Saltyballs
Camp around the N or the E in New Hannover and save your game, head west toward the Dakota river on foot and creep around the rocks that surround the river banks. Woodpeckers, Robins, Cardinals, Sparrows, Bluejays, Songbirds, Oriolles and even the odd eagle or too will spawn randomly on the tops of them. I personally like following the river north as it seems to have more spawn points. Protip: Using your binoculars usually causes them to fly away (stupid mechanic imo) so just use a rifle scope or aim your bow to find out what bird it is.

I've tried hitting them with the small animal arrow, and the smaller song birds are really hard or i'm a horrible shot. you get no feathers or nothing from them anyway, take em out easy after studying

I was starting to think that was the case, but stopped caring enough to bother figuring it out.

Tried this last night, sitting at Emerald Station waiting for the train. I saw a bird fly and land on the street sign just north of the station, walked my horse back south a ways so not to spook it. Pulled out the rifle and scoped it to study and it immediately flew off. Few minutes later another bird landed, used the binocs and sat there to see how long it would take to scare it off. Bird sat on the sign until someone road by in a wagon and spooked it. maybe depends on the bird? scarlet tanager was what i was watching.
Saltyballs
Yeah it's possible it's species related, I know for certain the Robbins spook when viewed through binoculars. For me I have more luck with my scope or bow than with binoculars with most species.

There is one stranger mission which requires a perfect carcass and I don't think you can get that with the varmint rifle. Bow + small game arrow + deadeye works pretty good. I've found that you need pretty open areas in order to hunt the little bastards. The plains around Emerald Ranch is perfect and so is the plains around Blackwater if you have access to it. Also, it has to be daytime and sunny/overcast.

I can't remember what the option is called but you press X and it basically gives you the feathers and meat. But don't take it apart if you're doing the hunting requests. All the stuff you mail must be carcasses. Happy holidays, feller!
