cant pick up weapon from gunslinger mission

hi everyone simply just love the game .

question is on a few some missions     paying a social call   and    The Noblest Of Men And A Woman ,also in general when i kill npcs i cant pick up the weapons in the missions cant pick up the shotgun and the pistols .

on the screen it shows  L1  AND UP AND DOWN ARROWS , and when i try to do anything nothing happens , i think i must be missing something ,  if some nice person can help explain i be most happy even more happy if there is a you tube video explaining this .

There may be multiple actions in that same spot also.  you might have to tap R1 to cycle through them to pick up the gun, or hat, or loot the body, or whatever.
