Unknown pelt on horse

After an unsuccessful trader delivery mission (delivery wagon crash) and failed secondary recovery attempt (pick up and deliver remaining bundles), I respawned and my horse now has a large pelt on the back that I did not place there. It is not identified as a particular animal and I can't sell it to the butcher. I can unload it and put it back, but I don't know what to do wiith it. Anyone have this experience, or know what the pelt is?

Random pelts do appear on your horse's randomly. 

I have a horse I have never put a pelt on, and it routinely has a pelt show up. It's not in inventory, and can't get rid of it.  It will go away soon. Just one of those things.

Yeah, I've had this happen as well. I just ignore it now or, if I happen to be close to a stable, I just go there and saddle up another horse and then switch back to the one I came in with. After that, the pelt is always gone.
