Red Dead Redemption gets official 4K and 60FPS support on the PlayStation 5

It's amazing how Red Dead Redemption holds up on the PlayStation 5 when you're running it at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.

Red Dead Redemption fans responded with yee-haws and hollers when Rockstar Games finally confirmed the release of Red Dead Redemption on the PlayStation 5 and even the Nintendo Switch.

The re-release of the OG western open-world title after 13 years was met with a healthy mix of welcoming arms with a hint of doubt and criticism, but mostly the former.

Now, ahead of its physical release, Rockstar is giving cowboys even more of a reason to give a whoop.

A remake of Red Dead Redemption probably isn’t worth it when Rockstar could spend its time and money on a new entry instead.

As part of the latest update for Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar has quietly added the option to run the game at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.

There’s been high demand for Red Dead Redemption at 4K and 60 FPs for years. The calls only grew louder when Xbox’s then-new push to make older Xbox 360 games playable at better frame rates and resolutions on the Xbox One and, eventually, the Xbox Series S/X, saw titles from the late 2000s and early 2010s run at a true native 4K. It took Rockstar many years to listen, but now that it’s finally here, fans can’t get enough.

Of course, re-releasing an older title for nearly the same price as a new title was always going to ruffle feathers. Yet, Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick, remained firm in his decision, defending the price point of the re-release of Red Dead Redemption by describing it as a “commercially accurate price.”

Rockstar is leaving plenty of money on the table by now re-releasing Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.

If we’re being honest, Zelnick is in the right. For $50, Rockstar gave the original Red Dead Redemption a major revamp in textures and models with huge updates to the renderer, added a Ray Tracing mode, DualSense support, and now, 4K60 with HDR.

Besides, with the addition of the Undead Nightmare DLC, which brings roughly six hours or so of additional gameplay, $50 is a fair price.

With the latest update, Rockstar might have just guaranteed that Red Dead Redemption will continue selling well on the PS4/PS5 and the Nintendo Switch when the physical version hits the store shelves on October 13.

Despite the criticism, Rockstar put a lot of work to make Red Dead Redemption look as good even on the Nintendo Switch.

Now, if only Rockstar could confirm a similar upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2 next.

The Red Dead Redemption franchise is currently on hiatus as Rockstar Games focuses its efforts towards the next GTA game. A third Red Dead Redemption has effectively been confirmed but it’s unclear when it will come out or if work on it has already begun.
