Rockstar Games just gave Red Dead Redemption fans some good news – select players can enjoy the first game of the critically acclaimed franchise for “free”.
This latest initiative is part of Rockstar’s expansion of its GTA+ subscription service. As part of its latest update, Red Dead Redemption and the Undead Nightmare expansion becomes the first non-GTA game included in the service.
For just $5.99 a month, GTA+ subscribers can now explore beyond the realms of Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City, and go into the rugged landscapes of Rockstar’s rendition of the American frontier.
Red Dead Redemption remains a pivotal part of Rockstar’s portfolio. In total, the series has sold more than 61 million copies. Adding Red Dead Redemption for GTA+ subscribers on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X at no additional cost is a treat for those who have yet to embark on this epic journey through the wild west.
The best-case scenario is those who get a taste of Red Dead Redemption will buy the sequel, which remains one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time.
Unfortunately, this move isn’t without limitations. As previously mentioned, this offer is exclusive to console players with an active GTA+ subscription, leaving PC gamers out in the cold again. Additionally, despite the improvements and a 60FPS toggle option that was introduced to PS5 players through backward compatibility following last year’s re-release, these enhancements are absent for Xbox players.
Despite the platform-specific disparities, making Red Dead Redemption and its expansion available via GTA+ presents an invaluable opportunity for fans to revisit or discover for the first time the origin of the series.
As Rockstar continues to focus on the development of GTA 6, with a tentative release date set for 2025, updates to Red Dead Redemption 2 and the inclusion of the original game in GTA+ suggest that the developer remains committed to supporting its existing titles despite essentially putting Red Dead Online to pasture last year.
