How do you get your horse back?

Question

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I can't find anything that covers this exact instance.  I was leaving a city and was ambushed.  I was killed, and my horse was gone from there (along with everything associated with the horse, including the saddle).  The guides that I found say to go to the stables, but my horse was not there.  So, how do you get your horse back after you've been killed, especially when it is not available to bring back from the stables?  I couldn't see it anywhere on the map, either.  The only options I had left at the stables were my remaining horses.

I had to revert to a backup save to get it back (lost progress because of this).

Edit - This has happened twice now.  I have lost the horse and haven't been able to get it back after the second time.

Edit 2 - I have discovered some guides do not cover that the horse is permanently gone.

Since you`re refering to saves I guess you`re in story-mode. Good horses can be found all over the game. Like the black arabian you can get in Saint Denis*,  the white one up by Lake Isabella, the smaller red one north-west of Owanija dam (respawns) and the striped one nort-west of the Wapiti Reservation.  I grabbed my first free horse up at the Chez Porter ranch, an American Standard breed, 5 speed 4 health.

Btw, free $120,- every "day" by visiting the small cabin behind Shady Belle & the wrecken cabin south of Moonstone Pond.

While looking for the red arab; found the obelisk yet & the goldbars?

You mention that you lost your saddle with the horse. Are you sure it ran off and wasn't killed with you instead? That is unfortunately often going to happen. If the horse was killed, you will be able to find your saddle, but the horse will be gone for good. The best I can give you is to save often and keep with your horse to build up your bond with it.
