Manual saves

Does anyone else do this to try and get golds once you get better weapons, higher dead-eye, etc? If so do you create a manual save for each mission or just one save slot and overwrite it? I’m looking for the most efficient way to keep all my weapons, etc to give me the best chance to get golds, and reload that save rather than choosing the option to retry mission through the process option when I hit pause

When eplaying missions it makes no difference at all what your current health, stamina or Dead Eye level is, not what inventory of tonics you have. 

When you retry a mission using “retry” or the chapter select screen you go back in with a predetermined level of everything including dead eye, health, weapons, tonics etc, etc. 

If you want the best chance of getting gold on every mission then you need to do what I do. 

Before you start every mission make a new save. Do the mission, see what the goals are and the reload your save and do it again. Keep doing this until you get gold, then make that your main autosave file and delete the other one.

Once I get gold using this method how do I make that save file the main auto save file?

Just delete the other save and check under settings>general that autosave is turned on. And it will become your main, active save file.

So once I get a gold I delete the manual save for that mission, correct and I’ll be able to go to the next mission and follow the same process by having the auto save file allowing me to progress in the game?

Once you get the gold you delete the save that is in the autosave spot (your original save where you failed to get the gold).

Then just carry on with the game and turn autosave on. That way the manual save you made becomes your main save and you just play as normal. 

All you are doing is creating a save point prior to entering a mission so you can retry it as many times as you like with the exact number of tonics, health items, bullets etc rather than being forced to retry it with what R* deems appropriate.

@Limey77 thank you for clarifying-and the auto save spot is in the first save spot when I go to do a manual save I assume? And I wasn’t able to do a manual save in the very first mission of the game-did you have that issue also?

I haven't tried to be honest, I got gold on that the first time, so I don't know. I guess it would make sense though as it is the very first mission. So I guess I'd keep replaying that one normally until you can make a manual save.

One other good idea is that once you gold all of the Colter missions, make a manual save after you set up in camp near Valentine for the first time and keep it. That way if you ever want to restart the game for whatever reason then you won't have to do all the tutorial missions once again.

@Limey77 that’s a good idea 😀 and as far as the autosave part of my question-is that the one in the first save spot when I go to make a manual save I assume? Just want to make sure I do this correct 😀

Yes, the top slot is the autosave spot.

Exactly, they're also time stamped so you will always be deleting the earliest one.

@Limey77thank you for all your help-i do have another question (and this might just be me overthinking it)-following this system, does it allow for getting weapons in later chapters and going back to earlier ones to get gold? (Ex: getting a gun in chapter 4 and going back and loading a save from chapter 2?)  or just acquiring weapons as I go and saving before each mission and using those weapons to try and get gold?

No you can't do that at all. Even after finishing the game and using the inbuilt retry method you only have what R* deem suitable for the stage in the game that you were at. There's no way around that, sadly. Many of the missions would be much easier if you could take abilities and resources from later in the game back to.

@Limey77 yes it would and I thought that might be the case but just wanted to verify 😀 so for each mission in a chapter then I’ll do a manual save to try and get gold like you described doing

@Limey77 so I’ll have the weapons I acquire along the way when I do a manual save as well as level of health, deadeye, etc then-better than having a basic load out  😀 and golds should get easier the further i get into the game due to having more accurate weapons and such

Yes exactly, the main reason to do it this way rather than using the retry button or going in through the replay chapter in the pause menu is resources. Often a gold will require you to be 80% or 90% accurate so you need to use Dead Eye.

If you have the Satchel of the East you can carry 99 chewing tobacco or snake oil or whatever so you can basically stay in Dead Eye all the time. But if you do a mission with 99 chewing tobacco and don't get the gold then try and hit the retry button you'll restart with zero chewing tobacco, making it much harder to be very accurate or stay in Dead Eye for long.

If you save beforehand and then reload that save as I've suggested then you can retry it as many times as you like with 99 chewing tobacco (for example). Same goes for poison throwing knives, snake oil, food etc.

As another example, there's one mission in ch5 that requires you to do something within 4 seconds which is practically impossible without Dead Eye, so if you retry that mission and lose the ability to keep Dead Eye active then you won't get the gold. But if you save beforehand with 4 chewing tobacco, you'll easily nail it.

As a side note on the mission where you have to kill the 3 o”drscolls within the same dead eye, were you able to complete the whole mission within the 15 and a half minutes? If so, how did you do it? The last time I tried playing that mission, that was the only obhective I didn’t complete-the time limit objective

Yes, I was, you need to skip every cutscene, including the one where Dutch tells you to search one building, Bill to search another one. Plus you need to be quick catching Kieran and getting back to camp. It's impossible if you don't skip every cutscene possible.

@Limey77 sorry to beat a dead horse with this but I ran into an issue last night where I did a manual save before a mission, then it Asked me if I wanted to overwrite the auto save-I chose yes and I lost the gold medal 😥 if I chose no, then I should have had that manual save still and deleted the auto save file correct? I want to make sure I don’t have this happen in the future

autosave doesn't affect your manual save.  Manually save then restore to that save point, not the autosave point.

@Limey77 is there a way to tell if you get the gold before choosing to overwrite the auto save with the manual save? I did the mission where I broke Micah out of jail and thought i got the requirements met so when it asked to overwrite the autosave with the manual one I did before starting it I chose yes. I ended up not getting the gold so now if i want to try again I have to go thru it with the basic loadout. Do you know if there is a way to if you meet the gold requirements before having to choose to overwrite or not? I’d prefer obviously to do missions with the guns and supplies I’ve acquired up to that point -and what I mean by meeting the requirements is going to a screen where I can see if I met them-I got a strategy guide so I’ll know what the requirements for each is before starting it
