagon) and that never happened to me before.

Other thing is the achievement - 1000 looted corpses, Its a slow one but still more exp. Im currently doing it 3rd time.

I usually do hideouts solo - when i see im too late and someone else started to clean them i just leave  and let them do it. Sometimes when im clearing one and some1 joins me after we clear i tend to leave half of the corpses closer to him for him to loot them in peace.

thanks to you and others who mentioned this.  In all the times i’ve looted bodies online i never came across a treasure map so it never crossed my mind.  Anyway, I hope he got one, because if anyone deserves it, this corpse-looting madman is the guy.

I think its worth it. Every little bit adds up. As you mentioned you can get dynamite, moonshine, jewelry, I've gotten treasure maps more than once, ammo, herbs.... Sounds worth it to me. Not to mention there is a buckle to reset for xp along the way and gold...

I tend to ignore the jewelry odds and ends, so I often forget I got all that junk in my satchel. But then when I hit the fence every now and then I get a nice surprise of bonus cash

Hmm, not sure about that theory unless it came with the Spring update as I've ballsed up hideouts before, dying so most bodies despawn and yet still ended up looting a treasure map. Would be surprised if its anything more than just a random generator.

Yeah I was going to add it's most likely not every 30 perfect corpse collected, it's random or based on some other trigger.  I've gotten back to back maps

Here is my funny story about people going nuts looting bodies for couple of pennies...

late last night I was looking for an escort mission that actually counted towards daily challenge and found travelers under attack.  I'm killing all the enemies and some player  shows up and kills one and proceeds to start looting the bodies like a maniac while I'm doing all the work.

He then executed the travelers....

My response was to give him what he deserved ...a participation trophy.   Wish he came back for seconds.  Ran to the hills

i have got atleast 25 treasure maps from gang hideout / strangers / ambush from non-players ennemy so i guess 25  at minimum 50$ each i already win

Then you're the luckiest player in the entire game by miles with the 2nd place luckiest gamer being miles behind you.

Plenty of people playing since beta including myself have never once got a treasure map from looting bodies. So the overall consensus of looting bodies is its a huge waste of time but hey we still try just in case. I need some of your luck lol

Dude, this exact thing happened to me last night too, a guy showed when I had 3 bodies left to kill, he sh*t one, then proceeded to rush loot all my bodies, I told him in my mic, not cool bro, this is my hideout, you got here when I was done, I would never show up and do that to you so I dont appreicate it, but obviously he ignored me and just tried to loot all he could then ran off to his buddy.

I think they saw the smoke, rushed over there and then realized I had been there already and was nearly done, his ego and attitude wouldnt let him realiae the ovious truth, someone else already got here, so he just couldnt help himself, lol.

Let me tell you, I have rushed like the wind many times and got there to find otherts clearing it, once I got there and could have started it but I noticed to guys also showed up, so in all those cases, I thought, meh, there are no shortage of these, Im gonna let them have it, no issues, and I just turned and left, im not going to act like a crack head picking up crumbs in a carpet over 20 bodies, lol Ill just get the next one.

But I thought of this post and then read your reply in particular and thought, oh that is funny, I wonder if it was the same guy?

I have no idea and I havent been able to confirm it, BUT a guy on reddit then later youtube made a video, and a post explainaing he tested this over many clearings and he swears if you dont have any bodies respawn, then every 30., if any body even one body re spawns, it resets.

But again, who knows.

It must be a thing because i had same experience last night.  I was clearing out a hideout and had just about finished up when out of the corner of my eye I see a player ride up and a message pops up saying so and so killed the leader and he’s out there looting all the bodies.  I figured some people see smoke, ride over and watch you do the dirty work, the jump in to gather the spoils.

I think your on Xbox, I'm on PS4 so probably different guy, same crackhead/juvenile mentality though.

I usually do same if someone else is their I just leave, if someone helps I'll split evenly especially if I see their a lower level guy.

It's not hard to earn money in this game, 5 seconds later I bagged 2 bucks and logged off, didn't even care about the skins. (Never found an escort mission that registered for the daily challenge though, that is where the gold is) Just meat and the horns is days upkeep and just about the $4 you make, b4 loot.

I know it's just a game but not sharing and killing the travelers(who you can't loot) ...I just don't get it.

I just think peeps want to jump in and try to steal the loot scraps without helping, they deserve to be shot.  I don't care about the bounty or if they press charges.

This is a whole nother subject but game needs more co-op missions.

Oh you just reminded me of another one, check this out.

I get a mission from Shaky the dude in New Austin.

So it is an assassination thing but killing npc's, so I rush to get there and as I show up, two guys are there, and they have killed all my guys, lol I get the mission over screen, and I get paid, but not very much as it was done really super fast, but these guys ran into my mission and did it!!

And one other I just remembered.

I was hunting through Cholla Springs, and I see in eagle eye, these long paths, and they stayed there but there were three of them, and really long.

It looked like the ones when you get a mission to do a hunt, and then I see what I think is a vulture so I shoot it , and a guy pops up our of the bushes, it was a dead npc killed by the cougar, and another player must have just got the mission to come hunt it but I showed up first, and so I noticed the clue, got up and was standing there, I see the guy riding up fast, so I just left to see if he was able to maybe still get it to work for him, lol.

so yeah those are my "crazy players" stories from yesterday and today.

Personally... if someone shows up at my hideout and starts looting bodies without helping or backing off (or responding at all) when I talk on the mic, they get shot. If they come back, they get shot again... However, if someone shows up and helps me clear it, I let them loot with me...

I have noticed the enemies for missions showing up. Sometimes they just spawn close to another player I think. See red and go check it out, shoot the place up, by the time you get there the job is done.

Being able to say, "I looked a dead body" is a FANTASTIC icebreaker at a party.  If people shun you, they're squares.  If they gravitate towards you, they're your kind of people, and usually know the best places to ditch said current party for a real party.

False.  It generates an APB.

I don't bother looting the bodies either, even if you got them all it's like 4 bucks. I spend my time after a shootout picking up and dropping the dead bodies into the campfire. It sends a message (not quite sure what that message is) and makes the area smell lovely. I suggest you try it.

Well today I looted all the bodies and found 2 treasure maps, yesterday I was clearing an ambush campsite thing, and a guy showed up and helped me, I said hey man, go on and loot some bodies you earned it, and he rode off, the very next body gave me a map!!

Woot!! love it!1

I encourage you not to loot them, more for me, by the way it paid me 1.66 gold!! so yeah it was pretty sweet.

This was my calling card in story mode and when I started playing online. Or tossing them to the bottom of a nearby ravine. 😂

Speaking of funny stories, I had some nutcase challenge me over a pronghorn kill the other day - you read that right, a fecking pronghorn! How many are there of these bloody things in the game?? Anyway, after realising I was in defensive mode and he couldn't auto-target me he decided to throw a fire bottle at me. His plan backfired however and next thing I knew his horse was bolting with his flaming body on its back. Karma exists in red dead online!

I had a guy pick a fight over an elk I shot... I lost, but the whole encounter made me laugh.

I loot everybody I can, whether they are from an ambush, a stranger encounter or hideout, like, if I save a stranger for her sister then have to ride her home, and on the way more bandits appear and attack, ill kill them, stop and loot them on the way, usually 2 more come, and I repeat, there is no time limit on those so as many bodies as they will send Ill loot.
I dont run straight to the pawn guy so by the time I do I actually have quite a few items to sell, and often I find maps.

Ive noticed depending on where and how you clear a hideout can really help the bodies not de-spawn and since Ive been paying attention to this I have been getting more maps.

I wonder if it is any different from xbox to ps4? I doubt it, but I wonder.

I always loot.  Not a hog while in a group, mind you.   But I do loot everything I can.  The rings and necklaces add up.  Dynamite drops are fairly common now. I have received more than a few maps.  And while the nickles and dimes aren't all that impressive, I have reset the loot progression badge at least a couple of times now for additional bonuses.

What I find frustrating (sometimes) is in the cooperative missions, when you kill all the baddies and then someone immediately runs up to the next mission story trigger and stops everyone from looting before the next cut scene and mission step.  It's like, couldn't you have waited 5 minutes for everyone to loot before you pressed "go" again?  Besides, the longer we take the better xp we will receive in the end anyway.  /sigh

Anyway, not saying it's worth it.  But close enough for me to keep doing it.  lol

  • 7 months later...

A first happened to me a couple of weeks ago, I was riding along and an NPC smarted off to me so I pulled him off of his horse and beat him to death, stomped him some more for good measure, blew his head, arms, and legs off of his body, then when I looted him I got a small bounty on me for looting. That had never happened to me before.
