Insider Insists Long-Awaited Red Dead Redemption 2 Update Is Real

Remember when we said that a recent Steam update hinted that Rockstar Games might be close to announcing its next-gen remaster or update for Red Dead Redemption 2? Apparently, one of the most credible industry insiders also believes this is the case.

In a very public conversation on X, @videotechuk asked @NateTheHate2 about the re-release of Red Dead Redemption 2, and his answer was very clear: these versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 exist.

For those who’ve been playing Arthur Morgan’s epic western on last-gen consoles, the limitations have been frustrating. The PS4 version runs at a locked 30 frames per second, while Xbox players have dealt with resolution compromises. Meanwhile, PC players have been enjoying the game at 60fps and beyond with all the graphical bells and whistles since 2019.

This isn’t to say that PC gamers have it all. It wouldn’t hurt to get similar enhancements to Red Dead Redemption 2 to what Rockstar did with Grand Theft Auto V with the release of Grand Theft Auto V: Expanded and Enhanced and, later on, Grand Theft Auto V: Enhanced.

With Grand Theft Auto 6 pushed back to May 2026, Rockstar has a massive gap in their release schedule that needs filling, and as we’ve already mentioned previously, they’ve been remarkably consistent about releasing something every year since 2021, which previously included a modern re-release of Red Dead Redemption on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 with PlayStation 5 enhancements.

What makes this situation particularly intriguing is how Rockstar has been handling these releases. Remember when Red Dead Redemption dropped on PS4 and Switch? They announced it on August 7, 2023, and it was in players’ hands just 10 days later.

Besides, Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, has been strategically spacing out its major releases throughout the year. With NBA 2K26, Mafia: The Old Country, and Borderlands 4 already occupying the earlier quarters, a late-year Red Dead Redemption 2 release makes perfect business sense.

For players who’ve held off on experiencing Red Dead Redemption 2, this could be the perfect entry point. And for those who played it at launch on PS4 or Xbox One, the prospect of revisiting the Van der Linde gang’s story with modern console features is undeniably appealing.

The elephant in the room, of course, is when these versions will actually arrive. While sources confirm their existence, nobody seems willing to commit to a release date. But given Rockstar’s pattern, the approaching holiday season, and the fact that the game is one of the best-selling video games of all time, smart money says we could see an announcement any day now, perhaps even in time for the game’s anniversary on October 26.

Until then, console players continue to wait, knowing that somewhere in Rockstar’s offices, a version of Red Dead Redemption 2 that takes full advantage of their hardware is just waiting.
