I cannot seem to figure out how the deadeye targeting works, even after reviewing tutorials and video walkthroughs online. For sure, I've seen an X appear when using the R1 (PS4) button to target. But only one time! It hasn't worked any other time I've tried and I'm stuck on Sharpshooter 2 challenge.
I'm in Chapter 3 — deadeye level 7! I've been trying to use the Springfield Rifle and Carbine Repeater to get the Sharpshooter 2 challenge complete. I find 2 different species, I aim at the first one, select deadeye with R3, time slows, I put reticule where I want to fire and hit R1 but no X comes up.
I've read that you can get unlimited Xs depending on how many bullets you have in your gun; one guy showed marking 10+ Xs on one animal with some sort of rifle. I've also read that you can only get as many Xs as you have loaded, so 6 for revolver, 1 for rifle, 2 for shotgun, etc. Which is it?!?

WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING WRONG?!?
The only thing I can think of is that I'm still holding in L2 while doing all this for aiming. But maybe I need to release that once I'm in deadeye?
I'm about ready to find a real gun and shoot my real self in my real face. ;-(
