Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, a game dev interviewer with a track record of Rockstar Games scoops, recently posted on X that he is sure ta next-gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2 exists. The only problem? Rockstar has full control over any official information about it, including when it’s coming out.
The tweet was sent in response to a question posed by a follower on a post detailing the “end” of his trip to India, where, among other things, the video game insider got a free dinner after the announcement of a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Grand Theft Auto 6 didn’t materialize.
RDR2 came out in 2018 and is still one of the best-looking games ever made, but it has never gotten a proper current-gen upgrade for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. That means no native 60 fps mode, no 4K patch, none of the enhancements that Grand Theft Auto V, and even Red Dead Redemption, got when they jumped to new hardware.
Fans have wanted one for years, and multiple credible sources have claimed one is in the works for nearly as long.
| Source / Time | The Claim |
|---|---|
| Insiders, late 2025 | An enhanced RDR2 version is in development |
| Reports, early 2026 | A possible 2026 window, with 60 fps and 4K |
| Kiwi Talkz, earlier 2026 | Multiple devs confirmed it exists; timing controlled higher up |
| Kiwi Talkz, June 29 2026 | It exists “for a fact,” but India devs do not set the date |
| Rockstar, throughout | No official announcement, trailer, or store listing |
Nobody, including the insiders, can tell you when it launches, because only Rockstar knows when it’s happening, which makes sense.
From a broader perspective, it isn’t unusual for developers to finish working on something for months and then have it sit on a shelf for months or longer while executives pick a release window based on business priorities. Rockstar is notorious for this, with multiple canceled projects over the years, including a potential “mystery” that fans uncovered earlier this year.
With that said, the reason for the “delay” here is obviously the next Grand Theft Auto. With the biggest game in history launching on November 19, Rockstar has every incentive to keep its full attention and marketing focused on it. Dropping an RDR2 upgrade in the middle of GTA 6 season would split focus and bury the re-release under the launch. It would make more sense to hold an RDR2 upgrade for a quieter moment, perhaps well after GTA 6 is out, when it can get its own spotlight.
Still, the news is genuinely positive. If the upgrade exists, then the long-term odds of eventually getting it are good. It is a question of when Rockstar chooses to release it, not whether it’s in development.

For a game as beloved and commercially successful as RDR2, even among former leadership, this is reassuring news, even if the wait is incredibly frustrating.
For now, keep your expectations patient. Watch Rockstar’s official channels and earnings calls. Until we get a confirmation, RDR2 next-gen is an incredibly strong rumor with good sourcing.
In the meantime, you can play RDR2 for free via PS Plus, in case you haven’t bought into the hype just yet.
