Rdr2 graphics blurry PS4 Pro

My setup is PS4 Pro,  43" 1080p non hdr tv, boost off,  supersampling off, disc copy and version 1.02.

RDR2 at times looks great in various locations and with smooth frame rates in Valentine and Saint-Denis.

However there is also lots of times with various amounts of blur and out of focus look.

This more than 4K checkerboarding problems as all systems are experiencing blur issues.

I believe this game is presented as intended. R* went big for realism and the graphic effects are part of that.

The problem is that R* may think it is pretty  and Oscar worthy while lots of squinting gamers hate the look

Many gamers, like myself, hate anything that adds blur and washed out colors to a game.

The fix is to provide setting options to disable  effects like dof, camera blur , and god rays.

I think you are right about people being hypnotized by the positive aspects of RDR2. This is like being on honeymoon with your new, not-that-pretty, but healthy bride. You are blind to any flaws. For the time being. People romanticize their gaming experiences to extraordinary levels and refuse to acknowledge any shortcomings. But eventually the honeymooners will come around. Sadly it will be too late.

R* understand the psychology of this very well which is why they are in no hurry to release a patch. Not even to fix the HDR, which is less a case of perception but a technical fudge job. It is literally FAKE HDR (deliberately implemented in that way) and somehow, inexplicably, they are getting away with it. And I blame the major media channels like Digital Foundry for not making a bigger fuss over this.

Supersampling and HDR is vastly different things!

What you refer to as "supersampling" is a technique where the same visuals are layered in order to give the impression of a higher resolution image. Or when a small image is blown up and the missing visual information added using some clever wizardry called checkerboard rendering.

HDR on the other hand has to do with increased color range.

And if you got to start back to a dollar and lose everything that you built hell, go to one of the locations and do the money glitch or the gold bar glitch and Bald stuff that she had back. I used to have to go through the story line a little bit, but Hailey said, you stop back pretty quick.

Had the disc version since the day it came out. Blurry mess. 

Aber ich denke so soll es auch erstmal bleiben. Microsoft gibt momentan extrem gas was werbung für die xbox one x als beste konsole angeht, siehe fallout 76 etc. Alles best played on xbox. Die sony konsole soll einen drauf bekommen. Nur die exklusiv titel sehen gut aus.

I can agree with that.  It's why i switched from PS to the xbox 360 way back when.

I bought a One X, even though i have not bought RDR2 for it, holy sh*t its one impressive machine, even the foliage in the enhanced Witcher 2 version is better than the foliage in RDR2,its crazy. when RDR2 goes down in price im sure i will get it. the old Gears of War games look so good with the enhancements too. very happy with my purchase.

With the last update odyssey looks much better, only some clumsy animations destroying the immersion a bit. Witcher 3 looks superb on PS4 Pro. I can only tell it. This are issues to push the selling of X Box One X. This Game degrades the power of a ps4 pro.

Ja ich habe auch das Gefühl das Sony einen drauf bekommen soll. Das Backprogramm der X soll jetzt noch zusätzlich einen großen Fehlers Sonys aufdecken. Kein richtiiger Support für ältere Spiele. Ich glaube ehrlich gesagt, mittlerweile nicht mehr, das es das letzte Spiel sein wird was der X deutliche Vorteile bescheren wird. Desweiteren glaube ich mittlerweile an einen Release der PS5 vor der Scarletkonsole. Viertel Jahr früher denke ich.

To be honest, I do not think anymore that it will be the last game that will bring X significant benefits. Furthermore, I now believe in a release of the PS5 in front of the Scarlet console. A quarter of a year earlier, I think.

Sorry, I'm really frustrated and therefore write in German. Microsoft and Sony gambling with us :(

Maybe it's even wanted by Sony to drive the sale of the PS5. There's definitely more power in the game, and not just only Rockstar

I finally installed the game a few days ago.  I was really disturbed by some of the seriously bad reports being written here.  I did not want to be disappointed by the game I was so looking forward to.

I tried retrospectively to use the spoiler option, but failed because I am not very bright, so apologies for the long post!

 

Exiting the snowy prologue I had a chance to see the colour and definition for the first time.  I usually play in "Movie mode" on my Phillips Ambilight, however with this game (HDR on), I play in "game mode" which really brings up the colours.  Whether the HDR is fake or not, to my eyes it looks much more realistic and atmospheric with the muted tones of having HDR on.  With HDR off, every thing is too colourful, almost cartoonish.  It does take a little while to set HDR calibration, as during bright days it seemed a little dull, so I upped the calibration and it looks beautiful now.  

Night time is quite bright, however anyone who has been out at night under a bright moon knows that it is surprisingly capable of providing illumination, and can sometimes seem almost like a dull/overcast day level of light. 

HDR conclusion: "fake" or not the colouring in this game is natural, and capable of some stunningly realistic lighting effects and sense of atmosphere.  Better on.

Blur:  I understand some of the issues you guys have mentioned now.  Visuals at mid to long range do have a hazed appearance to them.  Certain cut scenes have blur on characters faces etc.  This is because the "crisp" face is the one the art director wants you to focus on.  

I would encourage any western fan to watch The Ballad of Lefty Brown, one of my favourite films.  Take note of the "blur" - there is an early scene, in the first 5 minutes, where a character front of screen is perfectly in focus, while the guy holding a gun to his back is blurred, exactly as in RDR2.  Regardless of what technology Rockstar have or haven't used, I believe this is an artistic choice: watch the film, and see the blurring and muted colours so common to western movies.

Really it is an issue which I think people are misunderstanding, and getting worked up about, if you don't focus on the blur all the time, and accept it is deliberate, you can enjoy the game.

Now before people call me troll, or tell me not to write here as I'm making them angry (lol), I do have one very valid point that may help.

Sickness: Turn Boost Mode off!  I had eye strain and felt nauseous as soon as I left the snowy prologue - like the game was overfocusing my eyes, and I was cross eyed.  It made me feel sick.  I had HORRENDOUS frame stuttering...I was so disappointed, I knew something was wrong...so I turned Boost Mode off, and the frame rate now is smooth, what's more, no more sickness or eye strain.  

Perspective This game is clearly made to be played in 1st person.  This makes the visuals so much smoother, when turning your head etc, changing direction.  It is not realistic or immersive to play 3rd person!  I think the game is designed for 1st person, I tried 3rd, and the controls felt "clunky" as people report, and spinning the camera looked far worse.

I won't write any more, I hope some people consider my points valid, and that my tip about Boost Mode helps.  Watch the film, and understand that blur and muted colours are very much a feature of western movies, stop getting so worked up and just enjoy the game, which I think is beautiful and incredible.

to GMak81, no it has nothing to do with artistic choice. This is a game and not a film.. For cutscenes it is acceptable, but not on horseriding scenes or gunfights on feets or horse. It is nearly unplayable with the blur. No this game is not created for first person. No rockstar games game is created for first person. All games of rockstar are created for third person viewing. No it is not better to play in first person. I can´t play this game in first person. On horseback first gives you a bad headache and a nausea feeling. Do you see any scene in earlier gameplay scenes in the first person perspective? Noooo...

 

The smoother gameplay changes nothing on the bad blur issues. In the most scenes the game is smooth enough that is not the problem. It is the god damned blur.

We are talking not about the hdr issue right here. This blur exists without hdr and with hdr. This game has so many other bugs. I can´t understand why this game is so hyped by the major magazines and by the most of the users. No answer in the online press of any patch nothing. I hope a bigger wave will come that want that rockstar games fix that issues when the online multiplayer comes out. No hardcore multiplayer gamer want play this game with this heavy blurring mist in the game. No I´m sure. For fast actiongameplay you need a clean graphic. Look to PUBG or Battlefield or something else. With this blur it is not playable.

We play a game and not cinematic cine style western movie with 24 frames per second. THis works on movies but not on games.

rockstar ****ed us alot.. and they still don't care abut fixing this ****ing ugly mess of a game

First 20 mins of odyssey with cinematic cutscenes. Look charakters are sharp, landscape uses a lot of depth of field. Oops wrong video. I found no good quality video to the witcher 3. But look how all is arranged in odyssey, with cinematic cutscenes.

The video is older. The graphic looks now more polished since a few patches

I think the 20 mins of the spiderman game is a good example how good a game can look with motion blur and clean graphics with checkerboard resolution. I put two videos in the spoiler.

I really don't know what the issue is with the graphics but this isn't the only place people are complaining. I am on an older PS4 and don't see any issues.

Die ps5 wird vor der scarlet kommen. Das ist microsoft‘s strategie um endlich den konsolenkrieg zu gewinnen. Denn: Nachdem sony ihre ps5 rausgebracht hat, wird genau das gleiche passieren wie mit der ps4 pro. 

Die xbox scarlet wird technisch viel besser als die ps5 und das einzige was die ps5 dann noch zu bieten hat sind exclusives.

So ein großes Spiel wie RDR2 wird sowieso remastered und dann wird es zeit für eine xbox, leider..

 

The ps5 will come out before the scarlet. That’s microsofts strategy to finally win the console war. Because after sonys ps5 came out, the same will happen as with the ps4 pro.

The xbox scarlet will be technically more powerful than ps5 and the only thing the ps5 can offer is exclusives.

A great game like rdr2 will be remastered for sure and at this point it’s time for a xbox, unfortunately..

You don't see an issue? Either you are blind, or you have not compared the visuals with XBOX ONE X, or you have not done any research into the matter before coming on here questioning everyone complaining about the issue as if we are somehow imagining it? 

The very real "Issue" is that the image on PS4 Pro looks very blurry compared to the XBOX ONE X version. Ironically, the game looks better on base PS4 than it does on PS4 Pro because on the Pro, they are using a crappy checkerboard rendering technique that makes the image look blurry.

Yes, it would seem like a plausible theory. But how and why would Sony be OK with this? Because if we suspect this to be the case, Sony must know a lot more!

Come on... grow up! It's seems that sharpness is the only thing that matters for you guys. That's insane. I have also switched to HZD and, aside from the reality crisp graphics, it's doesn't look anything like RDR2. RDR is WAY better, more real, more detailed and way more jaw-dropping. I acknowledge that RDR2 is indeed blurry though.
