Rockstar mission template

I said some time ago, in the depths of another post, that I've never been that interested in Rockstar's story modes and missions. This came much to the horror of some, but there's always been a reason for it, and sadly, RDR2 is no exception.

There's no doubt that their story telling is good, but their application of that story into a compelling mission-based game, to me, is very poor.

Here is the Rockstar mission template:

  1. Get an idea about a thing
  2. Ride 20 minutes to place
  3. Do the thing
  4. Thing goes wrong
  5. Have to cover behind a wall and shoot 80 guys to escape
  6. Have to shoot more guys as you ride to safety

It's boring. I physically rolled my eyes yesterday as Arthur so predictably ran to cover in a cutscene and initiated step 5. At that point you're just going through the motions – shoot some guys, reload a hundred times, follow the yellow dot, shoot some more guys, ride away, turn back, shoot the guys chasing you. "There's more coming from the left!" Yawn.

What makes it worse is they're just mindless peds that just run at you. There's no challenge, it's just boring point and shoot until they're gone.

However you look at it, it's an antiquated method and lacks any kind of subtlety and grace. This may come as an unpopular opinion to some, but it's dull and tedious.

For a game that's taken 8 years to build and is supposedly "revolutionising gaming", for me it's no more than RDR1 but with better graphics and a few more features.

Shame.

Not everything is run and gun, there is a lot of other varieties in the game as well such as fishing, hunting, gathering supplies, robbing banks and trains, gathering animals into a certain area, and escort them, sneak around people and go to a certain place. It's a very long story so most of the game could seem somewhat repetitive.

May I ask what chapter you are on?

They've just woken up on the beach after escaping on the ship.

Yeah so you're ahead of me right now. So far I'm enjoying the game, this game is a lot slower, and it's something you have to be really into. Sometimes the missions can feel repetitive at sometimes, but then we got missions that are different and that refreshes the mood, at least for me.

Prepare yourself for a LOT of steps 1-6.

I'm sorry you don't enjoy the game, that must suck. Well, some people are different I guess about what's fun and what's not. Hopefully Read Dead Online is more your thing.

I'll enjoy it when the story is out of the way and I can access the full map. This is what I said in my original comment last year some time – I did hundreds of hours in SP in RDR1 but didn't enjoy the story. Same here.
