Farming whole Animals.

Does anybody else find it annoying that hunting for the trader role is so one-dimensional and counter-intuitive? The only thing that is worth a scratch is whole animals, ie deer. So you can't going on a little hunting mission picking up all kinds of critters and different types of skin, you just have to go out find a deer bring it back, go out find a deer bring it back, over and over again. Has the value of skins gone up at all since I last played? There's so many things to hunt and there's just no variety in farming for supplies whatsoever. I feel like a child could have devised a more rewarding and diverse experience than this.

Trader is a grind and a half even with the improved animal spawns.  The daily challenge of  six perfect large animals blows chunks unless you run into a fully spawned emerald ranch (or other such place) and call out your wagon.  And half the time the sizes don’t match the challenge.    Medium sized animals are supposed to be the ones you hang on your saddle,  but not always.

if you are reasonably close to your camp you can carry one deer and drag another with your lasso if you don’t feel like calling the wagon out.

if you need cash moonshiner is better, and collector is better than that.  Start a moonshine batch and then go collect.
you can grind some gold doing bounties but it’s not much, and the cash is even worse.  Dailies and resetting accomplishments are better for gold.

Granted non-skinned animal carcass will give you more materials. You can buy the Hunting Wagon & store a bunch of skins in there. Along with up to 5 large animals. I don't ride around with the Hunting Wagon. I just call the wagon throw the large animal  or pelt in the wagon & dismiss it & go back to riding my horse to hunt. I use the wagon as a storage bin. This way I'm not riding back & forth to camp with only one large animal on my horse.

You can also skin medium animals too. Ofc the non-skinned medium animal will give you more, like 3+ materials compared to just a skin that will give you 1 material. But you can carry up to 30 skins of one type of medium animal in your satchel. So 30 rabbit skins, 30 raccoon skins, 30 snake skins & so on. So perfect medium animal skins might only give you 1 material, but if you collect 20 or so skins that is already 20+ materials for you Trader role. This also works for poor, good, & perfect too. Meaning 30 poor rabbit skins, 30 good rabbit skins & 30 perfect rabbit skins, that you can carry in your satchel. I think 30 is the max for each category.

Same thing with Birds (Vulture, Hawk, Eagle & Condors to name a few) I get 3 feather each time I skin these birds (If they are good or perfect) & can carry up to 30 feathers for each bird. Most feather will give you 0.90 material for each feather. If you collect 30 feathers that equals to 27.0 materials just for 30 Vulture feathers. Now you add in the other birds Hawk, Eagles, Condors at 27.0 each. That's a total of 108.0 materials for all 4 bird types. I just ride around shooting poor, good, perfect medium animals / birds & skin them. If I see a perfect large animal (Buck, Deer, Pronghorn, Bighorn Sheep, Cougar, Panther), I will kill it & toss the animal in the back of the hunting wagon. Then continue on my hunting trip. All of it adds up.

Thanks for input. I didn't know about the amount of rabbit skins, snake skins you can store so that's a boon to me, also with feathers. I think my problem is that I really like the hunting aspect of the game, and I think it could be so much better. Maybe random world drops of certain valuable materials from animals, or coming across a really valuable specimen animal every once in  while. Or really rare critters that you only come across once in a blue moon. I know there's legendary animals but they are tied in with quests and are one-offs. I'm also disappointed that you can't craft clothes in the online version, or tame horses. I could go on. I'd love to see them expand hunting mechanics and making it something really complex and worth you time. I've just got visions of me chasing a squirrel from one end of the map to the other in order to gain an item that lets me craft a really rare type of hat.

There is a persistent rumour that they're going to drop the rancher role in an upcoming DLC, which would give you the horse taming.  Seems they'd be crazy not to, as they have already written the code for it all.  Am sure they'll also drop the legendary animals in a DLC, too.  Between those, lawman and Mexico there's a lot to look forward to.
