Didn't get as far as hunting! I got ambushed and died and when I re spawned the pelt was gone. 👍🏻

Had the same issue with alligator skin. Fixed mine by skinning 2 or more of the same animal. Then go into the satchel and select “discard all”(which only prompts if you have 2 or more of the same skin) like I said this worked for me.

That's what I have done is go into the saddlebag and discard it.
