Western Films

One of my favorites not listed is Preacher.

I love watching John Wayne westerns, even though i've seen them all a few hundred thousand times give or take.  My favorites of his -

  • Big Jake
  • The Cowboys
  • El Dorado
  • Rio Bravo
  • True Grit
  • Rio Lobo
  • McLintock
  • The War Wagon
  • Chisum

Then you have the Clint Eastwood westerns.  Like John Wayne's i like almost all of Clints, but here's my favorites -

  • The spaghetti western trilogy (Fist full of dollars, A few dollars more,  and The good, the bad, the ugly)
  • Two Mules for Sister Sara
  • Hang em High
  • High Plains Drifter
  • Pale Rider

Oddly enough, although i like all of his other westerns, i did not care for Unforgiven.  To this day, and i've tried numerous times, i've never been able to watch the whole movie.  I always fall asleep, or get bored and turn it off, it just doesn't capture me like his others.

Numerous Japanese Samurai movies scratch the itch, and a few are actually retellings of American westerns.

The Seven Samurai comes to mind, and predates The Magnificent Seven, which is my personal favorite.  I also based my SASS persona on Yul Brynner's character, but it's not easy wearing all that black in the summer!

What film would be best to introduce someone to western films? My friend's little brother is getting interested in RDR2 but knows next to nothing about the old west. We want him to watch some films first. He is 15.

The Cowboys would be perfect.  if you haven't seen it, it's a John Wayne film from the early 70s, so it's good for kids to watch for those parents that restrict tv/movies.  It's even about kids.  John Wayne takes the kids on a cattle drive.  There's a fight with a guy trying to steal the cattle, John Wayne get's shot and eventually dies, so the kids finish the cattle drive and avenge his death.

It's one of my all time favorites :)

A more recent film to watch would be Tombstone, another one of my favorites.
