The Sawed-Off Shotgun can be acquired in Red Dead Redemption in two different ways, by purchasing it at the Thieves' Landing Gunsmith or by picking it up after the shootout at Pike's Basin hideout, where it's dropped by Julius Grimes.
The Sawed-Off Shotgun is one of the most powerful weapons of the game, sporting high power and rate of fire. The weapon is most effective at short range, however, as it has one of the worst range stats of the entire game.
The Sawed-Off Shotgun can also be obtained in the Red Dead Redemption online multiplayer mode. The weapon is unlocked automatically upon reaching rank 18. Related weapon challenges are also unlocked at the same rank, which give the player the weapon's gold variant upon completion. The variant comes with no stats difference.

- The Sawn-Off Shotgun is based upon a real weapon, the Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Shotgun. A high-quality weapon, it has been in production for only twelve years, from 1883 until 1895 only. Due to the high cost of the weapon, which was due to the actual production cost, it didn't sell much commercially, making its production run quite short, compared to other guns produced in the late 1880s.
- The Sawn-Off Shotgun is one of John Marston favorite weapons, as he expresses multiple times during the course of Red Dead Redemption. The character is also often portraied with it, like in the game's UK and US cover art.
