Hmm, sorry I forgot it wasn't a mission. Can't help anymore on this one I'm afraid, it worked first time for me and I didn't pay much attention to anything enough to be able to give you advice.

I can confirm proper fast travel is available later in the story mode.

What I do in those situations is die and restart the checkpoint.

Go round the back until you see the hole. It's above eye-level. You should be able to search if you go right up to the hole.

You tried reloading your saved game I presume?
