You do keep them both, but if you replace one it will go back to your horse. If you want to hold both you need to select in your weapon wheel either an empty slot or a slot with a weapon you don't mind putting back onto your horse.

Is there a danger of ending up with a load of useless 'junk' weapons on your inventory/wheel?  Or can you sell off one's you don't want (like the typical revolver)?  I've never really bothered with picking stuff up unless I didnt already have it or really want it (I love my raccoon hat!).

Good to know for sure.

I'm guessing there is a danger of wheel clog, then?

Yeah I guess, but it's only when accessing your horse. I'll check in a minute to see if there's any way to remove them.

This is also true of certain hats.  If you replace your hat with one of the collectible ones after defeating an enemy (or finding one in a special area), your old one goes to your saddlebag.

Yeah they show in your wardrobe too under stolen hats

Don't pick up a worn version of a weapon if you have already picked up non-worn version of the same weapon.

I picked up a decent cattleman revolver off a dead NPC and later on picked up a worn cattleman revolver after a mission, I dropped the sawn off shotgun when I picked up the worn cattleman because I knew the shotgun would just end up on my horse so I wouldn't lose it. I did however lose the decent non-worn cattleman instead.
