Without getting too technical. Imagine you have a gallon of water to move to another gallon jug. In between the gallon jug is a container that is just a bit smaller than 1 gallon that must be moved to first. you could just pour the amount into the middle just under a gallon jug then pour that into the gallon jug. Then pour the rest into the middle jug then into the gallon jug.

TCP packets can do just that. There would be an impact if you did the following as  with the jug of water.

Pour a cup of water out of the gallon jug then pour it into the middle jug. Then pour a cup of water out of the middle jug into the gallon jug. Repeat until all cups of water are in the last jug. The recommendation I made doesn't increase the number of packets by much if at all. I hope that explains it a bit better. If not, let me know and I can send private message with more detail as to how it works.

Naw, that's good.  I appreciate the advice and information.  The nitty-gritty of this networking stuff was never my strong point.  Thanks.

Not necessarily the PS or your network but maybe a bottleneck somewhere between your house and the servers location.

As a side note to frame rate drops: Video resolution and cpu overload can cause game lag and video frame rate drops. A hot playstation or xbox can cause CPU to overheat and may cause frame rate drops. Video resolution could be altered to minimize CPU (GPU) overload.

I hope that explains it a bit better. If not, let me know and I can send private message with more detail as to how it works.

Yes the CPU gets overclocked when playing this game when entering cities. No matter what console you have, this game causes frame rate drop big time and this is purely because R* has tons of motion capture, materials, and such that max out the CPU which causes everything to drop in frame and lag in general. I'm not a hardware professional, but I know basic knowledge of it because I am use to working with issues like this when my friend was building his PC to play the games he wanted without frame rate dropping so much. R* has to slim down the load of things going on to stop this frame rate drop OR wait till the PS5 comes out which has a much higher computing power rate than the PS4.

Update:

R* has finally responded to me with console boot up non-sense again. IT'S NOT THE CONSOLE, IT'S THE GAME THAT'S STRAINING THE CONSOLE. I then replied and asked that they addressed this issue to the developer team so this can be resolved (eventually lol). R* has 2 options with this frame rate problem, wait it out until the PS5 comes out so it can handle the computing power, or slim down the CPU overload within the game itself so that it can run butter smooth when entering large areas and cities.

I'm really working hard to put an end to this frame rate issue, because it's pretty much my only major complaint because I am very picky with frame rates. I can withstand a few frame rate drops, but not to the point where I enter a town like Valentine and the game is skipping like crazy which is ridiculous. I can't believe this frame rate drop issue was really passed by the game tester team at R*. If I was a game tester, this frame rate drop would of been a HUGE problem, I wouldn't of let it slide.

Update:

Rockstar has claimed to finally fix the frame rate drops in the patch notes of 1.10

We shall see if it's fixed :P

I made this acc just to thank you and people like u who r still pushing rockstar to fix this issue! I've been a pc gamer for over 15 years so I am pretty sensitive to fps drops especially frametime fluctuations. I am on the regular ps4 and it literally makes me dizzy every time I roam around in St. Denis or Valentine. How did this even pass QA is beyond me. I have 5 other frnds who're also on the base ps4 who have been suffering from these fps issues. So its not just me but just about everyone I know who's playing this game.

I expected way more ppl to complain abt this so R* would've given it more importance. The game is literally choking the console.

If I knew abt how bad the perf was gonna be, I'd have bought the ps4 pro to ease it a bit but that window has passed a long time ago.

P.S. Waiting for rdr2 PC version to release.

I've made several complaints to R* about this issue. Please help me do so by visiting the link and submit a ticket to the R* support:

I have been playing this game regularly and alot on my ps4-pro at 1080p. When I play at fake 4k it laggs and looks horrible. At 1080p it is as smooth as a 30 fps game can be, and that is still of course alot worse than a 60 fps experience.

But the other day I went to a friend and he played the game on a regular ps4 and it was horrible. I really could not stand the lagg and stutters, just a horrible experience. This game should not have been released on the base consoles in this state.

amen to that brother, I feel R* built RDR2 centered around the ps4 pro NOT the base ps4 so they just horribly downgraded everything to sell extra copies. IMHO a game like RDR2 should've only been made exclusive to Xbox One X and PS4 Pro as the experience on base consoles is pure sh*t. I feel bamboozled cuz I literally bought the console just to play this game else I'm playing everything else on my gaming rig

I have an original PS4 and don't have issues anywhere near as extreme as what's being described here. Makes me wonder if some are experiencing worse problems than others.

This is a pretty known issue for the regular PS4, I'm curious if it happens, but you barely notice. Some people like myself pay very close attention to detail. I've tried Red Dead Redemption 2 on my friends regular and the game still lags in the cities and towns.

Done brother. I hope they follow through

Thanks for helping in support of trying to fix this particular issue. I hope this gets resolved soon, if not, maybe once the PlayStation 5 comes out, the game will run smooth as butter if we upgrade. Not sure if they are going to fix this issue, but if they do, I'll be very much satisfied. I've been bothering R* about this for a while now.

UPDATE:

I've been going back and forth with R* about this for a while now on a support ticket with over 20 something messages and replies. I've talked to a bunch of Tier 2's and here is the final verdict of the ticket, which is kind disappointing, but hopefully they are really looking into the issue, and not sending me off to kick rocks.

I was actually talking to 5 different Tier 2's about this particular issue. I can safely confirm that the frame rate drop problem has been received and reported to R*
