Volcanic Pistol

The Volcanic Pistol is a weapon that appears in Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Redemption and their online multiplayer modes.

Volcanic Pistol

The Volcanic Pistol belongs to the Pistol weapon class and it can be set in the Revolvers/Pistols weapon slot in Red Dead Redemption. It's a lever-action weapon which utilizes pistol ammo.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The Volcanic Pistol is set to appear in Red Dead Redemption 2. Acquisition methods haven't been detailed for the single player campaign yet, but it can be acquired for free by Gunsmiths in Red Dead Online by purchasing the game's Ultimate Edition together with the Pump-action Shotgun and the Lancaster Varmint Rifle.

Red Dead Redemption

The Volcanic Pistol can be acquired relatively early in the game. It can be purchased for 100$ by the Armadillo Gunsmith once rank 5 has been reached. The weapon can also be obtained for free in the Twin Rocks gang hideout by defeating the titular gang.

The Volcanic Pistol in Red Dead Redemption is an odd weapon. Despite being decent, especially in the early game, it doesn't see much use due to the fact that it uses Pistol ammo, which is difficult to obtain early on. As the game progresses, and Pistol ammo becomes more readily available, there are much better weapons using Pistol ammo that make the Volcanic Pistol obsolete.

The Volcanic Pistol is available in the multiplayer mode of Red Dead Redemption as well. The weapon is unlocked automatically when reaching rank 5. It can also be obtained by killing another player who has the weapon equipped. The Volcanic Pistol is much more useful in multiplayer than in single player, as it's possible to kill another player with a single headshot. It's the weapon of its category that's able to do so.

The Volcanic Pistol is also available in the Undead Nightmare DLC, and it's obtained in a similar way as the main single-player campaign. To find it, players have to save Twin Rocks from the zombies. It's also available as a reward for the I Don't Feel Too Good Mister random event. To obtain it, players have to tie the victim before he or she turns into a zombie.

  • The Volcanic Pistol is based upon a real weapon, the Volcanic Repeating Pistol. The weapon, which was not the first repeating pistol, was originally patented in 1854 and it was the first weapon in a line of firearms that would eventually lead to the development of the lever action rifles of the American West.
  • The Red Dead Redemption weapon looks remarkably similar to the real weapon, but they have different loading methods. The real weapon's bullets had to be loaded through a tube magazine beneath the barrel. The two weapons, however, are quite similar regarding not being utilized much. The real Volcanic Pistol saw very limited use due to the ammunition and limited powder capacity, which made it a relatively weak pistol compared to others.
  • Despite being far from being a heavily used weapon, the real Volcanic Pistol has a far-reaching legacy. The Volcanic Arms Company went bankrupt in 1857, and it was later bought by Winchester, which not only continued producing the weapon but also used its mechanism to produce the Henry rifle, named so as its production was supervised by Benjamin Tyler Henry. Years later, Oliver Winchester further refined the mechanism for the Winchester Repeater.

Matt Gibbs

Ever since the original Red Dead Redemption was released back in 2010 and swiftly completed by Matt he has been eagerly anticipating another return to the Wild West. In Matt's totally non-biased opinion the story told in the sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the best ever (at least as far as games go). And while some story DLC would be great, Matt isn't counting on it! Find him on LinkedIn or Twitter.
