Had the same problem and solved it! I went to the small saloon at night, where I found John. However, I was unable to speak to him and start the mission. So I started antagonizing other people at the saloon, which of course resulted in a fight. John Marston, being a loyal friend and gangmember, fled as fast as he could. Next day, he was standing in the sheep farm and I was able to start the mission
