Best Saddles in RDR2: Story Mode and Red Dead Online

The best saddle setups for RDR2 Story Mode and Red Dead Online, including the Nacogdoches, Hooded Stirrups and Panther Trail Saddle.

Horses & Saddles

The best saddle in Red Dead Online is the Nacogdoches Saddle paired with Hooded Stirrups. In RDR2 Story Mode, the best choice depends on what you value: an Improved Gerden Trail Saddle with Hooded Stirrups gives excellent stamina efficiency, while the crafted Panther Trail Saddle offers stronger all-round core and regeneration bonuses without buying separate stirrups.

Story Mode and Online use different saddle inventories and balance, so a recommendation for one mode may not exist in the other. This guide separates them.

Best saddle in Red Dead Online

For maximum practical performance, use the Nacogdoches Saddle with Hooded Stirrups. The saddle reduces stamina drain and is unusual because it can also improve speed and acceleration when combined with upgraded stirrups. Hooded Stirrups add the largest available stirrup stamina-drain reduction.

This combination is especially useful for long-distance riding. Once your horse is fully bonded, calming it while riding restores stamina too, so the setup can travel for extremely long periods without exhausting the horse.

Best Online alternatives

  • Upland Saddle: a strong one-piece choice with excellent core and regeneration figures. Its stirrups are fixed, so it cannot match the Nacogdoches plus Hooded Stirrups combination for every metric.
  • Role saddles: viable alternatives when you prefer their appearance or already own one. With strong stirrups, the real-world difference is often small on a bonded horse.
  • Early ranks: buy the best stirrups currently available before repeatedly replacing the saddle. Stamina-drain reduction usually makes the most noticeable difference.

Best saddle in RDR2 Story Mode

The Improved Gerden Trail Saddle with Hooded Stirrups is the strongest stable-bought setup when your priority is reducing stamina drain. It is available through a stable and can be upgraded as better stirrups become available.

The Panther Trail Saddle is the best crafted all-round option. The Trapper makes it after you supply a perfect panther pelt. It has excellent health-core drain, stamina-core drain and regeneration bonuses, with its performance parts built in. The Beaver Roping Saddle and Rattlesnake Vaquero Saddle are also excellent if their required perfect pelts are easier for you to obtain.

Which Story Mode saddle should you choose?

  • Lowest stamina drain: Improved Gerden Trail plus Hooded Stirrups.
  • Best crafted all-round saddle: Panther Trail.
  • Best early-game approach: use an improved saddle and buy the best stirrups you have unlocked; do not delay progression hunting a marginal stat difference.

Do saddle stats matter?

They matter, but horse bonding and stamina management matter more than small differences between top saddles. Feed and groom your horse, reach bonding level four, and press the calm command periodically while riding. Ever since the original Red Dead Redemption was released back in 2010 and swiftly completed by Matt he has been eagerly anticipating another return to the Wild West. In Matt's totally non-biased opinion the story told in the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the best ever (at least as far as games go). And while some story DLC would be great, Matt isn't counting on it!
