Can't tell you how much I appreciate this advice. I'm off to the marshes pronto, where I gathered lots of egrets and orchids and spoonbills in Story mode. Those 'gators creep me out though - more than once with my eyes focussed on a glowing orchid I have run into one of these monsters.

Much appreciated advice Buddy. Today will be my third day online and I have been living on beans and berries and nervous energy, not knowing who to trust, being totally confused in missions, on a slow horse, with weak weapons and ammunition, and in relative poverty, so any advice that will make a marginal difference is very welcome. I am loving the game (if it is a game at all) without the apathy that the 'hand-holding' Story mode can induce, but I will enjoy it more when I have achieved some knowledge, skills and parity with those, especially 'griefers', with whom I compete for living space and goodies. If anyone can advise me on how I can make early money I would be grateful. I mean $124 for a bow, and a gold bar for a fishing lure! Inflationary prices from the Story mode - and gold seems to be worth a lot less. I willl upgrade my tent on your advice but first I need to earn some sponduliks. Don't yet know my priorities in these early days. Do I upgrade my carbine or buy a shotgun, or improve my camp. I thought I might tame and sell some wild horses for dough but the online horses seem much more twitchy and bold at the slightest approach. On advice I accepted an invitation to join a posse, whose members had been 'grieving' me and triggering my retaliation, (no names no pack drill) but I left when I saw its members were using throwing knives and explosive slugs on innocent bystanders. Not sure whether my current maximum honour is at threat if I am in a posse that indulges in gratuitous violence for no obvious gain. One last question for now, is there less wildlife at large in the online game? What little there is disappears the instant I equip my binoculars to study their form, or touch my bow. I look forward to retreating to the wilderness for hunting when I am better equipped - the grizzly bear shrugged off my entire armoury on its way to "rendering me tooth and nail - for the female of the species is more deadly than the male".

Thanks to all those who have responded to my question about camp fires.
-
Buddy that is really useful many thanks. I will look out for those fires tomorrow. I have meat but in the 2 days I've been in the online game I've survived on wild carrots and beans. I feel lost and incompetent in this game but like the extra excitement of unpredictability over the Story mode.

Yes my PS4 Pro was disconnected three times today and I gave my service providers a hard time but perhaps the fault lies elsewhere.
-
Hey Buddy I am ranked very similar to yourself and have a related question. I can't just set up a camp fire the wilderness as I used to offline, to cook food and craft items like arrows. I can set up a camp but it's not in the place where I have business to attend to like hunting. I don't want to be transported to somewhere else for a camp. I want to make a fire and cook meat where I am - Cananyone tell me if this is possible.

Love your style Buttlint.

Nor did shop discounts for 'honour' I guess. Yes it's a modern sensibility.
-
Thanks again. I had Defensive mode on and some Dude was waiting for me to spawn three times and shot me in the back immediately each time. Eventually I was able to knife him just so I could get on with my game. In these initial encounters I have very little money and no ammunition and poor weapons so 'easy meat' for some.
-
Ah that explains it very well thanks. I used sleep as a way of saving and time shifting, and healing in the offline game.. What's the point of having a bed then?
-
Good advice N7Creed and thanks. It's not just that as a new gamer and in my mid-70s my reactions are slower and I am slower to pick up on what's happening, I find my aggression levels are low to non-existent. Having just started the online game I am non-plussed when some total stranger decides to kill me for no good reason. In my first 10 minutes I encountered a surreal live horse's head sticking up out of the track. I tried to rescue it but it head butted me and died! It was like a Dhali video.

Hi. I am new to the online game and also cannot sleep at my camp. No Sleep prompt appears wherever I stand. I am not aware of unfinished business.
-
Thanks a bunch Buddy. Found them in the General store.

Just ventured into Online and need to get some binoculars to assess the quality of animals before I shoot them. Where do I get binoculars folks?

Thanks to y'all - 'tenderfoot' - Jon

I've just started to give it a go - strangely nervous and excited and feeling very much like a 'babe in the woods' and easy meet for some malicious veteran. - Jon

Thanks Buddie - that sounds quite scary. "Griefers"? I have taken my first faltering steps on-line this morning. What a lot to learn!
-
Juddsie thanks again. I have taken the plunge and begun the on-line game this morning. I really am very ignorant about it all. I was surprised it wasn't the same game beginning in Colter with Dutch and so on through the Chapters. Then surprised that my character has no dialogue. My character, mysteriously called Kratos635wild from Resident Evil 5 off-line game, looks and acts a bit like the dumb one of the Marx Bros. It's like being a new born there is so much I don't know. Do I need to get one of those interactive headsets to play on-line? Having said that I am quite excited about the adventure to come. Thanks Buddie - Jon

Ah, now I am tempted to try RDR2 online! The notion of customising my character and still being able to go solo is very appealing. It's not that I am anti-social but definitely shy of interacting with others on-line. I think I missed a special offer for playing on-line - I'm going to look into it today.
-
Further to my recommendation of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, (Coen Brothers written and directed) the Two Chapter'Vignettes that stand out are "The Meal Ticket' and 'The Gal who got Rattled'. Enjoy.
-
Is it possible to play on-line still as a single player? Is there an additional fee?
-
Thanks for your responses Juddsie. I'm going to try to acquire a lot more game know-how before I inflict myself on other players. I have just been fishing again in Elysian Pool without success - even though I went all the way to Lagras to get the right lures. If you don't get the Heads about legendary fish in the area does that mean one won't spawn? Also I'm smarting with the injustice of being attacked at camp by Murfrees and having defended myself and even neatly disposed of the bodies in the river, that next morning some alleged 'witnesses' materialised to accuse me of murder. I am on PS4 but since all of this is new to me, very new, I don't know what you mean by 'add me'. This forum is the first time I've ventured into such territory - only on my Mac not on the PS4 itself. I think I left the 'friends' box unticked. It's all very mysterious to me. No doubt I am not properly using all the buttons in this forum.
-
Thanks for that. I've never gamed on-line at all and apart from not knowing how to do it I am acutely conscious of my incompetence and loathe to have someone else reliant on me in any way.
-
Boondock Saints - that's another one for me to check out thanks. I'm enjoying Ozark (Netflix) at the moment darkened tense.

I must watch The Big Lebowski as I am a fan of the Coen Brothers. I recommend The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs by the Coens to all RDR2 players - some wonderfully poignant western vignettes with amazing cinematography featuring western panoramas and western themes.
