Medals and savimg

When replaying a mission, if I get a higher medal than I got the first time through, the higher level one should replace the previous one correct? 

 

Also, I am making a manual save beside each mission so I keep my guns and everything I have and don’t have just the basics for weapons-what I’m finding out I’s that when I do that, I get asked if I want to overwrite the autisavd with that new game info-I assume I don’t, so I can keep reloading it until I get gold-so should I turn off sutissvd when I get asked if I choose not to overwrite?

Like I said, I want to say this does indeed happen so the best "score" overwrites the worse one but someone else will need to verify. I am only going off of what seems to have happened with a few of mine but I was not really paying attention.

Can someone verify this before I bother with any of the medals? I was wondering the same thing myself but can't find anything about it online anywhere.
