Red Dead Redemption 2 Runs Best On Xbox One X

Well, this has got to be a little bit embarrassing for Sony.

Ironically, after a lengthy marketing campaign which linked Red Dead Redemption 2 to the PlayStation 4, it turns out Microsoft's flagship console is apparently the best platform to play the game on - if you don't care about timed exclusivity, that is.

Eurogamer tested the game using every console it is available on to compare performance and the Xbox One X came out on top.

Since we're talking consoles, performance variance won't be as wild as it is on a wide array of PC configurations. With PC not being in the picture at all, comparisons are easier to draw. The consoles tested were the PS4 Pro, the regular PS4, the Xbox One X, the regular Xbox One and the Xbox One S. Xbox grabbed a position on both ends of the spectrum: while the X runs the game best, the Red Dead Redemption 2 experience is worst on Xbox One S.

This game perfectly shows off the hardware capabilities and native 4K rendering of the Xbox One X that Microsoft had hoped would sell the device. One the basest measures of performance is FPS. Red Dead Redemption 2's target framerate is 30 FPS which has been the industry standard for consoles, with only few recent games aiming for 60 FPS, which was previously only possible on PC.

The Xbox One X is most stable. While the other consoles all have clear variance between wilderness and dense urban areas, the X is almost unwaveringly locked at 30, with only minimal dips into the upper 20's in Saint Denis, the biggest city in the game. The PS4 Pro, which is the runner-up platform in this race, gets more noticeable drops in dense areas.

Resolution is the other main point of difference - however, take note that these differences only have any meaningful visual impact when playing at 4K. While Xbox One X can render natively on 4K displays, PS4 Pro upscales from 1080p with checkerboarding (a predictive technique of filling gaps with pixels similar to those next to them). The difference between the two is apparent.

Looking at the regular console versions, the experience is barely discernible, which bodes well for the average player. We'd guess the vast majority of players have a regular Xbox One or PS4 over the X, S or Pro versions. Another thing to keep in mind here is that although they are comparatively worse than the Xbox One X, none of the other options are bad.

Rockstar created a visual masterpiece with Red Dead Redemption 2 that looks stunning on every platform and just might be the most technically impressive game of this year so far.

While Red Dead Redemption had more substantial graphical differences in terms of clutter density and textures, the overall visual experience of Red Dead Redemption 2 is universal across platforms. Red Dead Redemption 2 is out now!
