On game ten minutes and got sniped twice.

Question

Posted

It was a while ago since I played story mode and had to learn the console all over again. I had been warned to stay off online but I have seen a number of vids of online and it was very interesting. In all the hours I have watched not one person was sniped. I saw that the online version appeared to be pretty interesting. Different land, different animals, and before I could explore, bam.
I gather online is strictly pvp and no way to protect yourself from that? I did see one post about a white flag but that person was sniped too. I think it would be ridiculous to be carrying a white flag around all the time. Is there a way to be online and enjoy online with out being killed every 2 minutes? Or is this like GTA griefer heaven? Note, I have every major GTA version but will not go to 6 after the experience I have had with 5.

Last question, can you make  a private session like GTA5 and still get credit for quests?

There is a passive/ defensive mode that you can choose that will help mitigate "griefing" by other players and provide options / outcomes in the event you are killed.

To make a long story short though, if you you really want to avoid all risks, it's is best to avoid other players.....period.

- Don't choose missions / tasks that will automatically change your mode from defensive to offensive.

- When you first spawn into the map, the game tends to put you in regions with other players (IME).  Pick a part of the map away from where you really want to be and then travel there by horse.  IME, that usually helps limit the interactions you will have with others.

- Stay out of towns where other players are and if you have to go in, make your visit brief and give others a wide berth.

- If you can, play with friends in a posse.  The old saying regarding "safety in numbers" applies here too.  When you have several folks to ride with, other don't tend to mess with you as much IMO / IME but if they do, sometimes you can turn the tables on them and they will quit.  ....o just ride out to another part of the map.

- Don't engage griefers unless you're will to pay the price of escalating the encounter.....repeatedly.  If you use the defensive feature and advantages it gives you while just accepting your death. etc. by just escaping and moving on, there is little satisfaction for the offender.  Remember....their sole purpose most times is to get a rise out of you by provoking a response.

As far as GTAV, there is no single player option like the one recently added where you can get play all of the missions, run all businesses, etc. with just you and/or friends.  However, the "MTU exploit" does work like it did for GTAV but just not as well.  .....at least the last time I tried it about a year or to ago.  It helps force you into your own session but it's inconsistent.  .....and any missions that lead to you leaving the session can dump you back into a populated server once done, etc.  You can also be kicked out of the session from time to time.  Not really worth it IMO.

Yes. You can create a password protected private lobby that eliminates all players from your game except the ones you invite. All roles and missions can be accomplished. You can not, however, participate in server “events” and other community activities without leaving the private lobby. Not a huge loss in my book. Made the game much more pleasant to play in a private lobby.

The game actually rewards players for killing other players. It’s part of the daily challenges and a bunch of other things. People might snipe you but it is only part of a mission they’re attempting to accomplish. That’s not a big deal. However, when players snipe you and then you kill them again and again, they get really pissed. They could just leave, having accomplished their mission goal, but they keep coming back to exact revenge. Still not horrible if you’re skilled at killing other players and it’s what you want to do, but if you just want to be left alone so you can buy a new coat… yeah. Sucks.

The worst is that players have been able to hack the game and can actually track you when you log in, and teleport to that spot as well and take you out before you can even move. That was the last straw for me and is why I created a private lobby. I could have also hacked the game to track them in turn, and then it would be up to whoever had the fastest internet and rig, but I’m not playing Red Dead to grief other players. I don’t get my jollies that way. Engaging in pissing contests on the Internet is so pointless anyway. No real consequences.  I’m here to play the game,  and it is a wonderful game!

Google “red dead online private lobby”. You can thank me later. :)
