Springfield Rifle

The Springfield Rifle is a weapon that appears in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Redemption. It's not available in any form in Red Dead Revolver.

Springfield Rifle

The Springfield Rifle belongs to the Rifle weapon class, and it can be set in the Rifle/Repeater weapon slot in Red Dead Redemption. A decisive upgrade from rifled muskets, the Springfield Rifle can be fired up to 23 times per minute, as opposed to the 2, 3 times of rifled muskets, making it a much more reliable weapon.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The Springfield Rifle is set to appear in Red Dead Redemption 2 and likely in Red Dead Online. How to obtain the weapon in either has yet to be determined. An extremely powerful weapon with great range, it can dispatch the thoughest of enemies from a significant distance. Its limited ammo capacity and fire rate, however, make it a risky weapon to use at close range. Thanks to its firepower and range, it's also one of the best weapons to be used while hunting.

Red Dead Redemption

The Springfield Rifle is one of the earliest rifles that can be obtained in Red Dead Redemption. It can be purchased for $300 at the Thieves' Landing Gunsmith with Neutral Honor and for half the price with low Honor. The weapon can also be acquired for free by completing the Gaptooth Breach Hideout, looting it from dead enemies in The Assault on Fort Mercer mission, and on the raft during the We Shall Be Together in Paradise mission.

Thanks to its high firepower and range, the Sprinfield Rifle manages to stay as a very useful weapon througout the game, despite being one of the earliest rifles that can be acquired. Its low reload speed and ammo capacity, only four shots, makes it a very bad weapon to use against multiple enemies at short range, as reloading takes some time and leaves John Marston vulnerable.

The Springfield Rifle is also available in the Red Dead Redemption online multiplayer mode. It's obtained automatically upon reaching rank 13.

The Springfield Rifle makes an appearance in the Undead Nightmare DLC expansion as well. It can be obtained by either stopping the zombie outbreak in Ridgewood Farm or by collecting it after completing random events like Stranded Camp event or Bolter Banquet events.

  • The Springfield Rifle is based upon a real weapon, the Sprinfield Model 1873 "Trapdoor" Carbine. The weapon is the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the US Army, and it was widely used during the battles against the Native American tribes. The rifle continued being the main service rifle of the US Army, despite reported jamming issues, until 1892, when it started getting replaced by the Springfield model 1892 bolt-action rifle.
  • The Red Dead Redemption Gunsmith description for the Springfield Rifle is historically accurate, as it mentions that the rifle has been used since the battles against natives in the late 1880s.

Matt Stone

Ever since the original Red Dead Redemption was released back in 2010 and swiftly completed by Matt he has been eagerly anticipating another return to the Wild West. In Matt's totally non-biased opinion the story told in the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the best ever (at least as far as games go). And while some story DLC would be great, Matt isn't counting on it! Matt is on Twitter (but not really active).
