Chapter 5 Missions And Gold Medals Guide

Chapter 5 is among the most unique story chapters in the Red Dead Redemption 2 story mode, as you will have lost all your weapons and your horse, and you will have to deal with enemies in the first few missions of the chapter with extremely limited resources. This doesn't last long, thankfully, and you will soon be back in America to reclaim everything that you have lost after the failed bank heist at the end of Chapter 4.

Chapter 5 is among the shortest story mode chapters, as it only features 8 main story missions, with an additional mission that can be completed in either this chapter or Chapter 6. Like for all the other story mode chapters, these missions all come with requirements that must be cleared in order to obtain a Gold Medal. These requirements can be cleared during the first playthrough or during repeated ones, which can be started by accessing the Progress section in the main menu. Repeated playthroughs, however, make you play the mission with a limited weapon loadout and no tonics, so it's much more difficult to obtain Gold Medals this way. It's much better to make a manual save before each story mission, play through it once to learn about the requirements and then reload the save to play it again with all your weapons and items.

Welcome to the New World

Welcome to the New World is the first story mission in Chapter 5 and the 57th mission in the Red Dead Redemption 2 story mode. It's unlocked automatically after completing the Banking, the Old American Art mission.

At the very beginning of the mission, Arthur will wake up on a beach, completely alone. As soon as you regain control of your character, continue walking until you spot smoke from a campfire. Head over to the source of the smoke to meet back with Dutch and the others, who all have managed to survive.

The moment will turn sour quickly, however, as Arthur and the rest of the gang will be captured by a patrol. All of them will be chained and forced to go together with the soldiers.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must not fall behind while walking with the chain gang. This requirement is extremely simple to clear, as all you have to do is to continue walking and follow the line. After a short while, rebels will appear and free all of the captured. Arthur will take advantage of the situation to grab a pistol and help the rebels deal with the soldiers.

To get the Gold Medal, you must get 10 headshots. You will start with a full Dead Eye bar so activate the ability, mark enemies' heads and let loose. As you have no tonics, you may have to be more careful than usual while using Dead Eye, as once the bar is depleted, you can only restore it by performing well-placed shots on enemies.

Reinforcements will eventually arrive, and Arthur and the rest of the gang will have to follow the rebels' leader to a new position, which you will have to defend. Continue going for headshots to clear the requirement for the Gold Medal, and always keep an eye on the sides of the hill, as enemies will try to catch you unaware. After the fight has gone on for a short while, enemies will start fleeing: use this chance to get some more easy headshots in.

Once the enemy has retreated, you will be introduced to the situation in Guarma by Hercule, the rebels' leader. After the cutscene is over, the mission will be complete.

A Kind and Benevolent Despot

A Kind and Benevolent Despot is the second story mission in Chapter 5 and the 58th mission in the story mode. It becomes available after completing the Welcome to the New World mission earlier in the chapter. To begin the mission, you must speak with Dutch at the marked location on the map.

While most of the gang made it out safe, Javier didn't, and he is a prisoner of Colonel Fussar, the despot ruling the island. Dutch has no intention of leaving Javier to his fate and comes up with a plan to infiltrate the fortress and rescue the fellow outlaw.

Once you are done talking with Dutch, follow him to get near a cave where a contact of his is waiting to take the two to the fortress. Follow the contact for a short while until you reach a metal door. Help Dutch open it and proceed to get into the fortress. Here, you will see a cutscene of Colonel Fussar interrogating Javier.

As there are way too many enemies for Arthur and Dutch to make it out alive, they must create a distraction. Follow Dutch and kill enemies as prompted. Always remember to go for a stealthy approach, otherwise, you will fail the mission.

Once inside of the sugar refinery, wait for the guards to move out of your way to kill them silently together with Dutch. After they are dead, it's time to sabotage the refinery: head over to the location marked on the map and open the valve when told to, then close the shutters and slash the sack in the east side of the room. Rejoin Dutch, head out of the refinery and wait for the distraction to do its job.

Once guards start rushing to the refinery, go to the cages and release Javier. Sadly, guards are already back and you will have to shoot your way through.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must get Javier to safety in under 2 minutes and get 10 headshots. During this sequence, Dutch will carry Javier, and as long as you stay close to them, they will continue moving toward safety. Guards will be coming after you, obviously, so you'll have plenty of chances to get headshots. Don't abuse Dead Eye, however, as the timer doesn't slow down when it's active: since there are no accuracy requirements for the Gold Medal, you can afford to miss a couple shots. Also, always make sure to take out the enemies that Dutch will point out from time to time, as they are in your way and will likely kill him if left unattended for too long.

More enemies will be waiting for you outside the fortress, so continue shooting them down and follow Dutch to make sure to clear the time requirement for the mission. Eventually, Dutch will ask you to stay behind and cover his escape. At this point, you will have cleared the 2 minutes requirement, so feel free to use Dead Eye as much as you want to deal with the remaining pursuers. Once they are all dead, Arthur will catch up with Dutch and Javier at the camp, and the mission will be complete.

Savagery Unleashed

Savagery Unleashed is the third story mission in Chapter 5 and the 59th mission in the Red Dead Redemption 2 story mode. It's unlocked after completing the Welcome to the New World mission earlier in the chapter. To begin the mission, you must head over to the location marked with the question mark on the map.

The main mission objective will be to rescue a group of slaves that has recently escaped the sugar factory. They are being pursued by Fussar's men, however, so there may not be much time before they are killed. And the killing seems to have already begun when Arthur reaches the marked area, as he sees a body hanging from a tree. He is then shot with a blow dart, which makes him lose consciousness quickly.

Fussar's men manage to capture Arthur after he loses consciousness, and he will wake up in captivity. Not one to give up easily, the outlaw manages to find a way to escape. With your help, of course.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must complete it within 5 minutes and 40 seconds. The time requirement is rather strict, so you must be extremely fast, especially in the following sequence.

As soon as you can control Arthur again, look at your hands and try to break free. Once the camera goes back to third-person view, start rocking back and forth with the left analog stick. Do this a few times to fall on the ground and break the chair. As you get up, grapple the guard and beat him to death. A cutscene will play, which you must skip to clear the time requirement for the Gold Medal.

Red-Dead-Redemption-2_20181127223601-800

During the cutscene, Arthur releases two slaves, Leon and Baptiste, who will then head to another location nearby to free the other slaves together with the outlaw. During this sequence, always crouch and wait for guards to pass by as Leon tells you. After a short while, you will reach an area where three other workers are being held.

To get the Gold Medal for the mission, you must release all the workers within 4 seconds. This is incredibly easy to perform with the help of Dead Eye: activate the special ability as soon as you see the workers, and shoot at the ropes. The noise will attract the guards' attention, so Arthur and his companions will have to fight their way out.

To get the Gold Medal for the mission, you must get a total of 8 headshots. As the area has very good visibility and cover spots, it shouldn't be too hard to get them, even without Dead Eye. Whatever you do, however, make sure to take care of the sniper on the roof first, as he can deal a lot of damage in a single shot.

Once all the guards have been killed, a cutscene will play. Make sure to skip it to complete the mission without wasting any additional time to clear the time requirement for the Gold Medal.

Hell Hath No Fury

Hell Hath No Fury is the fourth story mission in Chapter 5 and the 60th mission in all of the story mode. The mission begins automatically after completing both A Kind and Benevolent Despot and Savagery Unleashed missions.

With the help of the members of the Van der Linde gang, the Guarma rebels have caused a lot of trouble for Colonel Fussar, and the dictator has had enough of them. For this reason, he will mount a massive attack on Cinco Torres right when Arthur and Dutch are discussing with Hercule about a way off the island.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must complete it with at least 70% accuracy. As enemies are going to be far from you most of the times, make sure to use Dead Eye as much as possible.

Right after the beginning of the assault, you will have to take care of the enemies coming from the beach to the south of your position. After a short while, Hercule will ask you for help in getting the cannot into position. More enemies will be coming on the beach, so you must head down to prevent more from coming.

Chapter-5-1-800x450.jpg

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must prevent 4 boats from reaching the shore. Make sure to not waste Dead Eye while fighting enemies from the battlements, as you need it to kill all the enemies in at least four boats. The first ones will be coming from the west, while the remaining ones from the east. It's very difficult to prevent all boats from landing while keeping accuracy high so just avoid four from doing so to clear the Gold Medal requirement and then deal with the enemies as they get closer.

After taking care of all the boats, you will regroup with Dutch and Hercule. The rebel leader will inform you that the cannon must be used to deal with the warship, as Cinco Torres won't stand for long under the heavy fire. Follow him around until you reach the cannon at the top of the building.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must destroy the Naval ship without missing a single shot. This isn't particularly difficult to do, just make sure to aim a little above the ship to compensate for the drop. Continue shooting, and reloading as needed, and the warship will eventually be destroyed. At this point, the mission will be complete.

Paradise Mercifully Departed

Paradise Mercifully Departed is the fifth story mission in Chapter 5 and the 61st mission in the Red Dead Redemption 2 story mode. This mission starts automatically after completing the Hell Hath No Fury mission.

Hercule's plan to let Arthur, Dutch, and the other outlaws escape from Guarma is ready to go, only that Colonel Fussar has no intention of letting them off easily. He has captured the captain of the ship and set up guns to fire on the outlaws if they try to escape. As staying on Guarma is not an option, Arthur has to set out to release the captain and destroy the artillery.

At the beginning of the mission, Hercule will lead you to where guns have been mounted. Sneak behind the two guards and kill them silently together with Micah to clear the first requirement for this mission's Gold Medal. After this has been done, plant the explosives on the first gun and watch it getting blown sky high.

Having made so much noise, stealth is no longer possible, so it's time to pull your weapons out and start killing enemies. To get the Gold Medal, you must get 25 headshots, which is not to difficult to do, as there are a lot of enemies in this mission.

Chapter-5-2-800x422.jpg

Follow the indications given by your companions to complete the following sequences. Always make sure to kill snipers as soon as possible, since they can deal a lot of damage. Once Micah is done with the second gun, Dutch and Arthur will start heading to the captain's location to release him. Continue killing enemies with headshots, and use Dead Eye as necessary: there is no accuracy requirement for the Gold Medal, but it can be difficult to get headshots due to the poor night visibility.

Once inside the building, you will be assaulted by a man hiding behind the door. Dutch will prevent him from killing Arthur, but everything will result in a standstill. At this point, Fussar will make his appearance, and it seems like things are not going to be easy. As soon as you can control Arthur again, look to the right and left and then at the captain, who will point out a gun. Kick it and the captain will take care of the enemies for you.

After the captain has been released, it's time to get on the ship. To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must escort the captain to the boat within 1 minute and 45 seconds. Always make sure to kill enemies as quickly as possible, as the captain will not move until all in the vicinity have been killed. After a short while, Fussar will start shooting at you from the last artillery gun: head to the left to man the cannon and shoot him down with a single shot.

After Fussar has been killed, Arthur and this fellow gang members will finally be able to leave Guarma. Mission complete.

Dear Uncle Tacitus

Dear Uncle Tacitus is the sixth story mission in Chapter 5 and the 62nd mission in the story mode. This mission begins automatically after completing the previous mission, Paradise Mercifully Departed.

The ship will drop Arthur, Dutch, and the others at the Van Horn Trading Post, to the north of the previous camp. The members of the Van der Linde gang need to rendezvous with the others who were left behind and so they must head back to Shady Belle.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must complete it within 8 minutes. This time limit isn't particularly strict, so you should have no trouble clearing it, but you still need to be as quick as possible, since you have to cover some distance on horseback.

Chapter-5-3-800x450.jpg

As soon as you can control Arthur again, get on the marked horse and follow the waypoint to Shady Belle. Here, you will find that the rest of the gang has left the camp, but not without leaving a hint indicating the location of the next camp. Pick up the letter addressed to Uncle and read it to learn that the rest of the gang has gone to Lakay in Lemoyne.

Right after you are done reading the letter, a Pinkerton patrol will arrive. You can kill them easily, but not only it will make you waste to much time, but also you must leave Shady Belle without being detected by them to get the Gold Medal. Just wait for the first Pinkerton to enter the house, sneak behind his back, get on your horse and ride to Lakay as hard as you can. Once you arrive, search the yellow marked area it to find Pearson, Abigail, and Sadie, all safe and sound. Once you have regrouped with your companions, the mission will be complete.

Fleeting Joy

Fleeting Joy is the seventh story mission in Chapter 5 and the 63rd mission in the story mode. The mission begins automatically after completing the Dead Uncle Tacitus mission.

Trouble is far from over for the Van der Linde gang, as the new hideout will be discovered by the Pinkertons, who are determined in finishing the job they started in Saint Denis. For this reason, you will be fighting a lot of them during this mission.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must complete it without taking any health items. Dead Eye items are ok as long as they don't restore the Health bar and core. Since you will have to fight a lot of enemies, including a Gatling Gun, completing the mission without using tonics will be difficult if you are not careful and stay behind cover at all times.

Right after regaining control of Arthur, follow Sadie around until you reach one of the houses near the shore, enter the trapdoor and continue following her until you get to another house nearby. Get into position and watch Dead Eye getting activated automatically.

Fleeting-Joy-800x450.jpg

To get the Gold Medal for the mission, you must kill two Pinkertons during the Dead Eye ambush. This is very easy to achieve as there's a huge amount of enemies in the area. Just make sure you take advantage of the free Dead Eye to kill the man using the Gatling Gun to avoid getting damaged too much for the remainder of the mission. Once the free Dead Eye ends, use a Dead Eye tonic to restore the bar and activate it again to further reduce the number of enemies.

Once enough enemies have been killed, Arthur will be told to push to the north to deal with incoming enemies. There will be more reinforcements coming from all sides, so make sure to always move behind cover and use Dead Eye to kill as many enemies as possible. Don't focus on the shooting too much, as conserving health is the most important thing to do.

Once the final wave of reinforcements has been dealt with, it's time to truly strike back. Dutch will tell Arthur to man the Gatling Gun to finish the Pinkertons for good.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must get five headshots with the Gatling Gun and get at least 70% accuracy with it. This is more difficult than it sounds like since you will be forced to use the weapon very carefully. Take your time to aim to get your headshots and kill enemies, making sure to stop shooting at a target the moment it's been killed.

Reinforcements will be coming from all sides, and Sadie and Dutch will notify you of the direction the enemies are coming from. After the final wave has been cleared, the mission will be complete.

A Fork in the Road

A Fork in the Road is the eight story mission in Chapter 5 and the 64th mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 story mode. The mission is unlocked after completing the A Fleeting Joy mission by heading into Saint Denis.

This mission is rather simple, as it's just a sequence of cutscenes that will play out when Arthur reaches Saint Denis following the end of the previous mission. Even though it's a very straightforward mission with no combat, there is still a Gold Medal to obtain.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must complete it within 3 minutes and 5 seconds. For this reason, you must skip all cutscenes in the mission, so make a manual save before entering Saint Denis to complete the mission regularly and then replay it to get the Gold Medal.

A-Fork-in-the-Road-800x450.jpg

After Arthur collapses on the street, a cutscene will play. Skip it and head to the doctor as soon as you regain control of the character. Once inside, speak with the receptionist, then head inside the office and sit down. Another cutscene will play, where Arthur is told that he has tuberculosis and that he doesn't have much to live: his reaction to the news that he is sick and dying will also be different, depending on your current honor rating. Skip this cutscene and then head out and walk away from the doctor. Arthur will hallucinate and will have the vision of a deer if his Honor rating is good and of a wolf if the rating is bad.

After walking a short while, the waypoints will appear on the map again, and the mission will be complete.

That’s Murfee Country

That’s Murfee Country is the ninth story mission in Chapter 5 and the 65th in the story mode. This mission becomes available right after completing the Fleeting Joy mission. To begin it, you must speak with Dutch at the hideout in Lakay.

The assault on Lakay by the Pinkertons made it clear that the gang has to move again. Dutch will send Arthur and Charles to scout an area beyond Butcher Creek, but the area is the territory of the Murfree Brood gang, as Charles warns you.

To get the Gold Medal for this mission, you must complete it without taking any health item, complete it with 85% accuracy and get 15 headshots. The Murfrees are pretty aggressive and love to get up close and personal, so you must be extra careful when dealing with them later on during the mission.

Follow Charles to the north for a bit until he asks you if you want to proceed by canoe or by horse. Choose to go by your horse, as going by canoe isn't any faster and you also won't have access to your saddlebags.

Following the auto-travel sequence, you will get close to a Murfree camp. Crouch and follow Charles until you are asked to kill one of the gang members: go for a headshot with a silent weapon like the bow or the throwing knives. Once the two men have been killed, continue following Charles until you reach a cave that would be perfect for the Van der Linde gang to use as a hideout.

Murfree-Country-800x450.jpg

At this point, Charles will ask you if you want to use dynamite to flush the Murfrees out or continue being stealthy. You must choose the second option for a few reasons: first, as already stated, the Murfree are aggressive, and will rush you down with melee weapons that can kill you in a single hit; second, there are a lot of enemies, and getting the headshots required for the Gold Medal can become difficult.

After you have chosen the stealthy approach, kill the enemy in the front of the cave and enter. Continue on and kill enemies as required. Eventually, you will be spotted and will have to fight the Murfree head on. During this fight, always make sure to continue checking the mini-map, as the tunnels make it easy for enemies to flank you. As for the best weapon, any shotgun is a very good choice here, as the Murfree love to rush straight at you.

Once all of the enemies have been killed, continue on inside the cave to find a hostage. Use the defuse dialogue option and then open the cage.

To get the Gold Medal, you must deliver Meredith to her mother within 2 minutes. Skip the cutscene that plays after saving her and ride as hard as you can to Annesburg. Once you reach the marked area, skip the cutscene to complete the mission and clear the Gold Medal requirement.
