When Rockstar Games announced that the beloved western classic Red Dead Redemption would receive a comprehensive remaster for modern platforms, long-time fans who owned the original Xbox 360 version had reason to celebrate.
Unfortunately, for many Xbox players, that promise has turned into a frustrating waiting game that stretches on with no clear resolution in sight.
Although Xbox fans were the first to enjoy an upgraded version of Red Dead Redemption via the “Xbox One Enhanced” initiative, the latest update to the 2010 classic is a much better upgrade. It adds 60FPS gameplay, 4K resolution support, high dynamic range visuals, and various quality-of-life improvements that make the experience more enjoyable on current hardware.
Rockstar had initially announced that owners of the digital Xbox 360 version would receive a free upgrade to the Xbox Series version. However, the reality of claiming this free upgrade has proven far more complicated. Almost immediately after launch, reports began flooding social media, forums, and Reddit from Xbox players unable to access their promised free upgrade. When these affected users attempted to download the remastered version via the Microsoft Store, they encountered error messages, payment requests, or were unable to find any option to claim their entitlement.
Rockstar Games acknowledged the problem relatively quickly, confirming through official channels that they were aware some users were experiencing issues redeeming their free upgrade on Xbox. The company stated they were actively working on a fix and asked for patience from the community.

The random nature of who could and couldn’t access the upgrade created additional confusion. If absolutely nobody had been able to claim the free version, identifying and fixing the root cause would likely have been more straightforward. When some players succeed while others fail under seemingly identical circumstances, diagnosing the technical problem becomes exponentially more difficult. Is it related to specific account configurations? Regional differences? Purchase dates? You wouldn’t want to be Rockstar trying to figure out what’s wrong with the free promotion right now.
The situation creates an unfortunate contrast with how the upgrade process has worked on other platforms. PlayStation users who owned the PS4 version could claim their free PS5 upgrade through a straightforward process on the PlayStation Store. Nintendo Switch owners could download an upgrade pack to enhance their original Switch version for Switch 2.
Rockstar and Microsoft are presumably working to resolve the issue, but no firm timeline exists for when affected users can expect a resolution. The only timeline we have is the “five days” that Rockstar is reportedly asking from this Reddit user. Beyond that, we know nothing else about this issue.
In the meantime, John Marston’s redemption story will have to wait a little longer for many of the Xbox fans who have already paid to experience it.
