How Long Is Red Dead Redemption 2? Story and 100% Playtime

How many hours RDR2 takes for the main story, story plus extras and 100% completion, plus its chapter and Epilogue structure.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Weapons Revealed

Red Dead Redemption 2 takes about 50–60 hours to finish if you concentrate on the main story. A playthrough that includes a healthy amount of stranger missions, exploration and hunting is more likely to take 80–100 hours, while a thorough 100% run can take roughly 170–190 hours.

Your total depends heavily on travel, camp time, optional missions and whether you pursue the game’s formal 100% checklist. RDR2 is deliberately paced, so two players following the same missions can finish many hours apart.

RDR2 playtime by approach

Play style Typical time What it includes
Main story 50–60 hours Most required missions with limited optional activity
Story plus extras 80–100 hours Stranger missions, exploration, hunting and camp activities
100% / completionist 170–190 hours Challenges, collectibles, compendium work and the formal completion checklist

These are planning ranges, not a countdown. Using fast travel and skipping optional dialogue reduces the total; exploring on horseback and completing side stories increases it.

How many chapters are in RDR2?

Red Dead Redemption 2 has six main chapters followed by a two-part Epilogue. Completing Chapter 6 is therefore not the end of the playable story. The Epilogue contains required missions and brings the narrative to its full conclusion.

Does 100% completion require everything?

No. The in-game 100% target uses a defined checklist rather than demanding every possible interaction, item and compendium entry. It still adds substantial time because it covers selected missions, challenges, collectibles, discoveries and player progression.

Our RDR2 100% completion guide explains the exact requirements. If you only want the ending, you do not need to finish that checklist first.

Can you keep playing after the story?

Yes. After the final Epilogue missions you can continue exploring the open world, complete most remaining activities and work toward 100%. Some camp interactions and chapter-specific requests are missable, so complete those when they appear during the story.

Ever since the original Red Dead Redemption was released back in 2010 and swiftly completed by Matt he has been eagerly anticipating another return to the Wild West. In Matt's totally non-biased opinion the story told in the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the best ever (at least as far as games go). And while some story DLC would be great, Matt isn't counting on it!
