The thing Red Dead Redemption 2 players have asked for since 2018 is here, not from Rockstar Games but from a modder. A new PC mod called enRAGE, built by nicklovin99 and released in Early Access in mid-October, layers a full Shadow of Mordor style Nemesis System and a living, warring world on top of the game. The strangers you rob, beat or insult stop being disposable. They become named people who remember you and come looking.
The base game itself is already a cut above most open worlds here. NPCs react to your Honor, your clothing and your wanted level, townsfolk comment on your reputation and lawmen remember a man with a bounty. That reactivity is part of why the world feels alive. What it mostly is not is personal. Mug a stranger in Valentine and the world will remember it in reputation meters and flavor dialogue, which is great but it’s different from, for example, a specific person who nursing a grudge for weeks and bringing friends along.
We once ran a feature on five ways to build a better honor and reputation system and persistent, personal consequences sat near the top. The obstacle has always been legal as much as technical, since Warner Bros. Games holds a patent on the original Nemesis System from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, that does not expire until 2036. No commercial studio can ship that mechanic for another decade. A mod operates in different territory.
enRAGE builds that missing layer. Greet a relevant NPC once and they become a tracked individual with a name, a temperament like Hothead or Coward, a trade, a faith, a family and a backstory set in the game’s own timeline. From then on they keep a private score of how you have treated them, the thefts, the beatings, the dead friends. Push them far enough and they move from resentful to vengeful to murderous, then return later in the same towns, sometimes scarred or limping from the wounds you gave them, sometimes with relatives who want their own payback.
The world around those grudges runs on its own too. The mod gives outlaw outfits like the O’Driscoll Boys and the U.S. Army real hierarchies, leaders, officers, camps, supplies and territory, and it sets them at war with each other whether you take part or not. Kill a leader and the rank passes to a successor. You can tip these fights by sabotaging supplies, picking off officers or hogtying a man and interrogating him, though a frightened captive might lie. A mask helps, since a face no one sees is a grudge no one can hold.
Every beating and gunfight leaves its mark. A persistent injury log tracks each wound on an X-ray style view. An in-game World tab and period newspapers record what happens around you, your own deeds and the gang wars included. The result is a playthrough that generates its own rivalries and side stories, running quietly in the background alongside the main story and the stranger missions.
None of this is a finished Rockstar feature. enRAGE is Early Access, currently at version 0.9.5.2, PC Story Mode only and built for one person to maintain, so bugs are expected and the author asks players to send reports and log files. It needs the usual script tools, ScriptHookRDR2 by Alexander Blade and ScriptHookRDR2DotNet V2, put together with AI assistance. Recent updates have gone to stability and saving. Version 0.9.5 added Epilogue support, a jump to 1907 as John Marston that clears the Arthur-era grudges while keeping the 1899 world intact. There is no public roadmap or 1.0 date, only a stated goal to make it feel native to the base game.
If you want to try it, the mod is live on its Nexus Mods page, with the current build on the files tab and more from the author’s profile. Treat it as what it is, an ambitious work in progress rather than a polished release.
