No chat?

I feel somewhat lonely without chat going on 'in the background'. I don't care for voice chat for several reasons and I am no where near ready to group up. I just learned last night how to feed my horse lol.

Will there ever be the option of typed chat in online?

Maybe on pc... but I only know console and that would be a huge pain... also, the voice chat is proximity based On console, so I’d imagine if PC did add text chat it would be much the same. If nobody is nearby, you don’t ‘hear’ anybody.

On console that would be at the very least difficult and a pain.

I am on pc version with keyboard and mouse. That is really the only thing I am disliking. No chat /communication. I turned on voice but no one ever says anything. Not even as they try to kill me.

I find that outside of a posse there is no chat in this game.  If I'm posse'd up with people I have met then it's chatty but otherwise I just lose myself in the sound of the wildlife.  And Cripps chuntering on about that time he robbed a bank!

Well, if people don't say anything and/or have you muted, I wouldn't expect that they would be open to chatting with you either.   .....but who knows.

I have had an open mic on in Free Roam and it appears some will still have this selected but simply don't speak as they were able to acknowledge my commands, etc.  

To be honest, I can't see taking my hands away from the controls to type a response to some random I'm trying to interact with.  My suggestion is to use the mic still and if they fail to acknowledge you with a response, emote or through their actions, they probably don't want to be bothered anyhow.

For me, I have voice chat disabled in game and only use the PS4s party chat feature to talk with friends. After all this time, I rarely found myself even the slightest bit interested in what randoms had to say which was mostly insults, rude noises (e.g.eating, background music, belching, etc.) or useless banter.

I would use R*s Feedback site to suggest it to them though as text chat is something PC folks use way more often than console. I'll wager it's a popular request.

totally agree with you , i was stunned when i bought that game with an online feature , but no way to chat with people other than doing emote , or micro , my problem is english is my third language , so when i speak it with my accent i either get insulted with a learn english or not understood.  just for asking help on a zone chat clan/posse chat / looking for groups etc , would make all phase relied together more people , more occasion to organise huge free roam freestyle event , lot of opportunity miss.

They just did a straight console port and left it at that didn't they.

I wouldn't mind it either. Not that I'd use it a lot, but it would be nice to occasionally be able to type "sorry" when you crash into another player or "thanks" when they revive your horse, rather than having to choose between waving and nodding, and then accidentally selecting Spit or pulling out a weapon, because the emote controls aren't exactly the most intuitive.
