Confused about how you're supposed to actually figure out the strange statue puzzle.

I found the painting first, then I found the statues. I went back to the painting to look for ANY clues but didn't find anything at all. I had counted the number of fingers before so I knew it was something to do with the fingers. But what's the point of the painting? I don't see any point to it, it doesn't seem to give any clues towards how to actually solve the puzzle. 

I'm not looking for the answer, it's how to actually solve it. Like, how did the first person figure this out? 

There's a guide for it in this site but the guide says the numbers 2 to 8 are somewhere on the painting but I also can't find that anywhere either.
