Wildlife

Wildlife

Over 200 species of animals, birds, and fish populate the Red Dead Redemption 2 world. All of them behave and respond to their environment in their own unique way.

Among the species that appear in the game are bison, pronghorn, deer, horses, scavengers, wolves, possums, Bears, Coyotes, and rodents.

Wildlife is extremely unpredictable, and players will have to deal with a lot of variables, especially while hunting. Animals engage with each other all the time dynamically, with these engagements being powered by the game’s AI. As these events are not scripted at all, players should expect to experience them at any given time.

Horses

Various breeds of horses, over 19, can be found in Red Dead Redemption 2. Among them are Appaloosas, Arabians, Shires, and Mustangs. Horses all behave and handle differently depending on the breed. They can be purchased from stables, captured in the wilderness and even stolen.

Horses biological reactions to the environment are realistic, with testicles shrinking and expanding depending on the temperature. All horses also come with their own health and stamina, which can be replenished by feeding them.

Traits like stamina, performance and handling, and the bond with the rider are all enhanced by grooming. By increasing the bond level, it’s possible to unlock additional abilities like rearing up while in the saddle, drifting and more. Customization possibilities are ample, with different coat styles as well as saddles, blankets, and stirrups which can be bought with cash or Gold.

Arthur can increase his level of bonding with his mount, which will increase the courage of the Horse. That makes it less likely to throw Arthur off during a battle. Horses also act as an extension of the character’s inventory, allowing you to carry more weapons and supplies around the world than on foot. Additionally, some animal carcasses can only be transported on horseback.

Game

The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is filled with wildlife. Some only serve to increase immersion and cannot be interacted with, such as certain insects, lizards and small rodents, while the majority of animals encountered can be hunted.

Various animal species all have different properties with regards to spawning rate, spawn locations, aggression, damage and dropped crafting materials. Hunting is a way to acquire various crafting materials required for the creation of many items in the game, or they can be brought back to the camp for food or sold for money.

Legendary Animals are the rarest types of animals, and the hardest to kill. They yield the greatest rewards, however.

Ever since the original Red Dead Redemption was released back in 2010 and swiftly completed by Matt he has been eagerly anticipating another return to the Wild West. In Matt's totally non-biased opinion the story told in the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the best ever (at least as far as games go). And while some story DLC would be great, Matt isn't counting on it!
