Red Dead Online “A Land Of Opportunities” Story Missions Guide

Kerosene, Tar, and Greed

The Kerosene, Tar, and Greed mission is unlocked right after completing the Highly Illegal and Highly Immoral mission if your Honor rating is low enough. This is a mission for 2-4 players.

To begin the mission, you need to talk with Horley near Blackwater. Here, Mr. Jones will remark how Horley found a man truly suited for vengeance, commenting on the gifts each man has and how they use them. Horley will not pay much attention to Jones’ philosophical rambling, saying that he needed a man of action.

Once Mr. Jones is done talking about morality, and possible redemption, Horley will inform you that he has had no news from Mrs LeClerk, and that you should go see a man named Samson Flinch if you’re in need of money. The man can be found near Dewberry Creek in Lemoyne.

At the marked location on the map, Horley will introduce Samson Flinch to your Posse. The man is looking for help to get back at some people who have done him wrong. He was planning a robbery for over a year, and when the time came, his partners betrayed him. He is now seeking help to complete the robbery and make his former partners pay for it.

When you regain control of your character, mount your horse and follow Samson. On the way, he will give you more details on the hit. You will have to get on a train transporting members of a detective agency, take them out and wait until the train gets to the Kerosene and Tar plant. Once here, you will have to kill all of the guards, get to the second floor of the plant to make the actual robbery, and get out of the place alive.

Samson will bring you near the ambush point and then leave for Valentine, where he is going to make some noise to avoid getting incriminated for the robbery. Once off your horse you need to stop the train, and you’ll do so by tying a member of your Posse to the train tracks. Once the train is stopped, you can get on it and start fighting the Pinkertons on board. There aren’t that many on board, so it’s not too difficult to get rid of them.

Once all your Posse members are on the train, you must drive it to the Oil Field. There’s also a Maxim Gun on board, which will be very useful during your assault on the plant.

As soon as the train is close to the plant, the guards will notice that the train has been taken over. Use the Maxim Gun to deal with the enemies approaching the train, then get off to finish the remaining ones. There’s plenty of cover in the plant, so always shoot from behind it to minimize damage.

Once enough enemies have been defeated you will be prompted to head to the upstairs office. Fight your way through to the office to meet the industrialists, who will try to save their lives by pleading with you and escaping. Kill them and loot their bodies without remorse.

Now the time has come to make your escape. Hop back on the train with your Posse members, and continue remaining focused, as more enemies will come after you during your escape. Use the Maxim Gun to dispatch them easily. After a while, a cutscene will play and the mission will be complete.

More Than One Way to Earn a Buck

The More Than One Way to Earn a Buck mission is unlocked after completing the Kerosene, Tar, and Greed mission. Like for the previous mission, you need to have low honor to access it. This is a mission for 2-4 players.

Now that Samson Finch managed to get the robbery he planned done, it’s time to make his former partners pay. You will find him near Fort Mercer.

Once at the fort, you will start fighting against enemies coming at you. Take care of them, and then get close enough to the entrance to be able to open it with dynamite.

Inside the fort you will need to deal with more enemies. There are quite a few of them, so always be mindful of your position. Samson’s partner can be found inside the cabin, and he can be killed by either going inside or by shooting at him with a long range weapon through the window.

Despite Samson’s partner being dead, vengeance has not yet obtained. You must get close to the ammunition dump and detonate it with dynamite. Destroy all ammo, leave the fort and ride to the marked location. Here, you will meet Samson who rewards you for having helped him. Mission complete.

Ever since the original Red Dead Redemption was released back in 2010 and swiftly completed by Matt he has been eagerly anticipating another return to the Wild West. In Matt's totally non-biased opinion the story told in the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the best ever (at least as far as games go). And while some story DLC would be great, Matt isn't counting on it!
