I been playing standard edition if I purchase the special edition will I be able to cont. my game or will I have to start a new game? im on chapter 3.

I am actually not sure. I think that would be a good question to ask Rockstar directly. You don't want your progress to be wiped by accident or anything.

I bought Steel box version but didn't put the code in for a week.  When I finally popped the code in my game carried on from where I'd been & I could access the extras.
