How do I keep and animal on my lasso? I cannot seem to stop an animal or person from escaping before I can hogtie them.

You have to continue to hold down L2 as you hit triangle(PS4) to get off your horse. While continuing to hold L2, use the left control stick to inch towards your lassoed target. When you get close enough, it will prompt you to hit circle to kill the animal or hogtie if it's a person.

Many thanks Buddy.I wasn't holding down L2. I will put this into practice and let you know how I get on.

to hogtie a player or ennemy , you better tackle it using circle ( melee attack ) with lasso equipped , you will smack the guy on ground and hogtie him directly
