How do I stop a gator from instantly killing me?

Everytime my horse bucks me off, a gator bites my leg and i lose half my health, if i try anything (killing it, running away) it always gets me and instantly kills me.
is there any way to kill it/ run away other than dying?

If a gator grabs you, you’re dead. In an extremely rare case you might be able to get away from it, but that’s a one in a million. I just kill every gator I see from a small distance. I skin them so I know more easily which ones are a threat. If you want to kill it, you need a rifle, not a repeater, and shoot it anywhere in the head. Even it’s snout. So just start killing every gator you see before you head over where they are.
