How long after the release date will multiplayer be available?

Recommended Posts

The only multiplayer game I've ever bought on the actual release date is GTA 5.  I just seem to remember the multiplayer not being available right away.  I'll definitely be finishing single player before jumping into multiplayer anyhow, but was curious if there is typically a gap between the release date and availability of multiplayer.

Grand Theft Auto V was the first Rockstar title where there was a gap between the initial release of the game and it's multiplayer component, I don't know whether they'll do the same for Red Dead Redemption II.

With GTA V, the gap insured people were familiar with the controls, map and mechanics before they played with others. It also might have been done to provide time to make changes and fixes for GTA Online even though GTA Online was a mess at launch anyway.

One of the problems with releasing GTA Online later was that everyone jumped on at the same time, when you release SP and MP side by side your gonna have some people go straight to SP and some people go straight to MP meaning there's less stress on MP. Hopefully Rockstar realize this and release them side by side.

Thanks for your help.  For reasons you stated about GTA, I personally will finish the story line first, for those exact purposes.  While I'm doing that, multiplayer is not going anywhere, and there will be years of it to come anyhow.

I'm ok with a later release of RDR2:O as I usually prefer to play the campaign first.  ......but on the other hand, unlike past R* games, I'm coming into this one with good, co-op friends I didn't have with past titles.  Given that, I guess I also wouldn't mind a same day release.  ;)

I guess the main point here is that I won't be heartbroken if it is delayed a bit.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to dive into multiplayer with RDR2 more than I did GTAV.  I found it easier to find people to play with in RDR MP.  With GTAV I didn't have a whole lot of people to play with but never had a problem with that for RDR.  GTAV was fun but I constantly had situations where 3 or 4 guys would just stand across the street from my apt with bazookas waiting for me to come out.  You can't do that on RDR Hardcore.  RDR was a much more enjoyable multiplayer experience in my opinion.
