So what happens when you attract attention around the camp?

I dont understand this mechanic, please explain this to me. So I wanted to rob someone outside the camp (to check controls/gameplay mechanic) and robbery  has gone terribly wrong so I had to shoot the guy and there was a prompt telling me that I cant commit crimes outside the camp or something like this, the camera turn into sky and after few seconds I was back in camp - did the game rewind and my kill got nullified or kill was still recorded and time fast forwarded and I got spawned in the camp, did I die? When somebody shoots me camera turns to the sky and I spawn nearby and loose some cash but I dont loose cash when I attract attention too close to the camp. Could someone please explain these mechanics too me?

I think this similar to dying or failing a mission. The camp is supposed to be hidden and if you bring unwanted attention around it, the game sort of resets a check point. Happened to me when I was jumped by some O'Driscoll boys outside of my camp. I was riding my horse close to the homestead and a prompt said something along the lines of "keep attention away from the camp" and it did the same thing you described.

That would make good sense - but I'd expect more of an in game explanation.  One of the gripes I have with the game so far is just how much stuff (settings, mechanics etc) is left unexplained or without clear details.

I was curious on this as well.  I was leaving camp when some bounty hunters stated approaching me, I was being out gunned, so I took off next thing I know a message popped up saying something about can't let bounty hunters close to camp. (sh*t.. they were practically at my camp when I ran into them).  but yeah same thing, the camera turn into sky and after few seconds I was back in camp.
