Something with leg animals

I was hunting the legendary buck in big valley and it got killed by a wolf shortly after before I could even get close to it some bounty hunters showed up and killed me I lost the deer but the game says I've already killed it but I don't have any of the resources from killing it how do I get my resources back?

If you get killed or otherwise lose the parts, they get automatically delivered to the trapper. You just don't get the payout.
